Since the use of the oracle bones script, whose date is debated to be between 1500 and 2100 BC, the concept of Qi has been present in Chinese thought. Related to air, this concept has shaped the way the ancient sages, doctors, and laypeople looked at the world as well as directly influencing almost every area of Chinese culture.

Qi is called one of the Three Jewels of Chinese culture along with Jing and Shen.
