How do you look after yourself?

For me, professional development is one way I practice self-care. This week I’m in Melbourne attending the International Childhood Trauma Conference. Staying engaged in ongoing learning keeps me motivated and provides opportunities to connect with colleagues who share the same passion for this work.

I’ve found that when an act of self-care also benefits others, it can feel like a double win.

Yesterday I even had a fanboy moment, I met and rubbed shoulders with psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel, whose interpersonal neurobiology framework has shaped my thinking since my early career as a psychologist.

🖤💛❤️ Check out this great story about some of the consultancy work I’ve been doing with Ngak Min Health in North Queensland!

In the short time I’ve been involved, we’ve streamlined the assessment process, brought a paediatrician into the team, and drastically reduced wait times for specialist care.

By working onsite at Djarragun College, we’re providing trauma-informed, culturally appropriate care and improving the relationship and trust that First Nations families have with the healthcare system.

This is what meaningful, collaborative, and community-centred support looks like.

🌀 What’s a Repetition Compulsion?

Ever notice yourself stuck in the same painful patterns in relationships, at work, or within yourself....even when they cause distress?

This short video explores repetition compulsions: unconscious patterns where we recreate familiar emotional dynamics, often rooted in early attachment experiences.

Working with a psychologist trained in:

🧠 Psychodynamic Therapy: helps bring unconscious patterns into awareness

👁️ EMDR Therapy: uses bilateral stimulation to reprocess unresolved traumatic memories and experiences.

🧩 Schema Therapy: focuses on healing unmet emotional needs from childhood using imagery re-scripting and limited reparenting.

can support you to process and shift deeply ingrained patterns, especially those linked to attachment trauma.

I’m fortunate to be in a profession where I never stop learning!

This weekend, I’ve had the opportunity to attend the APS Festival of Psychology, where psychologists from all over the country gathered to share the latest research, insights, and therapeutic approaches.

As a psychologist, staying up to date with the most effective tools and knowledge means I can provide the best possible care to my clients.

From understanding how to better support men in therapy, to exploring the overlap between neurodivergence and trauma, to fine tuning existing therapeutic frameworks. Every takeaway helps me grow both professionally and personally.

Professional development isn’t just a box to tick, rather a promise to set a standard and show up better informed for my clients.

🌄 Did you know that I work remote one week out of every month and have been doing so for the last 3 years?

From outback NSW to Mt Isa.

This all started during my psychology internship years living in Broken Hill, where I experienced firsthand the health disparity and the real lack of psychologists in regional and remote areas.

I still remember in my first role at headspace, assessing many young people, who were then presenting at age 12 with depression, anxiety, feeling different and left out by their peers. And underneath it all? Undiagnosed neurodivergence.

A fire slowly grew inside me as I witnessed the penny drop over and over or these young people and their families after receiving an accurate diagnosis. That moment of “Oh… that makes sense now.”

That’s why I keep doing this work. That’s why I still go back to Broken Hill and other rural communities. Because early intervention can change the whole trajectory for a young person’s development, identity and mental health.

Or maybe it’s also that I miss the wide open beautiful sunrise on my early morning runs ☀️🏃‍♂️

🌿 Feeling overwhelmed by worry? 🌿

There are evidence-based strategies that can help you manage worry more effectively.

Here are two tools you can try:

🕒 Schedule Worry Time – Set aside 10–15 minutes each day just for worrying. When anxious thoughts arise outside this window, gently remind yourself you'll come back to them later. This helps reduce the frequency and intensity of intrusive thoughts.

🧩 Engage in a Mentally Demanding Task – Activities like sudoku, puzzles, categorising, or memory games can shift your attention and interrupt the worry cycle by engaging your brain in something focused and absorbing.

If worry is interfering with your daily life, speaking with a psychologist can help you develop tailored strategies and explore the underlying issues that may be maintaining it.
