MD Strength Slam Down Recap » Taylor Tha, Nelson Dawber & Gabriel Koh

I had the pleasure of coaching 3 of my athletes on the weekend at . It was one of the most organised meet, and definitely a great first sanctioned competition for 2 of my athletes to be apart of. Thank you to all the refs & volunteers who made this possible đŸ™đŸŒâ€šâ€šTaylor Tha .thaa . đŸ„‡ 9/9, 340kg
Squat: 115kg
Bench: 62.5kg
Deadlift: 162.5kg

This marks Taylor’s first sanctioned competition. Immediately as we started prep, she strained her left adductor. This inhibited Taylor’s ability to squat to depth. In order to still get some stimulus, we had to switch her secondary day to pin squats (just above where she gets pain), while pulling back on volume and intensity on her primary day in order to avoid aggravating her starting. Ironically, she doesn’t get any pain in her adductor during sumo deadlifts at all. With the help of , we formed a plan to keep her adductor under control, and made sure she’s warming up well prior to her squat sessions. This worked out really well on the day as she had ZERO pain in her adductor, and still had a bit more room to push her third attempt for squat. Taylor also managed an all time PB for bench and deadlift on the day - with plenty of room to push her top end strength. Really exciting and impressive first meet for Taylor, and I’m keen to see how far we can progress from here!

Nelson Dawber . 9/9, 465kg
Squat: 172.5kg
Bench: 112.5kg
Deadlift: 180kg

This was also Nelson’s first sanctioned comp, so our priority was to get 9/9 on the day. Before starting our comp prep, Nelson wanted to experiment with sumo as conventional is usually quite taxing for him, leaving him sore and fatigue for days. This did take away from his squat numbers, so we spent a lot of time trying to nail down his technique for sumo. As sumo is quite technical, Nelson was able to be quite efficient in his ex*****on in a short amount of time. Really keen to see how far we can take his deadlift with more time to practice.

Comp Recap » Zachary Frisch

Huge shoutout to my athlete for his debut in the u93kg class at over the weekend. Massive shoutout to TSF for another beautifully run comp.

Since Nationals last September, the goal was simple: build a big base. We pushed up bodyweight, continually worked on his technical skill and ex*****on. More importantly, we focused on ✹delayed gratification✹. His work showed on the platform with a massive +55kg added to his total.

* Squat: 220kg (+25kg)
* Bench: 145kg (+20kg)
* Deadlift: 245kg (+10kg) with more in the tank

Our strategy on the day was to stack as much as possible on squat and bench without leaving him too fatigued for deadlifts — especially after finding out just one week from comp that he couldn’t have caffeine (doctor’s orders). Still, we went 9/9 and executed perfectly.

Now the focus shifts towards refining the deadlift macro in a way that allows for consistent progress without detracting from squat performance.
In the past, we’ve observed that as deadlift numbers climbed, squat strength sometimes declined — so the aim moving forward is to strike the balance where both can rise together.

A strong debut in this new weight class, and an exciting performance to build from đŸ˜€

As much as it breaks my heart to write this, I need to share an official update.

Over the past few weeks I’ve received countless messages asking about the powerlifting equipment in the gym and the future of our sanctioned competitions.

Sadly, the reality is that we aren’t able to keep all of our powerlifting equipment for the foreseeable future. Because of this, MVMT competitions will also be put on hold.

To everyone who has been part of the powerlifting community here - whether you’ve been with us from day one, or simply stopped by for a casual session - I cannot thank you enough. These last three years have meant everything to me. The energy, the support, the friendships, the community, and of course, those unforgettable MVMT competitions. With the huge warm-up area, the electric crowd, and the atmosphere it brought - that was truly one of a kind
 none of that would have been possible without you.

I’m devastated that things have come to this point, but I genuinely believe this isn’t the end. It gives me hope hearing that MVMT competitions set a standard, and while I don’t know exactly what the future holds, I do know there will be another chapter for MVMT in the powerlifting space.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this community what it is đŸ«¶đŸ»
