Screening tests can help identify whether a patient may fall on the hypermobility spectrum.
Hypermobility Disorder and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are genetic conditions that can cause hyper-extensible joints and increased skin laxity. These features can sometimes present with TMJ (jaw joint) instability, leading to dislocation, pain, and dysfunction.
In some cases, treatment can be performed arthroscopically. This involves a targeted scarification technique to tighten the joint by encouraging controlled fibrosis of the supporting ligaments.
In one of our cases, the patient experienced recurrent TMJ dislocations and had multiple Emergency Department visits for jaw relocation. Seeking a long-term solution, she underwent TMJ arthroscopy, where the posterior ligaments of the joint were scarred to improve stability.
The outcome was excellent — the patient recovered well and her recurrent dislocations resolved.
