Harmony Week is a time to celebrate diversity, inclusion and the richness of different cultures, identities and lived experiences 🧡

At DMC Support, we are committed to providing inclusive, respectful maternity care for parents with disabilities - because everyone deserves to feel supported, heard and empowered throughout their pregnancy and parenting journey.

We celebrate diversity not just this week, but every day.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day, a day to celebrate the strengths, achievements and contributions of people with Down syndrome.

People with Down syndrome belong in every part of our communities, including parenthood.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience family life, supported by inclusive systems and accessible care.

At DMC Support, we believe in supporting parents with disability to feel confident, empowered and supported throughout pregnancy and early parenthood.

We love supporting our community and do this by supporting a local sewing group in our centre every week. We have a mixed group of all ages who are learning to sew or rediscovering the joys of sewing.
Our sewing teacher Fay has a wealth of knowledge which she shares with everyone in her role as volunteer teacher. A BIG THANKYOU to Fay for her time and expertise!

Different ways of thinking strengthen our community.

This week we recognise Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity in how people think, learn and experience the world.

Neurodivergent individuals bring insight, creativity, problem-solving and unique perspectives. Neurodivergent differences may include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and Tourette’s syndrome.

Creating inclusive communities means recognising these strengths and ensuring environments are supportive, respectful and accessible for everyone.

At DMC Support, we remain committed to supporting individuals and families in ways that recognise and respect neurodivergent experiences.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we recognise and celebrate the strength, determination and leadership of women in our community.

We are especially proud to acknowledge the incredible women on our Gold Coast team Jess, Beck and Amy. The recent care they have provided to families during pregnancy and the postnatal period reflects the professionalism, compassion and deep respect for the women and families they support.
Their work helps create space where women feel heard, valued and supported.

We also honour the women in our community, women living with disabilities, whose strength, resilience and compassion help shape our community every day 🧡

Have you heard of Matrescence?

This week, our DMC Support team attended a webinar on all things matrescence presented by Occupational Therapist Tess Cini

Matrescence describes the developmental transition into motherhood - a time of significant and inevitable change, including physical, emotional, spiritual and identity shifts.

It is a major life transition that can bring joy, uncertainty, exhaustion and growth all at once.

If you’re finding this stage challenging, you’re not alone - and the right support can make a big difference 🧡

Today is a good day to reflect on where we have been, and how far we have come. The theme this year for International Day of Persons with disabilties is fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.

When I think back to when I did my nursing qualifications, many people with disabilities were institutionalised and segregated from society. Since then, there have been so many changes to inclusion for people with disabilities. But we still have a way to go - from changing ableist attitudes, to inclusion of people with disabilities to make choices to become parents and be supported to do so.

Every year, this day is good to reflect on the steps we have each taken over the year to make our society more inclusive. Thank you to all of you who take little and big steps to fostering inclusion.

Recently, I had the privilege of talking with Careseekers, an organisation that provides high quality support workers to work with other organisations.

Parenting can be challenging for anyone but for parents with disability, stigma and lack of support often make it harder. We spoke with Namira Williams, founder of DMC Support, about how her team is breaking down barriers and helping families thrive.
