🐍 SNAKE SEASON STORY: Gus & Pippa’s Close Call in Suburbia
💚 A gentle reminder for every Wagga pet parent

Gus lives in Wagga — right here in town. He wasn’t exploring the bush, he wasn’t on a rural property… he was simply enjoying his own backyard when everything changed.

His family noticed he suddenly became:
🌀 Wobbly
😕 Not himself
🚶‍♂️ Walking strangely

A quick look around the yard revealed a dead brown snake.
They didn’t wait.
They didn’t watch and see.
They raced him straight to Lake Road Vet. 🚗💨

That decision saved his life. 🩺💚

When Gus arrived, the venom was already affecting:
❤️ His heart rhythm
🌬️ His airway (and being brachycephalic made this even harder)

He needed antivenom, ICU care, and ventilator support while the venom worked through his system. Care never sleeps — and neither did our team that night. 🌙🐾

But then came the shock no one expected…
Gus’s sister Pippa, who looked completely normal when he arrived, began showing delayed symptoms hours later. Her family brought her straight in too — and thank goodness they did.

She also needed intensive care and ventilator support, plus treatment for a bleed in her lungs, which made her first couple of days very tough.

But with fast action, advanced treatment, and a family who refused to give up…
💞 They both made it through.

🐍 What their story reminds us:
• Snake bites happen in suburbia — even in quiet the streets of Wagga.
• Symptoms can be delayed. If one pet is bitten or suspected, bring ALL pets for assessment.
• 24-hour emergency care saves lives.
• Pet insurance can make emergencies less overwhelming. Gus and Pippa’s family are now looking into it for the future — a wonderful step.

If your pet is ever wobbly, weak, acting strangely, or you find a snake (alive or dead), please don’t wait.
Come straight in.
We’ll assess, treat, and guide you every step of the way. 💚

We’re here for you — always.
Care never sleeps at Lake Road Vet 🌙🐾

🌿 Introducing the Lake Road Veterinary Volunteer Program 💚🐾
Sometimes the busiest moments create the biggest opportunities to help.

There are days in our 24-hour ICU when Wagga’s fur families need us more than ever.
With Lake Road Vet now supporting a huge portion of southern NSW, the Murray region and the Victorian border, our caseload can fluctuate rapidly — quiet one moment, overflowing the next.

And while our team is dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled… even we reach full capacity sometimes.
That’s why we’re opening the door to something special:

💞 The Lake Road Veterinary Volunteer Program
A chance for compassionate locals to lend a hand right when it matters most.

🌟 Why We’re Creating This Program
Because care never sleeps — and when the unexpected happens, it truly takes a community to keep families (furred and human) safe.

We’re building a pool of wonderful humans who are willing to chip in during unusually busy periods or emergency surges in our ICU and hospital.

No regular commitment. No pressure.
Just people who raise their hand and say, “If things get tough, I’m here.”

🐾 Volunteer Roles Can Include:
(You choose what you're comfortable with!)
🧺 Light hands-on help
🫧 Popping on loads of washing
🧻 Folding laundry
🧼 Tidying treatment areas
🧽 Mopping during high-pressure moments

📦 Behind-the-scenes support
🔄 Restocking essential ICU supplies
📚 Helping organise storage areas
🐶 Assisting with rescue or welfare animals
🌿 Weeding or caring for outdoor spaces

💕 Patient & community care
🩺 Gentle assistance with stable ICU patients
🚗 Helping clients with mobility or transport challenges get their pets to and from the clinic
🩸 Supporting blood donation sessions
📞 Answering phones during overwhelming caseload spikes

Every role helps our team breathe.
Every moment donated helps a family get the care they need.

🌱 What Volunteers Gain
This isn’t just about lending your time — it’s about becoming part of something meaningful.

Volunteers have the opportunity to:
- Learn about emergency and critical care in a real ICU setting
- Build practical skills that translate beautifully into future employment
- Connect with an experienced team who genuinely love what they do
- Support the human–animal bond in moments of real need

Give back to a community that relies on accessible, advanced veterinary care

This is advanced care with a local heart — and volunteers play a part in that heartbeat. 💚

🙌 Want to Join the Volunteer Pool?

