Did you move house a lot as a kid? Or even one big move, perhaps to a different country?

Moving schools, losing friends, having to make new friends, wanting to fit in at the new school but being the ‘new kid’ can be tricky for kids. If you are an adult now, it is likely no one considered the emotional impact for you at the time.

Moving house frequently during childhood is linked to long-term mental health challenges in adulthood. It’s another form of trauma.

Your parents may have had to move a lot as part of their employment and did it with the best of intentions, however, moving is considered a high stress event for adults, imaging how it impacts children who have no choice and are less able to make sense of it.

Moving schools, losing friends, having to make new friends, wanting to fit in at the new school but being the ‘new kid’ can be tricky for kids. If you are an adult now, it is likely no one considered the emotional impact for you at the time.

Research shows that children who move often, especially two or more times, are at significantly higher risk of developing depression later in life. A large 2024 study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that moving during childhood increased adult depression risk by 61%.

Other long-term effects that I see in my clients include:
• Lower life satisfaction
• Fewer quality relationships
• Feelings of finding it hard to settle down anywhere or not belonging
• Increased anxiety and difficulty forming attachments

These effects are especially pronounced for introverted or sensitive children.
So, if you moved a lot as a kid, it was likely traumatic and could be a cause of emotional health problems today.

Living in a family where money was scarce and your parents were in survival mode, or they were struggling with money and making ends meet, is another form of childhood trauma.

You may have had very loving parents who worked hard to put food on the table, and a roof over your head but you were made to feel guilty for wanting something special for your birthday or Christmas.

Or the other kids at school always had new bikes, clothes and toys and yours were hand me downs, second hand or home made, so you felt unworthy.

Or maybe you felt abandoned because your parents worked long hours to give you the best life they could but weren't available for you as much as other parents.

Often these feelings are held at an unconscious level and impact how you feel today; worried about money, won’t spend on yourself, or simply believe that there is never enough.

This can also go back generations. My Dad lived on a farm in a house with no electricity when he was younger, and during the war they shot rabbits for food when rations were not enough or simply didn’t show up on the train. Mum also lived a life where there often wasn’t enough money and used to tell us how she and her brother got sick of having pancakes for tea because that’s all there was, eggs, milk from their cows and flour.

Constant criticism as a child is a form of trauma.

That ongoing narrative of always being told what you had done wasn’t good enough or that you needed to do better.

Sometimes there was ridicule of your best efforts, of something you were really proud of, that meant you stopped trying.

This can happen when parents or care givers:
Don’t know any different because that’s how they were raised.
Have their own mental health or addiction issues.
Believe that being tough on kids helps them develop character.
Are abusive or narcissistic.
And the list goes on.

So you now live with low self-worth, fear of rejection and not trying anything new for fear of failure.

This is not about blaming anyone. You may have had loving parents who were simply doing the best they could in a sh*tty situation.

Here's the thing - You are often not responsible for what happened to you but, you are responsible for how you respond to it.

You have a choice.

You can choose to continue carrying this, or not.

What do you think of when I say the word “Trauma”?

Most people think of major events; death of a loved one, car accident, physical or emotional abuse, earthquake or being caught in a war zone.

The truth is it doesn’t always need to be one huge event or a chain of events over time that are recognised as traumatic.

Trauma in childhood can be a series of incidents or a way of life that on an unconscious, childhood level, felt unsafe in some way.

These things can happen even in families where the parents are loving and want the best for their kids. Even when parents were doing the best they could, sometimes it wasn’t enough and sometimes we misinterpreted the situation.

Sometimes we simply needed and deserved more.

This can lead to limiting beliefs such as “I am not enough”, I am not loveable” or “It’s not safe for me to speak up and use my voice”.

These then show up in adult life as triggers, low self-worth, stress, anxiety and PTSD.

When we gently explore these, in hindsight, and recognise that they are no longer serving who we are today, it is a simple process to release them and become who we truly are meant to be.

6 Human Needs Summary - Integration: Living in Balance

This week I’ve been talking about the 6 Human Needs as promoted by Tony Robbins.

What if happiness came from addressing these needs instead of struggling.
What if Certainty, Variety, Significance, Growth and Contribution were easy to attain and came with balance and flow? Life would feel complete, wouldn’t it?

6 Human Needs part 6 - Contribution: Giving from a Full Cup

“I feel so empowered like I finally have something beautiful to offer the world again.”

All of us have the need to contribute in some way, whether it’s in our community, job or family. We have an innate need to contribute to the world in some way. It’s the desire to make a difference, to find meaning and value through how we give back.

It might be taking care of someone, volunteering, doing a good job at work or simply doing your bit at home to keep things on track.

I assess all my clients for Love Languages, it helps me understand what makes them tick. Recently one client, whose highest Love Language is Acts of Service, a form of contribution, renamed it to Acts of Kindness. They said it sounded better and more like something they wanted to do rather than a chore.

So, when you think about Contribution it can help to think about it as an act of kindness, or the good feeling you will have afterwards.

When we give from exhaustion or obligation, contribution loses its joy. When you give from a full cup, your energy uplifts others effortlessly. whether it’s your family, community, or the work you love.

Our Story

My dream is to empower and enable others to be the best they can be, physically, emotionally, spiritually and professionally so they can live a productive, healthy life. I’m a Mum of 3 adult children and Jojo to 2 beautiful granddaughters. Like most people out there I’ve lived a life of ups and downs. A couple of times my life has turned on a 10 cent coin and gone in a direction I could not have imagined. It was as if someone took the movie script I had written of how my life was meant to unfold and rewrote the ending without asking me if it was OK. Studying Reiki and counselling, then Social Work and NLP, Time Line Therapy® and Hypnotherapy was my saviour. During the training much of my healing took place when we practiced the modalities on each other and this healing continues today. I am so inspired by what I have learned and the changes it has made to my life. I would love to talk to you about anything you would like to change in your life and how together we can make it happen. Releasing and clearing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, grief and loss and restoring physical and emotional well-being is something I achieve with all of my clients. I also love running workshops to pass on my knowledge so people like you have the tools to deal with life as it happens. I am a Master Practitioner of NLP, Time Line Therapy™, NLP Coaching and Hypnotherapy, Reiki Master and therapist and a member of the International Institute for Complimentary Therapists. Supporting clients to release negative emotions and limiting beliefs and create their future. NLP has many ways for you to create or change behaviour. It eliminates obstacles, restores and builds energy, and it brings your motivations into alignment, burning through life's obstacles. When Dragonfly enters your life you begin releasing yourself from unproductive illusions that hold your soul’s progression back. The Dragonfly spirit challenges old habits and concepts that box you in. Because Dragonflies gravitate to ponds and puddles, they are creatures of both air and water. This means that Dragonfly symbolism and meaning is deeply tied to our emotions and our mind.
