Hi folks,

I have had a few people contact me recently looking to book a session.

Unfortunately and very much to my regret I have not been able to get back to teaching due to personal circumstances.

If you are local to Newcastle and the Hunter I can happily direct you to First Years First Aid.

I hope to get back to teaching very soon.

In the meantime thanks for your support.

Love Sharyn

Hi folks. I’m still getting people keen on classes contacting me. I’d love to be able to say yes I’m back. Unfortunately during covid my husband was quite unwell so I had to take up more nursing work. For now that is what I have to continue doing. I miss teaching immensely. I’ll try to get back to it as soon as I can. Love Sharyn

*TRIGGER WARNING* Car accident resulting in serious injury

We have been sharing content focusing on car seat safety this week and wanted to share this heartbreaking story from August last year, because it really shows the importance of proper car seat use.

"Please keep reading, this post could save your baby’s life.
Did you know that if your child’s car seat was forward-facing and you were to get in an accident their neck would get hit with the force of 180kg 220kg? Where as if they were to be rearward facing that force would be 40kg-60kg?

I’m so thankful to have known that information before the absolute worst happened to us. And I’m hoping that by sharing our story it may convince some people to rearward face for as long as possible.

A month ago I put Jax in his seat, did a pinch test on his straps, and then started to make my way to my parent's house just like I have done so many times in the past. Though this time we never made it there.

Instead, the next thing I remember was men putting me in an ambulance and telling me that I had been in an accident. Jax was no where to be seen, and all they told me was that he was airlifted to the Royal children’s hospital in Melbourne. After having spent the night in the hospital myself, I finally got to go see him. Nothing could have prepared me for seeing my little man in that massive bed with so many tubes and wires everywhere. He had a fractured skull, a brain bleed, high pressures in the brain, and a torn ligament in his neck. It was an awful lot to process, I had no memory of what happened and suddenly I could lose my precious boy. It was touch and go for a while, but four surgeries, four weeks in hospital, and many tears later I was thankfully lucky enough to be able to take my boy home without any permanent issues.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about what life would be like if we weren’t so lucky. If I hadn’t known to keep him rearward facing, he definitely wouldn’t be here the doctors have told me.

So if you have already started forward facing your young child please reconsider. It is safest to keep your child rearward facing until they reach the forward-facing markers on your car seat (this could mean that you can keep your child rearward facing for up to 4 years in Victoria)."

This is perfect. I say this almost every day in clinic with all the babies and their parents. Don’t compare.

This is perfect. I say this almost every day in clinic with all the babies and their parents. Don’t compare.

They are two healthy babies, three months old, both exclusively breastfeeding and, believe me, neither the one on the left is obese, nor the one on the right is undernourished. They are variations of normality! Most likely, when they start crawling, the one on the left will slim down a little and the one on the right will gain muscle mass.
Do not compare your child to other children.
Each of us is different.

After a happy Easter Sunday, Brendan Pratt, his wife Amanda Bews and their three teenage sons were all asleep in bed at their home in Wandin North, Victoria. In the early hours, Pratt was startled awake by a shrill beeping.

・・・
Meningococcal disease is a serious illness that often causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and/or blood poisoning (septicaemia). Meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) is the most common cause
of invasive meningococcal disease in children, adolescents and young adults in Australia.

Since the introduction of vaccination against meningococcal C, the strain B has become the most common circulating strain in Australia.

The meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero) is only funded in some groups in Australia on the national immunisation program.
This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children under the age of 2, or people with
🔹inherited defects or deficiency of properdin or complement components, including factor H and factor D
🔹current or future treatment with the medication eculizumab
🔹people without a spleen
🔹HIV infection
🔹haematopoetic stem cell transplant.

The South Australian government also funds the vaccination in South Australian children.

The vaccine can be given from 6 weeks. If your child doesn’t fall into an eligible group, you can obtain a script from your GP to purchase the vaccine privately and receive it at your regular immunisation clinic or general practice. Babies under 12 months need two doses two months apart and a booster after 12 months of age.

There is an increased risk of fever following immunisation with Bexsero, because of this it is recommended babies under the age of 2 receiving the vaccine should have a dose of paracetamol 30 mins before the vaccination. A further two doses of paracetamol should be given 6 hours apart, regardless of if the child has a fever.

Other common reactions include:
🔸Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
🔸Irritability
🔸Sleepiness
🔸Crying and unsettled
🔸Change in appetite

These reactions usually don’t last more than 2-3 days following vaccination.

With the COVID-19 vaccine roll out starting, I thought I would share this.

I will be having a vaccine as soon as I am able and I would encourage you all to do the same.

The idea that a drowning person splashes and calls for help is mostly a myth. How do you spot someone in trouble? What are their chances of surviving once you do? And how well should a child be able to swim?