We’re currently collecting expressions of interest from caring community members who want to be called on occasionally — only when the caseload exceeds what our team can safely manage.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.
No experience required. Just kindness, reliability, and a love for helping others.

🔥 EXTREME FIRE DANGER TOMORROW – KEEP YOUR FUR FAMILY SAFE 🔥
The Riverina is heading into extreme fire risk conditions tomorrow, and we know many pet parents are already feeling that tightness in the chest — “What if something happens… and how do I keep my fur baby safe?”

You’re not alone. 💛
Here’s what we want every Wagga family to remember:

🐾 1. Have your evacuation plan ready

Pack a “go bag” for your pet today, including:
• Medications
• Lead, harness, carrier
• Food & water
• Comfort item (toy or blanket)
• ID tags & microchip details

If you need to leave, your pets leave with you. No exceptions.

🐾 2. Keep pets indoors during peak heat & smoke

Close windows, bring outdoor animals inside, and make sure anxious pets are in a safe, escape-proof area.

🐾 3. Know where you’ll go

If you live near grassland or bush, decide now which safe location you’ll head to and how you’ll transport your pets.

🐾 4. Stay informed

Monitor NSW RFS updates, local alerts, and weather warnings throughout the day.

🐾 5. If your pet has respiratory issues or anxiety

Reach out early — we can offer advice to help them cope with smoke, stress, and the heat. 💚

Tomorrow will be a challenging day for our region — but preparation is powerful, and keeping your fur family safe is what matters most.

We’re here for you 💕
If you’re worried about your pet’s health during fire conditions, please reach out. 💞

🔥 RIVERINA TO FACE MOST SIGNIFICANT FIRE WEATHER SINCE JAN 2020 – TOMORROW 🔥

Tomorrow, the Riverina will experience the most significant fire weather since January 2020.

An Extreme rating means:
⚠️ Fires will start quickly
⚠️ Spread rapidly
⚠️ Burn with great intensity
⚠️ Be incredibly dangerous and hard to control

Under these conditions, immediate action is needed to protect lives and property.
✔️ Review and enact your bush fire survival plan
✔️ Cancel all hot works in the open
✔️ Refer to the Harvest Safety Guide
✔️ Report all fires to 000 immediately, do not assume that somebody has or will

Stay informed, stay prepared, and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

🧡 A quick update from our Hospital Team

We’re currently caring for a large number of intensive care patients, and our call volume is much higher than usual. Our team is working carefully through every call, every diagnostic, and every patient to make sure their needs are fully met.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency, please call ahead before coming in so we can prepare for your arrival. This helps us make space, gather the right equipment, and be ready to support you the moment you walk through the door.

If you can’t get through straight away, please know we’re not ignoring your call—we’re simply assisting other fur parents and stabilising critical patients. We encourage you to try again, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding.

We’re continuing to triage and prioritise cases to ensure every patient receives safe, timely care. Thank you, for your patience as we work through this high caseload. We’re committed to providing safe, compassionate care to every patient who needs us. 🧡

📢🐾 Cleaver has now been found and returned home 🐾📢

🚨 Missing 🚨

One of our LRV Family is missing, Cleaver. Last seen around the Francis Ave/Stafford Street area in Gundagai.

If anyone sees him or know where he is, please let our team know. He is a much loved family member, and is usually only indoors so has very few street survival skills 💔

Lake Road Veterinary Clinic Christmas Party

At the end of each year Lake Rd Vet loves to share the Christmas spirit with the clients and community who make up the Lake Rd Vet Family. This has been a tradition for the last five years and is looked forward to by all our staff and junior family members.

Santa is a big focus for all our fur babies who can’t wait to whisper in his ear, give him a big slurpy kiss and have their photo taken with him.

There are lots of fur baby competitions like best dressed and most Christmassy pet. The younger pet owners enjoy the jumping castle and face painting.

The sausage sizzle is popular and you can still buy baubles for the giving tree. Profits from these activities benefit local rescue groups.
