How did McQuoin Park get its name?

In 1865, the North Sydney Mercy Sisters arrived in Sydney under Elizabeth McQuoin’s leadership, with a focus on furthering the education, healthcare, and social welfare of women and children.

A milestone emerged in 1897 when Mother Aloysius Casey founded an orphanage in Waitara. This institution evolved into a training school for Mothercraft Nurses, and later, in the 1970s, became the Mercy Family Life Centre, providing aged care, children’s services, counselling, and welfare support.

This site at Waitara is now home to McQuoin Park named in honour of Sister McQuoin. You’ll also notice one of the buildings bears the name ‘Casey’ as a tribute to Mother Aloysius Casey (pictured). McQuoin Park is more than just a place; it is a living chapter in the story of mercy, faith, and community care.

Let’s take a moment this Mental Health Month, to check in with ourselves and others around us. At McQuoin Park, showing up in meaningful ways goes beyond just October. McQuoin Park proudly takes part in the Mood Mentors program, which upskills volunteers to identify low mood in themselves and others and encourages value-based activities as an antidote.

The Mood Mentors program is helping to address the challenges of loneliness in older people by fostering connections, and creating opportunities for support and companionship from within.
