Sometimes with disability access work, what may seem like the smallest change could actually mean a world of difference for someone. This is true for a lot of the work we do, but especially for the project we did at Currawong Beach Cottages.

Carfax Commercial Constructions completed a full restoration and refurbishment of three of the Heritage-listed Currawong Beach Cottages. Alongside this work – which included new kitchens, new concrete pathways and the demolition/rebuild of a heritage common area – RampAssist was able to provide the perfect solution for the Cottages’ disability upgrade.

This site is only accessible by barge or ferry from the Palm Beach Marina and the cottages themselves required a few strategic changes in order to accommodate the elderly and visitors with disabilities. Our portable easy ramps were the perfect solution for this project, as they have a modular sectional design that adapted to the cottages’ terrain, and were suitable for the variety of door step gradients and heights.

These are totally weatherproof aluminium ramps, making them durable for all sorts of conditions. Furthermore, their innovative, waterproof design, in conjunction with the added continuous handrail, minimise the risks of slipping while ascending or descending the ramp.

While this was not a complete disability overhaul for the Cottages, we were still able to implement some mobility-friendly solutions that allow for more seamless access to the cottages. For wheelchair users and other people with disabilities, this affords a level of convenience never seen before at this site.

School camp is an Aussie rite of passage, especially at The Great Aussie Bush Camp. However, a lot of campgrounds are not disability or wheelchair accessible, and this can create great barriers for any wheelchair user or person with a mobility disability. At best, this could put a damper on their camping trip and at worst, it could make access completely impossible.

Thankfully, at The Great Aussie Bush Camp, the fun doesn’t have to end here. They’ve recognised how much of a hindrance the lack of wheelchair and disability access was for wheelchair users and other campers alike. In an effort to create a more inclusive environment, The Camp reconsidered their Kincumber site design and made some necessary changes with the help of RampAssist.

Alongside a host of new additions to the site – including an updated kitchen and new games hall – The Camp installed a permanent concrete ramp. As per certification and council sign-off, disability handrails needed to be added and that’s when RampAssist was called on.

We fit the ramp with 70 lineal metres of compliant handrail, facilitating an extra level of safety, minimising the risks of falls and assisting those who need it with added balance. The continuous handrail allows users to get a secure hold, ensuring that there are no fixings to break their grip and that they can maintain a safe transition up the entire ramp.

In addition to the handrail, RampAssist also provided a portable ramp for The Camp’s new games hall. This ramp ensures that school children, teachers, and other campers are able to conveniently access the hall and its variety of fun activities.

This was an instance where we proudly assisted in the transformation of a location into a disability and wheelchair-friendly space. It was great to support such a popular camp destination in making the necessary changes to enhance their disability access!

With the help of RampAssist, Fringe World Festival was able to improve on some recurring wheelchair access problems and deliver on access-compliant promises.

Fringe is an open access festival, encouraging anyone to participate and ‘have a go.’ However, in 2019, Fringe World Festival was dubbed ‘inaccessible’ for wheelchair users, with a lack of proper disability access ramps and other wheelchair friendly factors.

Just last month, we were able to help Fringe rectify some of these issues. We delivered a customised and compliant modular ramp to their Perth venue. It was fit for ease-of-access and ensured that wheelchair users, as well as other people with disabilities – such as the vision-impaired – were afforded the level of access promised by the festival.

The ramp (pictured) was purpose-built, fit with modular handrails, kerb rails and stands. Decorated with foliage and bunting flags, the ramp led seamlessly up to the festival venue for safe and easier access.

While located primarily on the Central Coast NSW, RampAssist proudly services Australia-wide. For more information on our modular ramps or on-site installations, please visit our website: https://www.rampassist.com.au/ or contact us: ramps@rampassist.com.au

Eastern Riverina Arts, in collaboration with IDEAS Disability Information, brought accessibility to the forefront of arts and culture by delivering the first fully-accessible art space to West Wyalong with the help of RampAssist.

20 local artists with disabilities showcased a host of great works in the Riverina’s innovative, transportable and fully-accessible art space. One such work from the PLATFORM event was done by Bliss Cavanaugh, a sensory artist and room designer.

Alongside Cavanaugh’s captivating, multi-sensory shipping container was Ezy-Dun – a portable bathroom made fully-accessible with the help of our commercial ramp. This was just one element across many accessibility factors offered throughout the festival, including shuttle buses to and from multiple sites.

“The vivid realisation of an arts space accompanied by the much needed portable, accessible bathroom gives the opportunity for all people to get out amongst their own community festivals” said IDEAS Executive Officer, Diana Palmer.

Our commercial ramp was most suitable for the PLATFORM initiative, as it can be both easily disassembled and reassembled, facilitating multiple reuses. This means that wherever PLATFORM is taken across Australia, Eastern Riverina Arts and IDEAS can ensure accessibility and portability of such a necessary event feature.

With pandemic restrictions easing, we hope to support PLATFORM and other fully-accessible arts and culture initiatives across the nation.
