Over the last few weeks, 84 staff have taken part in tours and training at the new Wantirna Residential Aged Care Facility.

These staff will be moving from three aged care facilities in the area, Edward St Nursing Home, Northside Residential Aged Care Service and Mooroolbark Residential Aged Care Facility to the new purpose-built state-of-the-art facility.

“Aged care workers are really needed right now because it’s not the usual choice when studying nursing. I tell everyone, it’s an honour to work in aged care, it’s a privilege to care for the elderly."

Today is Aged Care Employee Day, an opportunity to share the work of our staff like Simone, who will be moving the new purpose built aged care facility at Wantirna Health in just a few short weeks.

“I’ve been at Edward St Nursing Home for 11 years so moving to Wantirna Health is an exciting new start. The biggest benefit will certainly be the digitisation of a lot of our admin and paper work because it’ll allow us more time to focus on our residents.“

Due to the continuing increase in COVID-19 cases and recent outbreaks. We have made the difficult and considered decision to re-introduce visitor restrictions.

We are aware of the challenges patients and their loved ones may have as a result of these restrictions. However, we are still making every effort to protect our patients, carers, visitors and our staff.

You can help reduce the spread and thus, allow visitor restrictions to be reduced again by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask (even when you don't have to) and practising physical distancing where you can.

Thank you Eastland for the donation of socks, ongoing support and helping to generate awareness for our incredible people.

The 120-bed, $81.58 million Wantirna residential aged care redevelopment is coming along well.

Eastern Health staff recently had the opportunity to have their first on-site tour and sample some meals that will be available to residents once the new facility opens.

The facility is designed to optimise the physical and mental wellbeing of our residents and will support a range of care needs in a dementia-friendly environment.

“I’ve always had a passion for looking after people. When I was young I had a couple of sports injuries that led me to Physiotherapy. Once I started working in a hospital setting I realised how big an impact we could make on people’s lives. That's what I find most rewarding.”

Andy is a Grade 2 Physiotherapist at Eastern Health and believes that some patients need a group effort from all aspects of the Allied Health Team.

“For some patients, it can be really challenging to get them back to what they were doing before. And sometimes it is not possible. Helping them get to a new normal and having an opportunity to have them accept that and find some meaning from then on is really significant to me”

“It's been a collaborative project, we've listened very carefully to what our consumers have to say, and we've listened to our staff.

What we will build is a state of the art brand new purpose built facility here in Wantirna.”

- Tass Mousaferiadis, Eastern Health Board Chair

“Because if the flood of patients coming out of Residential Aged Care, the GEM ward became a COVID Ward virtually overnight. We’ve had 53 COVID positive patients through the ward and discharged the last patient last week.”

Jimmy is one of the dedicated Occupational Therapists we’re celebrating this week for Occupational Therapy Week.

“Most of the patients weren’t acutely unwell from COVID-19 so within a few days, we could start working on underlying issues while they recovered. This was really a great opportunity to improve the quality of life for the patients who otherwise may never have had this kind of care in an aged care facility.”
