Melatonin.

Let’s chat melatonin. I often get asked by parents if melatonin is a good option to help with their child who is struggling with sleep.

Although Melatonin is a hormone which helps to regulate sleep, the first step recommended to try is behavioural strategies to help with achieving better sleep.

Melatonin is however is often used in children with sleep disorders related to ADHD, Autism, visual impairment & developmental disabilities.

I recommend talking to your child’s Paediatrician or GP for further information. And of course if you are looking for holistic sleep strategies for your little one please get in contact.

Short Naps
Is you little one taking short naps during the day? Short naps have been given a bad rap but really if it’s working and your little one is waking happy and content there is not need to change things up.

However if your little one is waking upset I suggest to try the following:
- Try to resettle them in their sleep space
- Play around with their wake windows perhaps they are going down for their naps overtired or not tired enough.
- Try and extend the nap on the go, think pram, car, front pack.
- Breastfeed back to sleep

Sleep Red Flags

- Mouth breathing. Snoring or pauses in breathing. These can be caused by large adenoids or tonsils. I recommend investigating further.

- Night sweats. If this is something new it’s important to get this checked out as their sleep maybe disturbed at night.

- Your little one is sleepier during the day. This can be an indication of restless night sleep and an underlying sleep pathology maybe at play here.

Please see your GP if you notice any of these symptoms in your little one.
