From Railways to Radio: Doug's Journey in Tune with Life

Meet Doug, one of our much-loved residents at Sunrise Supported Living, whose story was recently featured in The Great Lakes Advocate.

Doug’s life has been filled with music, memories, and meaningful moments, from his early days working on the railways to becoming a familiar voice on Great Lakes FM.

A natural storyteller with a love for classic tunes, Doug has spent years bringing joy to listeners across the Mid North Coast. His passion for music and community connection shines through everything he does.

Now enjoying life at Sunrise, Doug continues to inspire those around him with his warmth, wit and incredible life experience.

As he shared in the article:
"I never believed I could be as happy in a place like this as I am, and it’s all due to the residents and staff."

What a night to remember at our Village Spring Ball!
Thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a special evening. It was every bit as magical as Cindy had imagined, filled with music, yummy food, and heartfelt connection.

A special thank you to Laureen for being our courtesy walk home. Your thoughtful support helped ensure everyone returned safely, and we’re so grateful for your kindness.

Moments like these remind us just how special our Sunrise community truly is.

Bringing community and care together

This week, we welcomed senior management from BaptistCare to Sunrise Supported Living for a special morning tea with our residents.

It was a lovely opportunity for our leadership team to meet the people who call Sunrise home, sharing stories, listening to experiences, and enjoying time together in the heart of our community.

A warm thank you to the students from Chatham High School - Official for their respectful and thoughtful Welcome to Country. Your presence helped make the morning truly meaningful.

At Sunrise, we believe connection is at the heart of great care, and this morning was a beautiful reflection of that.

We’re so proud to see our wonderful Village Manager, Julie Blatch, featured in The Great Lakes Advocate recently.

Julie’s story is one of courage, curiosity, and care, from working behind the scenes at Alice Springs’ camel races to leading with heart here at Sunrise Village Tuncurry.

Her journey is filled with colourful chapters, but at the heart of it all is a passion for people. Whether it’s supporting our residents, mentoring staff, or bringing a warm smile to each day, Julie continues to shape Sunrise Village into the home it is today.

Our village remains the same warm and welcoming place it’s always been, offering independent retirement living with the support of a caring team who truly know our residents.

🌟 Exciting news for our Sunrise community! 🌟

We are excited to announce that Sunrise Supported Living Tuncurry and Sunrise Home Care will be joining the BaptistCare family in October 2025. This transition marks a new chapter for our community, and we are excited to continue providing exceptional care and support under BaptistCare.

BaptistCare is a not-for-profit, Christian-based organisation that has been providing care and services for older Australians since 1944. As part of a newly-merged national care organisation, its legacy of compassionate service now spans across NSW, ACT, WA, VIC, TAS and SA. BaptistCare supports over 38,000 people across Australia with the help of 12,000 employees and 1,500 volunteers, delivering aged care, home care, retirement living and community services.

Our retirement village in Forster-Tuncurry, home to 106 independent living units, and our home care services, which support 66 village residents and 190 clients across the Mid North Coast, will now benefit from BaptistCare's scale and stability, along with its demonstrated commitment to person-centred care.

All 90 of our dedicated Sunrise employees will be offered roles with BaptistCare, ensuring that the familiar faces you know and trust will continue to provide the care and support you rely on.

With aligned values and a shared dedication to compassionate, quality care, we are confident this transition will enhance the services we provide and ensure continuity of care for all our residents and clients.
