🐾 Bella’s Cancer Journey 🐾
Meet the adorable Miss Bella, a three-year-old Cavoodle, who recently completed a CHOP-based chemotherapy protocol with the VSS Oncology Service.
Earlier this year, Bella’s groomer noticed some enlarged lymph nodes around her neck. Just six weeks before, at her annual check-up and vaccination, Bella’s physical examination had been completely normal - showing just how quickly lymphoma can sometimes appear and progress.
After further diagnostic testing with Dr. Raelene Wouda and Dr. Sarah Sheppard, Bella was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma - one of the most common cancers diagnosed in dogs.
While there are lots of different forms of lymphoma, Bella had a higher-grade and generally more aggressive form of the disease. This specific type of lymphoma is most effectively treated with intensive chemotherapy.
Bella began a CHOP-based chemotherapy protocol in May, which combines four drugs that work together to destroy the cancer cells in different ways:
💊 C – Cyclophosphamide
💉 H – Doxorubicin (Hydroxydaunorubicin)
🌿 O – Vincristine (Oncovin)
🐶 P – Prednisolone.
A couple of weeks ago, marked Week 19 of Bella’s chemotherapy protocol. This was Bella’s FINAL treatment!
We’re so proud of Bella and her dedicated family for all their care and commitment throughout her treatment journey.

🎤 2026 VSS Conference: Speaker Spotlight - Dr Raelene Wouda
Dr Raelene Wouda brings unmatched expertise in veterinary oncology to the 2026 VSS Conference. From an Honours degree at The University of Queensland, to a Haematology and Transfusion Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania , to a second residency program in veterinary oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , Dr Wouda has developed a deep commitment to clinical excellence, professional development, teaching, communication, diversity, equity, inclusion and leadership.
🎤 Talk topic: Chemotherapy in Cancer Care
Chemotherapy plays a vital role in veterinary oncology, but it brings significant management responsibilities. This presentation will explore best-practice approaches to the handling, administering and disposing of cytotoxic drugs to protect veterinary staff, patients and their owners. It will also cover the recognition and management of common chemotherapy side effects. The objective of this presentation is to improve communication around chemotherapy, and instill clinical confidence when overseeing, or even just being peripherally involved in the management of, cancer cases.
Whether you’re directly involved in oncology, or simply want to strengthen your clinical communication, this talk (alongside almost 90 other clinical talks) is simply not to be missed!

VSS Underwood recently had a spooky visitor, when Miu Miu, a ten-year-old Maltese, stopped by the VSS Oncology Service and got into the spirit of Halloween! 🎃👻
Miu Miu has been visiting VSS Underwood for over a year now. She was initially referred by her family vet, , for multiple lumps along her inner thighs and tummy, and some concerning changes to her bloodwork.
After a thorough workup with Specialist Oncologist, Dr. Raelene Wouda, Miu Miu's diagnosis was a small cell, B-cell, lymphocytic leukaemia - although with more significant involvement of lymphoid tissues outside of the bone marrow, which is atypical for this disease in dogs.
Miu Miu was initially commenced on high-dose injectable chemotherapy. This treatment resulted in a rapid and excellent response, where her white cell count decreased from nearly 200,000 cells/mL to
