Recently, clients at Calvary Drug and Alcohol were joined by a very special visitor — a lamb! 🐑

The visit included feeding and quality time, providing clients with a unique opportunity to experience calm, comfort, and connection.

We extend our thanks to Dr Virgona for facilitating this memorable experience.

Animal-assisted interactions like this highlight the positive impact that simple, nurturing experiences can have on recovery and overall wellbeing.

Our program incorporates breathing, meditation, yoga, and sound healing — all essential tools for managing stress and supporting recovery. These practices aren’t just for special occasions; they’re vital skills to carry into everyday life, especially on the journey to wellbeing.

🏠 Homelessness Awareness Week 🧠💊

This week, we shine a light on the deep and complex link between homelessness and alcohol and other drug (AOD) use.

Substance use is often not the cause of homelessness — it’s a response to trauma, poverty, mental health struggles, and system's.

Our clients were grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the Wagga Women’s Health Homelessness Expo, where they could connect with local services and learn what supports are available in the community. Events like these make a real difference.

In the AOD sector, we walk alongside people navigating these challenges with incredible strength. Recovery and stability are possible — but only when people have access to housing, support, and compassion.

🏠 Everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

🐱 National Cat Day in AOD 🐾

Today we celebrate National Cat Day, and give a special shoutout to one of our favourites — Mrs Jingles 🐾

In the AOD space, we see just how powerful the bond with a pet can be. For many of our clients, animals like Mrs Jingles provide:

🧠 Comfort during tough times
💛 Unconditional love
🏠 A sense of home, even when things feel unstable

Pets can be a huge part of someone’s recovery journey — offering companionship, routine, and a reason to keep going.

Here’s to Mrs Jingles and all the furry friends who walk alongside us through the highs and lows. You’re more than just pets — you’re healers, helpers, and family.

Q&A with Kristy, who graduated from our program here at Calvary Drug and Alcohol 2 years ago on the 31st of July.

🎤 2 Years in Recovery – Q&A with Kristy

1. What does 2 years of recovery mean to you?
Two years of living a life I only dreamed about during my addiction.

2. What’s something you’ve learned about yourself on this journey?
That I’m resilient — I can do hard things and come out stronger.

3. What’s been the biggest challenge – and how did you overcome it?
Staying abstinent has been my biggest challenge. I overcome it every day by using the skills I learned at CRDAC and leaning on my support network.

4. What do you do when cravings or tough moments hit?
My top 3 strategies:
📞 Calling a friend or family member
🌀 Using the 3 D’s, HALT, or urge surfing
🤝 Attending NA meetings

5. What would you tell someone in their first week of recovery?
This journey is hard — but it gets easier. And it’s worth every bit of the hard days.

6. What has surprised you most about being sober/in recovery?
That I can do all the things I thought I couldn’t — holding a job, being a mum and a Nan, and studying — all at once.

7. How do you celebrate your milestones?
With family, cake, and by giving back — I now support others at CRDAC in a peer support role.

8. Who or what has been your biggest support?
The CRDAC team and my family.

9. How has your life changed in the last 2 years?
I went from being homeless and disconnected to having a home, a job, reconnecting with my family, and studying for a better future.

We’re so proud to share her reflections on two years in recovery. 💛

💚 Self-Care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Essential 💚

In the AOD recovery journey, self-care plays a powerful role. It’s not just about bubble baths and candles (though those are great too!) — it’s about listening to your body, honouring your needs, and taking steps to protect your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

Self-care can look like:
✔️ Saying no when you need rest
✔️ Reaching out to your support network
✔️ Eating regularly and staying hydrated
✔️ Going for a walk in fresh air
✔️ Taking a few moments to breathe and ground yourself

Whether you're just starting your journey or supporting someone else on theirs, remember: you can't pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself is not a luxury — it's part of the healing.

Today is National Self-Care Day — a great reminder to slow down, check in with yourself, and do something that nourishes you.
