Do Ice Baths Really Fight Inflammation? Sports science, circa 2005, was pretty confident that ice baths accelerate recovery by fighting the inflammation in muscles after a hard workout. The actual evidence that ice baths really hastened recovery was admittedly ambiguous, but the idea that cold fights inflammation seemed self-evident. By 2015, the message was less certain. All the best to everyone running in the Melbourne Marathon Festival. Here’s some little reminders to help get you through.

1. If you feel good at the start then that’s a good thing.
2. If you can’t string a sentence together while running then that’s bad.
3. Continue asking yourself,”do I feel good”. Ask yourself this ten times during the race before you try and make a charge for home.
4. Don’t spend the day walking around the city today shopping, kick the feet up and take it easy.
5. The best pacing strategy is an even pace. So if you’re following a pace ballon and they take off faster in the hope to bank time, then hold back.
6. If it feels to fast, then it probably is.
7. Stay focused on yourself, it’s easy to get excited and take off to fast, but for every few seconds per km you run to fast, you’ll pay for it in the backend.
8. Smile, relax and know that the real work and concentration is for the last 12 km.
9. The halfway mark is 30km
10. If you are in front of the lead motorcycle you’re going to fast.
