This week marks the start of something exciting for Everyday Eating as we welcomed a new APD!

Welcome, Felicity 🎉

It’s the night before my littlest boy’s second birthday and a week since he asked for ‘gilk’ at bedtime. I have a huge lump in my throat thinking about our breastfeeding journey being over. At the same time, I know it was the right time for both of us. I’m grateful (and amazed) that he self-weaned when he was ready 🙏🥹

Sweet, sweet peas ☀️

It is such a beautiful time to be in the garden. I recommend planting something, anything really! It’s good for the soul and a great experience for children.

Feeding Therapy today, with a little buddy of mine, included a fun lesson about The Five Food Groups.

A sorting game that allowed for a wonderful conversation about how food fuels our super powers 💪🏼

Sometimes making a dinner the whole family will eat can feel near impossible.

Remember though, everyone in the family doesn’t have to enjoy every part of the meal..

Start by thinking about what YOU (and your partner) feel like eating! Then think about how can that meal can work for your children.

It may mean leaving a certain ingredient out and serving it on the side. Like this quiche, for example. I like to put vegetables in, but have a little one who doesn’t enjoy cooked vegetables and I know she would be instantly turned off if she saw vegetables in the quiche.

Instead, we served a mix of raw and roasted vege on the table with the quiche, along with a few chips.

Everyone saw things on the table that they enjoy eating and it meant for a calm and happy meal 👌

Also, remember to trust your little ones to eat as much as their bodies need. Instead of pressuring them to eat more, remind them that after we have finished dinner the kitchen is closed until our next meal (or snack). Parents decide when food is offered and what is offered, children decide if they eat and how much.

The winner is!!

Fresh whole fruit 🍊

✔️maximum fibre

✔️minimum sugar

✔️doesn’t displace water

Do keep blended juice on the menu though! They can be a great way to get more vegetables in to children’s diets. Add a couple of different vegetables and 1/2 a serve of fruit to sweeten.

Always encourage little ones to get involved in preparing their juices 👌

My boy was super proud to show me his platter. The first one he has made all on his own.

He thought about the food he wanted on there, rummaged in the kitchen, prepped and chopped (using our knife).. and voila!

Such a lovely thing to see their independence grow. 🙌🏻

I find it so helpful for children to know what to expect in our feeding therapy sessions.

We start with some fun breath work to help us feel calm and ready to engage.

We wash hands in lovely warm soapy water.

Our Food Play (with a purpose) is planned around the cognitive age of the child. We provide children with opportunities to interact with a diverse range of foods in a relaxed and fun way. We tailor foods towards the nutrient and sensory needs of the child.

Clean up is important to give our children another pressure-free opportunity to interact with food and it signals the end of our sessions.
