Specialising in Manual Therapy, Joint Mobilisation, Dry Needling and Radial Shockwave, we deliver personalised treatments for pain relief and long-term well-being. Nate completed his Bachelor of Clinical Science and Masters of Osteopathic Medicine at SCU in northern NSW. Prior to, and while completing his studies, Nate worked as a fitness coach in his private studio on the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads border. Nate first became aware of the many benefits of osteopathy as a result of a chronic back injury that he sustained in 1999. After undergoing treatments of various modalities, Nate finally found reprieve from his pain after visiting an osteopath. It was through this positive and life changing osteopathic experience that Nate decided to study osteopathy and help others dealing with pain. Nate has a patient-centred approach to his osteopathic treatments that involve the use of a variety of hands on techniques such as soft-tissue massage, deep stretching, and joint mobilization. Furthermore, Nate also likes to focus on correcting the biomechanics of his patients through exercise. Outside of the clinic Nate enjoys spending time with his wife Anna, and their two boys Thomas and Edward.

💥 What’s really happening when you hear that “crack”?

At Cooly Osteo, all of our Osteopaths are highly trained in HVLA — that’s short for High Velocity Low Amplitude adjustments — the technical name for the gentle “cracking” technique you often see (and sometimes fear 😅).

You might have seen some cowboys on YouTube twisting necks or backs with little care or control — but true HVLA is precise, safe, and incredibly effective when done by a trained practitioner.
It’s something our team has refined and mastered over the past 10 years.

So, what’s actually going on? 👇

The “crack” isn’t bones moving — it’s gas releasing from the joint as pressure changes.

It helps restore motion in a stiff joint and reduce pain by calming the nervous system.

Many people feel lighter, freer, and more mobile immediately after.

Not every patient needs HVLA — it’s one of many tools we use — but when applied correctly, it can make a world of difference for restoring healthy movement.

If you’ve ever wondered what that sound is or if it’s safe — it is, and it’s one of the most finely tuned techniques in our toolkit.

🌟 Understanding Sciatica – Where It Comes From and Why

Sciatica isn’t a condition on its own – it’s a set of symptoms. If you’ve felt sharp, burning, or shooting pain that runs from your lower back or buttock down your leg – sometimes one, sometimes both – often with tingling or numbness, that’s sciatica at work.

🔎 Where it comes from
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower spine, travels through the pelvis and gluteal region, and runs all the way down the leg. Sciatica happens when this nerve is compressed or irritated anywhere along its path.

⚡ Why it happens
The most common causes include:

• Disc changes – a bulging or herniated disc pressing on a nerve root

• Degenerative changes – age-related narrowing of the spinal canal

• Muscle tension – tight glutes or piriformis muscle irritating or compressing the nerve

• Joint restriction – reduced mobility in the spine or pelvis altering mechanics

🔹 The osteopathic perspective
From an osteopathic view, sciatica usually develops when multiple stressors overlap – posture, load, repetitive strain, old injuries, and daily habits. On their own, these may not cause a problem, but together they can tip the body out of balance, leading to nerve irritation.

Osteopathic treatment aims to:
✔ Restore mobility in the spine, pelvis, and hips
✔ Ease muscle tension that may compress the nerve
✔ Improve circulation to support natural healing
✔ Provide education and strategies to reduce recurrence

Sciatica reflects an underlying problem or dysfunction. Osteopathy targets the root cause, supporting recovery and helping prevent it from returning.

🦷💥 Jaw Clenching and Headaches—More Connected Than You Think

Tension in your jaw (temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) can contribute to headaches, neck pain, and discomfort around the ears or temples.

Common causes include:
👉 Stress and anxiety
👉 Teeth grinding (especially at night)
👉 Poor posture
👉 Muscular overuse from clenching or chewing

You might experience:
🔸 Aching or pressure in the temples
🔸 Clicking or locking of the jaw
🔸 Pain that radiates behind the eyes or into the neck
🔸 Headaches that start at the base of the skull or jaw

Your jaw doesn’t work in isolation—it’s part of a dynamic system involving your head, neck, and upper spine. When it’s not functioning well, the ripple effects can be far-reaching.

👐 Osteopathic treatment can be highly effective for relieving jaw tension, improving TMJ function, and reducing headache frequency by addressing the muscular and joint imbalances contributing to your symptoms.

🔥 Dealing with lower back pain? The McGill Big 3 might be a good place to start.

These three exercises – curl-up, side plank, and bird dog – focus on building core stability without putting extra strain on the spine. They’re simple, controlled, and can help support how your body moves day to day.

That said, they’re not a quick fix. Back pain can come from all sorts of things, so while this is a solid starting point, it’s always worth getting checked out by a professional.
