Why Exercise is Medicine for Neglected Tropical Diseases 🌍🏃‍♂️

Today is . While these diseases affect over 1.6 billion people worldwide, the conversation usually stops at "medicine." At Keep It Moving Exercise Physiology, we want to highlight how movement is a vital part of the cure.

Many NTDs cause long-term physical disability, swelling, and nerve damage. Here is how an Exercise Physiologist helps:

🫀 Managing Lymphatic Filariasis: For those with "elephantiasis" or severe swelling, specific lymphatic drainage exercises use muscle contractions as a natural pump to move fluid, reduce limb size, and prevent painful infections.

🦶 Mobility for Leprosy: Nerve damage can lead to muscle weakness and loss of function. Tailored rehabilitation exercises help patients maintain their grip, balance, and the ability to walk independently.

🧠 Mental Health & Stigma: Chronic illness often leads to social isolation. Group exercise and physical wins help patients reclaim their confidence and re-engage with their communities.

We believe that ending NTDs isn't just about killing a parasite—it’s about restoring a person’s ability to move, work, and thrive.

Unite. Act. Eliminate.
