Mobility and Weight Training
There is a huge push in the fitness industry that everyone NEEDS to constantly work on their mobility. This may be to sell the latest rubber, foam or vibrating thing that you press into your body 😳 Honestly though, these things can be useful but not without movement.
Increasing the mobility of a joint should reduce risk of injury, but in reality, weak things still break. For some, increasing joint mobility may be necessary. Yet for others, doing tons of mobility work may be taking away from their fitness goals.

A "deadbug" exercise is a great way to work on abdominal bracing by pushing the lower back into the bench. Simply holding the starting position may be enough for beginners, before progressing to some variations. As we extend the arms and legs it becomes increasingly difficult for the abs to hold the lower back against the pad.
These are some deadbug variations that I like to incorporate. They can be done prior to squats/deadlifts to help prepare your bracing or on their own as an abs exercise. Again, the goal is to not let any space between the bench and lower back. Give some of these a try! πŸ’ͺ😁

πŸ’ͺ IT'S NEVER A BAD IDEA TO BE STRONGER πŸ’ͺ
Even if your goals are not purely strength focused, it may be beneficial to work towards a good base of strength to prevent and manage injuries.
Scott has built a great base of strength by practicing to use his hips and abdominal bracing to take some tension away from the lower back for romanian deadlifts.
We've slowly increased the range of motion to where the hips now go through their maximal amount of flexion, without noticeable spinal flexion. He now experiences less severe and less frequent back pain.
There may not be a way to alleviate all pain for everyone, however if you're experiencing pain or hoping to prevent further injuries, try working with Sanctum Strength to create a stronger, more resilient body. πŸ’ͺ😁

⏱ SLOW DOWN THAT TEMPO ⏱
If the goal is to train muscles, CONTROL the weight on the way down. Muscles won't be forced to resist lowering weight if the weight is free falling.
These 6 reps took me around 30 seconds, each with around 3 seconds to lower it without accelerating or bouncing. This should be more effective than adding reps or weight with less control for 30 seconds.
Instead of always adding reps or weight try slowing down your rep speed to 3, 4, 5+ seconds. This is much easier said than done, especially on those last couple of reps πŸ₯΅ so come down to Sanctum Strength to get more out of every rep! πŸ’ͺ

IS ROUNDING YOUR BACK DURING DEADLIFTS UNSAFE? πŸ€”
Some things to consider:
1. The spine is naturally curved.
2. The spine consists of joints that are designed to move.
3. The spine can sometimes be stronger in flexion.
So what does that look like in practice? The upper back naturally rounds forward and may curve slighlty more when lifting heavy weights, which can be safe πŸ’ͺ However, there definitely can be times when rounding a deadlift is risky πŸ€•

EveryBODY is different.
There are many variables other than diet and exercise that make our body's look the way that they do. Of course we can improve our diet and exercise regime to change how we look, however each of our results will vary greatly.
Seeing someone with a physique that we admire can be encouraging to make positive changes in our own lives. Some of us may even be able to achieve a similar body shape. But placing too much of our self worth on how 'healthy' we look (especially comparing ourselves to someone else) is not healthy at all.
For myself, setting realistic goals and celebrating little victories as I make progress has helped to set me up for long term success with wanting to change how I look, whilst still feeling happy with my body. Of course this is easier said than done, which is why my aim for Sanctum Strength is to create an enjoyable space of sustainable physical and mental self improvement.
