Veterinary specialist referral services in Brisbane and the Gold Coast: Medicine, Keyhole/Surgery, Emergency, Critical Care, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Oncology, Feline, Nursing, Advanced Diagnostic Imaging, Physiotherapy and Dentistry. Veterinary Specialist Services was established in 2000 as an extension of general veterinary practices all over Australia, particularly Queensland, and Northern New South Wales in providing the best possible care for your pets at a specialist level. When your pet requires our expert attention, your primary veterinarian can refer the pet to either our Brisbane, Jindalee or Gold Coast Services via a simple referral process. Veterinary Specialist Services is open for consultations across all three hospitals from Monday to Friday. Our wonderful reception team is here to assist from Monday to Friday and until 12:00pm on Saturday. Outside of these times, our phones will be answered by Animal Emergency Services (a separate company within the same premise). All hospitalised patients with Veterinary Specialist Services will be cared for by our veterinarians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure exceptional patient care for every pet. Veterinary Specialist Services has a wonderful team of dedicated internal medicine and surgery veterinarians in conjunction with Animal Eye Services (Ophthalmology), Animal Physiotherapy and several Veterinary Specialist Consultants in the fields of cardiology, dermatology, oncology and dentistry. Our comprehensive scope of specialist fields ensures the depth of knowledge, experience and skills required to provide your pet with the best possible care are always close at hand. With the speed of medical advances and depth of scientific understanding rapidly increasing in both human and animal fields, Veterinary Specialist Services appreciates the inherent importance of continual education for all our team members as well as maintaining close connections with international Specialist and cutting edge research. 🩺 Behind the scenes of a Specialist Scrub-In procedure 🩺
Our Head Surgeon at VSS Jindalee, Dr Abbie Tipler, recently performed a specialist scrub-in procedure at Greater Springfield Veterinary , Augustine Heights, assisting with an ovarian-sparing spey - a highly specialised desexing option for female dogs.
What is an ovarian-sparing spey?
This advanced sterilisation procedure involves removal of the uterus and cervix, while leaving one or both ovaries intact. The result?
✔️ Pregnancy is prevented
✔️ Natural hormone production is maintained
✔️ A tailored option for select patients where hormone preservation is desired.
Our VSS Specialist Scrub-in visits can support referring clinics with:
• Cryptorchid castration
• Vasectomy
• Gastropexy at the time of desexing
• Ovary-sparing hysterectomy
• Assistance with a first ovariohysterectomy in a large dog.

🎄✨ Keeping the Christmas Spirit Alive with Harry ✨🎄
Meet Harry, a Kelpie who has shown us that even after a big surgery, the Christmas spirit can still shine bright. ⭐
Harry recently underwent ESF (Linear External Skeletal Fixation) to repair a fracture - this is a complex orthopaedic procedure designed to stabilise broken bones and support proper healing.
Despite the intensity of his surgery, Harry has remained in high Christmas spirits, spreading cheer with his wagging tail, bright eyes and endless determination.
As we celebrate the festive season, it’s also the perfect time for a gentle reminder about keeping your pets safe and healthy during Christmas:
🥩 Keep the Christmas ham out of paw’s reach - ham is high in salt and fat and can be detrimental to your dog’s health; potentially leading to digestive upset or pancreatitis.
🎁 Watch the wrapping & decorations - tinsel, ribbons and ornaments can be tempting, but dangerous if swallowed.
🍫 Avoid festive treats - chocolate, grapes, raisins and alcohol are toxic to dogs.
🦴 Stick to pet-safe treats - save the celebrations for approved goodies made just for them.
🛏️ Maintain routine where possible - especially important for pets recovering from surgery, like Harry.

🎄Holiday Hours at Veterinary Specialist Services🎄
As we head into the festive season, we want to make sure you have our holiday operating hours handy for all emergencies and referrals.
🕗 Hospital Hours:
All VSS hospitals will remain open as usual - 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday - for emergencies and referrals throughout the holiday period.
📅 Public Holiday Closures:
Thursday 25 December | Friday 26 December | Thursday 1 January
🚑 Emergency Care:
During all closure periods, Animal Emergency Service will be onsite at each VSS hospital to manage emergency cases and support vet practices who are closed.
Our hospital patients will continue to receive 24/7 care, and our surgery team will remain on call around the clock.
Thank you to our referring vets, clients and community for your ongoing collaboration and trust throughout 2025.

As we celebrate 25 years of Veterinary Specialist Services, we’re proud to recognise another cornerstone of our hospitals - advanced diagnostic imaging, delivered every day by our highly skilled clinical teams.
For a quarter of a century, VSS has continually evolved its imaging capabilities to stay at the forefront of veterinary medicine. Across our Brisbane and Gold Coast hospitals, our clinicians and nurses perform diagnostic ultrasound, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI - supporting accurate diagnoses and better outcomes for thousands of patients.
Every study reflects the care, precision and teamwork of the staff involved - from careful patient preparation and anaesthetic monitoring to image acquisition and interpretation - all with patient safety and comfort at the centre.
We’d also like to give a special shout-out to Dianne Nguyen, our Radiographer and Radiation Safety Officer. Dianne has been part of the VSS family for many years. 🌡️ Celebrating Our Phenomenal Nursing Team 🩺

While this month marks 25 years of Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS), it also marks something equally as special – the extraordinary nurses who have poured their talent, energy and hearts into our hospitals over so many years.

Some of our nurses have been with us for decades. Others have left and then returned. Some have joined more recently and quickly became part of the VSS family. No matter their path, each one has helped shape who we are today.

These nurses have cared for thousands of patients, supported anxious families, uplifted their teammates and carried our mission forward with compassion, expertise and unwavering dedication.

Every year they have spent with us has strengthened the fabric of VSS. Every shift, every early morning, every late night, every temperature measured, every catheter placed, every anaesthetic monitored, every x-ray taken, every cat and dog cuddled and comforted, every steady voice in a stressful moment – it all matters tremendously, and it all makes an immeasurable difference.
