It can be common to carry tension in our feet and lower legs without even realising it. Long days on our feet, busy schedules, sport, standing at work, the list goes on!

Magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation and nervous system regulation. When magnesium levels are low, we can experience muscle tightness, cramping, restlessness, or difficulty winding down at night.

Using a magnesium spray on the feet before bed has become a popular self-care ritual. The skin on the soles of the feet is thick and rich in pores, making it an easy place to apply.

Many people find it can help with:
• Night-time foot or calf cramps
• Restless legs
• General muscle tension
• Creating a calming bedtime routine

A quick note: magnesium spray can feel a bit tingly at first - that’s normal and usually settles quickly. Applying to damp skin or following with moisturiser can help.

While it’s not a magic fix, it can be a lovely supportive addition to an evening wind-down routine!

Part 1 of some happy snaps from our team day last Friday! We kicked off with breaky at the Pavillion and then a Croquet lesson with the lovely John which we all enjoyed a lot! After becoming croquet pros we had a bbq lunch before heading back to the clinic for our session with Kit where our theme was Neuroimmume interactions in musculoskeletal conditions! I’ll share a part 2 post where we’ll h pack a bit more about this theme and the discussions that came up!

After years of looking at feet, there are certain things podiatrists can notice almost instantly’

We notice:
• how toes sit and move
• pressure patterns on the skin
• nail changes
• how shoes are wearing down
• how weight moves across the foot

These things give us insight about your movement, habits, footwear and sometimes even general health. These seemingly small details can often point to a much bigger picture, and helps us to understand why something is painful or not moving quite the way it should!

Podiatrists - what would you add to this list??

Do you struggle to switch off at night?
Your feet can actually play a role in this!

Our feet are full of nerve endings and sensory receptors, which constantly send information to the brain about balance, pressure, and safety. When feet feel uncomfortable, restricted, or sore, the nervous system can stay slightly on alert, which makes it harder to fully relax and settle into sleep.

There’s also a temperature connection.
Warming the feet before bed (think cosy socks or a warm shower) helps blood vessels open and signals the body that it’s time to wind down. This natural drop in core body temperature is an important part of falling asleep.

And of course, the annoying foot discomfort at night - aching arches, tight calves, cramping, or restless feet - can interrupt sleep cycles without you even realising why you’re waking.

Here are some simple ways to support better sleep through your feet:
• Gentle foot stretches before bed
• Warm socks in cooler weather
• A short barefoot walk on safe surfaces
• Checking that daily footwear isn’t causing hidden irritation

Sleep is when the body repairs, restores, and resets. Supporting your feet is one small but powerful way to support deeper rest. If you’re someone who resonates with these struggles, we’d love to hear if you found this helpful!

Why foot strength matters!

Your feet contain over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments all working together to support movement!

These small intrinsic muscles help:
• stabilise the arch
• control balance
• adapt to uneven surfaces
• absorb forces during walking and running

When these muscles become weak or inactive, other tissues can take on more load, which can then cause other issues and injuries.

Your foot strength is important because when this is lacking, it’s a flow on effect to other areas of your body!

Got any questions regarding your foot strength? Ask us at your next apt!

Load management: one of the big factors in many foot injuries!
Our tissues adapt well to gradual increases in activity. But when load increases too quickly - whether from running, sport, standing or walking - tissues can struggle to keep up.

This is why many injuries appear after:
• sudden training increases
• returning to activity too quickly
• changing routines abruptly

Managing load carefully allows the body time to adapt and strengthen. We know this can be hard being patient or it can feel like you’re not doing much at times, but playing the long game does pay off!!

We love a hot day, but the downside is that they can often leave your feet and ankles feeling heavy or puffy. This is because the warm weather can cause blood vessels to widen and fluid to pool in the lower limbs. Long periods of standing, sitting or travel can make this more noticeable.

A few simple ways to help:
• Keep moving where possible
• Elevate legs when resting
• Stay hydrated
• Wear breathable, well-fitting shoes

If swelling is sudden, painful or persistent, it’s always worth getting checked, so don’t forget to bring it up at your next appointment with us ☺️

Although it’s something you might not think about often, our feet don’t stay the same from infancy to adulthood: they grow, adapt and respond to everything life throws at them.

In babies and toddlers, feet are soft, flexible and a little squishy. This is completely normal. Their wide, flat feet help them balance as they learn to stand, walk and explore the world!

In childhood, bones strengthen and arches begin to form. Active play, barefoot time and well-fitting shoes help support natural development during these important years.

In teenage and adult years, feet take on higher loads: think activities like sport, work, long days standing, running, and general busy lifestyles. Footwear, movement habits and recovery all influence how feet feel and function.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes increase flexibility in ligaments, often causing feet to widen, arches to flatten and swelling to occur. Many women notice permanent size changes after pregnancy!

As we age, skin thins, fat padding reduces, joints can stiffen and balance may change. Keeping feet strong, mobile and well cared for helps maintain independence and confidence in movement.

If you’re noticing some changes that you’re unsure about, don’t hesitate to chat with us about it at your next appointment 🙏🏽

We are at the Neil Porter Legacy South West careers expo today - come say hi!

We are hoping to do our bit for the profession of podiatry and spread the word about our fascinating and rewarding profession.
New graduates in podiatry are in very low numbers across the country and this affects everyone, patients with longer waiting times and increases risk of burnout to both those already working in the profession and those coming into it.

We still notice people asking why would you want to cut toenails? Of which we constantly explain we do soo much more than that!
So we will be at the wannon rooms today showcasing all the incredible, life changing and saving things that podiatrists do and why we love our jobs hoping to inspire the new era of podiatrists!
