Learning that rest is as important as movement. 😌

I have not been to the gym all week. I had plans to tuck it into a spare hour of my Saturday morning BUT I am exhausted. Work has been crazy busy. The kids needs have been crazy high…and I am learning that to rest is ok. To say no to stuff is ok. To do nothing is sometimes what you need more than anything else.

Otherwise, I’m going to burn out.

Here’s to breaking lifelong habits of always having to fill every hour of every day. 😅🤩

My puppy man is lapping up the love today in the clinic. 🥺❤️

This cutie pie never fails to engage with my clients. He’s such a great icebreaker. How can you not fall for this sweet face?!? 🥰

Sometimes in the face to face clinic, when someone tells me they’ve got pets, I whip out photos of my little tribe of paws 🐕🐶🐈‍⬛🐈and we trade stories about the shenanigans of a pets life. 🐾 Nothing to do with nutrition, but everything to do with comfort, safety and humanising a clinical environment.

This is what I do to keep myself a healthy midlife woman 💪✨

I eat to a routine so I don’t skip meals 🍲

I balance my nutrition needs in most (protein, fibre, fats, colour!) 🥦

I schedule my exercise into my week 🏃‍♀️. It’s one of the best tools I’ve got for midlife mama mental health and managing my ADHD brain. You can always tell when I haven’t been active because I’m grisly AF 😅

I make time for connection ☕. My bestie and I have even started regular phone chats because, despite living within walking distance, life keeps getting in the way of a proper catch-up 🙃

I keep up to date with my health checks and screens 🩺 and I’m open with my GP (who is pretty fabulous, to be honest) about everything regarding my physical and mental health 💬

These little anchors help me feel steady and supported in the chaos of midlife.

✨ Papaya magic ✨

There’s just something about papaya—the look, the smell, the taste—it instantly transports you to a tropical resort 🏝️ (true story: a mate walked into my kitchen one morning and said exactly that!).

While papaya is growing in popularity here in Australia, I still speak to so many people who haven’t tried it yet. Which is a shame, because this fruit is an absolute gem: 💎

🥭 Nutrient rich → packed with vitamin C, beta-carotene (vitamin A), fibre and potassium
💪 Antioxidants like lycopene & beta-carotene → help protect cells, support skin health & reduce oxidative stress
🧡 Supports immunity, skin + gut health
✨ Low energy, high nutrient density

How to enjoy it?
👉 Red papaya: sweet and juicy, perfect fresh as a snack or brekkie topper.
👉 Green papaya: shred it into a zingy salad for something different.

The best part? Red papaya is becoming more easily available in local supermarkets (yep, even Aldi!). No excuses not to give it a go.

🌸 A bunch of flowers can say a lot.

This young client with Autism gifted me these simply because I did something every person deserves: I enquired, listened, validated, and supported her in a neuro-affirming way.

After years of being unheard—and put through restrictive, weight-focused dieting by other health professionals—we went the opposite road:
✨ Nutrition-inclusive care
✨ Food chaining to gently expand her acceptable foods
✨ Regular eating to support emotional regulation, energy & concentration

And the result? A huge reduction in binge episodes at the end of the day, better health, better sense of being able to make her own decisions about food, a reduced fear of foods, and feeling like she is okay to just be herself.

This is the stuff that makes me love my job.

It’s not hard to listen. But it can make a world of difference. 💜

At Food & Life, I support people to build a healthier relationship with food and eating. My approach is grounded in non-judgement, empathy and really understanding why a person eats the way they do. I work alongside clients to build knowledge, confidence and capacity so that nourishing themselves feels more possible. 🌱

I work with clients aged 10 years and up, with special interests in:
✨ Disordered eating & eating disorders
✨ Women’s health, especially in midlife
✨ Gut health
✨ Mental health
✨ Eating issues related to neurodivergence

I support clients through Medicare, NDIS and privately. Appointments are available face-to-face in Watsonia or online via telehealth. 💻

You might’ve heard that kiwifruit helps with constipation. Is it true?

Yes—and the research is actually pretty strong.

But first: constipation isn’t just about “not going every day.” It can look like:
🪨 Hard or lumpy stools
😣 Straining or feeling blocked
💨 Bloating or discomfort
🚽 Feeling like you didn’t fully empty

Clinical trials have shown that eating 2 green kiwifruits per day (flesh only) can:
✅ Improve how often you go
✅ Soften stools (without the side effects of harsher laxatives)
✅ Reduce bloating
✅ Decrease straining
✅ Improve overall gut comfort

One large international study even found kiwifruit outperformed psyllium husk for people with IBS or functional constipation.

And what about the skin?
Studies on gold kiwifruit found that eating the skin + flesh may add a little extra fibre and anti-inflammatory benefit. But you’ll still get results with just the flesh—so if you’re not a fan of the fuzzy texture, no stress.

And of course, if you don’t like kiwifruit? Don’t eat kiwifruit!!

There are other food-based strategies that can support regularity and digestive comfort—without forcing anything that doesn’t suit you.

There is also a kiwifruit based supplement that might suit you.
