First aid advice hasn’t always looked the way it does today.

Earlier St John guidance for snakebite included methods like cutting the wound or trying to draw out venom. As medical understanding progressed, these approaches were replaced.

Today, first aid focuses on immobilisation and slowing the spread of venom. This is a clear example of how practice improves and changes over time.

St John Ambulance SA celebrated Harmony Week by inviting staff to “bring a plate” of a dish that represented their culture, heritage, or a cuisine that is meaningful to them.

This was a great opportunity for staff to share something special and enjoy foods from around the world together.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY! ⏳

During the early 1900's, women played a key role in the growth of St John services across South Australia.

Women's divisions were established to teach first aid and home nursing and helping communities care for people who were sick or injured, at a time when access to formal medical services was limited.

These volunteers delivered training, supported community care, and helped expand the reach of St John programs across the state.

Their work laid important foundations for the many women who continue to lead and contribute to St John today.

Some of our St John SA staff took time this morning to celebrate International Women’s Day and enjoy a breakfast ☕️together at HQ and watch the Adelaide International Women’s Day event.💜

The special online viewing of the event was a highlight of the day, which was hosted by Senator Penny Wong with guest speaker, SA's own, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, 2026 Australian of the Year.🎉

Adelaide, are you ready? Ed Sheeran is set to take over Adelaide Oval on Thursday! 🎶🔥

St John Ambulance SA will be onsite all afternoon and evening, providing Health and Medical Services to help everyone enjoy the concert safely.

Our teams of Medics, Registered Paramedics and Doctors will be positioned across the venue, including six Event Medical Centres, response teams throughout the arena and external locations. If you or someone near you needs assistance, please come and see us.

Before you head to Adelaide Oval, keep these key points in mind:

✅ Bring your regular medications, if you take prescribed medication, make sure you have it with you and take it as directed.
💧 Stay hydrated, concerts can get warm and crowded, so drink water consistently throughout the evening.
🍽️ Eat beforehand, a proper meal will help maintain energy and reduce the risk of feeling faint.
🤝 Look after your mates, arrive together, leave together, and check in if someone is not feeling right.
☀️ If you are arriving early, consider sun protection during afternoon entry.

If you need assistance at any time, speak with Adelaide Oval staff or the SRS Security team and they will point you in the right direction.

Heading along to A Day at the Gully today? 🎶🌿

We’ll be onsite from start to finish providing Health and Medical Services, with a full crew of Medics, Registered Paramedics and Doctors ready to support everyone enjoying the day.

So if Pete Murray promises you Better Days, we’ll make sure they stay that way. And if you get a little too enthusiastic and start belting out Opportunity like you’re headlining next year, we’ll still look after you.

The weather is looking mild, but festivals can still take it out of you. A few quick tips to keep things on track:

• Maintain regular hydration, aim for consistent water intake across the day
• Eat balanced meals to support energy levels and reduce the risk of fatigue
• Apply sunscreen and reapply every two hours, we've got plenty available!
• Pace yourself, take rest breaks in shaded areas as needed
• Keep your group together and actively check in on one another
• Seek assistance early if you feel unwell, dizzy, faint, or overheated

If you need us, we’re easy to find and always happy to help, just check out the map or have a chat to our teams. We're there if you need!
