Very insightful post from Jessica Turton - Dietitian & Nutritionist. Learning what satiety on a real food diet looks like for you is important.
Eating “to satiety” isn’t about eating until your stomach feels full.
It’s about eating enough of the right balance of real, nutrient-dense foods to satisfy physical, physiological, emotional and mental drives to eat.
Two people of the same size, age and activity level can need very different amounts of food to reach true satiety.
For example, someone with a history of binge eating may reach physical fullness quickly - but still feel unsatisfied. That doesn’t mean they lack willpower. It often means their body and brain need more calories, nutrients, or consistency to feel safe, nourished and settled.
This is also where food quality matters. 👇
Ultra-processed foods are designed to override satiety signals. They often drive rapid spikes in blood glucose and insulin, which can reduce the amount of usable energy available to the body. When energy availability drops, hunger signals stay switched on - making it extremely challenging to tune into satiety.
So when I talk about eating to satiety, I’m talking about real food - meals with adequate calories and nutrients that help to support stable blood glucose levels and increase energy availability.
Satiety isn’t a volume game.
It’s a nourishment game.
And for many people, learning what true satiety feels like is essential for supporting healthy weight management and healing their relationship with food. 🤍
