Possum House

Possum House At Possum House we offer counselling, play therapy, and parenting support to children, adolescents, and their families.

Nicky Trussler and Paulaida Fitzsimmons are both Accredited Mental Health Social Workers with significant experience in supporting children, young people and their families. We aim to provide a therapy environment that is safe, understanding, and age appropriate. At Possum House we have two play therapy rooms and two general counselling rooms. We provide Synergetic Play Therapy, AutPlay, Trauma Fo

cused Cognitive Therapy, and draw from a large range of other therapeutic interventions. We believe that one size DOES NOT fit all and provides interventions tailored to each child and their family's needs.

This might sound harsh, but here’s the reality: many behavior plans are built on surface-level observations. They aim to fix what’s visible—without ever asking deeply enough why the behavior is happening, or what the body is experiencing underneath.

When plans prioritize compliance over inner validation…
When they reward masking and suppressing real needs…
When they push through distress with tokens and timers…

They’re laying the foundation for Autistic Burnout.

We can do better. With curiosity. With interoception. With care that seeks to understand the whole autistic person.

Today we celebrate the unique contributions autistic people make to our community, and recognise the struggles many autistic people still face, living in a world not designed to help them thrive. We are proud to have autistic people working within our organisation, supporting their neurokin with a depth of understanding that comes from lived experience alongside professional training. This is a collection of some of the things our autistic community at Possum House love!

We love being part of the community of health and community support practitioners in the Maryknoll Centre so are so excited to be able to stay in the same building. Our new rooms are much more spacious than before and gives us the opportunity to create a space for older clients. Our signs are yet to arrive but come in through the entrance by the pharmacy and turn right, we are the first door on the left.
