As we head into the Easter long weekend, it’s a chance to slow down, spend time with family and friends, and step away from the usual routine.

Across South Australia, our teams will be doing the same, but for many, the long weekend also means stepping into uniform.

While communities gather at events, travel across the state, and enjoy time away, St John SA volunteers and staff will be providing care and support where it’s needed.

On duty at events, responding when required, and helping ensure people can enjoy the weekend safely. It’s a balance that sits at the heart of what we do. Time with our own families, alongside a shared commitment to supporting others in theirs.

Thank you to everyone who will be on shift, on call, or giving their time over the coming days.

And for those taking a well earned break, enjoy the time to recharge.

St John Ambulance SA welcomes Abhra Bhattacharjee who has been appointed as Chief Marketing & Fundraising Officer.

This newly created executive role will guide our strategic marketing, ensuring integration across fundraising, lottery and communications functions across the organisation. Abhra comes to us with extensive experience leading marketing, communications, customer engagement and philanthropic activities across Australia, Singapore and India.

Commenting on his new appointment Abhra said "This role brings together two disciplines I care deeply about — building strong, trusted brands and mobilising communities to give, support and act.
At its core, St John is about service. Every day, volunteers and staff step forward to care for others — often in moments that matter most. It is a privilege to now be part of an organisation with such a clear and enduring mission.
I’m looking forward to listening, learning and contributing — and to working alongside a committed team to help St John reach even more people across South Australia."

First aid advice hasn’t always looked the way it does today.

Earlier St John guidance for snakebite included methods like cutting the wound or trying to draw out venom. As medical understanding progressed, these approaches were replaced.

Today, first aid focuses on immobilisation and slowing the spread of venom. This is a clear example of how practice improves and changes over time.

St John Ambulance SA celebrated Harmony Week by inviting staff to “bring a plate” of a dish that represented their culture, heritage, or a cuisine that is meaningful to them.

This was a great opportunity for staff to share something special and enjoy foods from around the world together.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY! ⏳

During the early 1900's, women played a key role in the growth of St John services across South Australia.

Women's divisions were established to teach first aid and home nursing and helping communities care for people who were sick or injured, at a time when access to formal medical services was limited.

These volunteers delivered training, supported community care, and helped expand the reach of St John programs across the state.

Their work laid important foundations for the many women who continue to lead and contribute to St John today.
