Today is the perfect time for a reminder about where optometry fits when it comes to looking after your eyes. 👀

Optometrists are your primary eye care providers – think of us as “the GPs of the eyes”. 🤩

An eye examination with an optometrist isn’t just about glasses or contact lenses (although that’s still an extremely important part); it should also include a thorough assessment of your eye health. We help detect conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease early. 👁️

We’re also your first point of contact for any eye or vision concerns – from blurry vision to red eyes and even foreign body removal. 😎👌

Where appropriate, we can manage these conditions ourselves. If we believe something more complex is going on, we will guide you in the right direction – whether that’s an ophthalmologist, your GP or the hospital. 👩‍⚕️🏥

A common question is what’s the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist? 🤷‍♂️

While optometrists provide primary care, on the other hand ophthalmologist are medical specialists who provide tertiary care. They manage more complex conditions, perform surgery and treat more advanced eye conditions (usually via a referral).

By providing the services and care that we do, an optometrist’s role in the community helps to:
