Have you met Pamela?

Pamela joined us back in November 2024 and has been working part time.

Pamela studied in the Philippines and passed her OT licensure exam 9 years ago. She has worked in sensory integration in the Philippines and in adult and paediatric community settings in rural victoria. She has a great approach to therapy, with a practical mix of occupation focused "top-down" strategies as well as a great knowledge of sensory processing. This year she is taking Professional Development in anxiety management, interoception, toileting, and regulation.

When she isn't at work she likes trying new recipes from reels, and says while she is not great at golf (YET - we love a growth mindset) she finds it helpful to slow down after work.

We are excited to announce that from term 2 Pamela will be increasing her hours which means we get her FULL TIME and therefore have some immediate capacity for therapy, if you get in quick!

It's been 5 years since Sensory Smart Kids moved to Geelong, so it's time I re-introduced myself. I'm Bec, the director of Sensory Smart kids and my life is as busy and messy as this post!

I finished my OT degree in 2007, and since then I've worked in special schools, private practices, hospital and community health services. I was introduced to Ayres Sensory Integration when I worked in London and worked in an amazing sensory clinic. I love giving kids and the adults who support them access to a sensory framework so that they can understand the strengths and challenges of their child, advocate for them, challenge them, and unlock the joy of achieving things they didn't know they could do.

I started working in Geelong just a few short days per week while my eldest was in pre-school and alongside mum life I've slowly grown my practice and built a clinical space that I'm really proud of and love working in. Every day I work with kids to meet them where they are at, fidning the "just right challenge" to push them gently out of their comfort zone and learn new things about themselves. Sometimes we are working on motor skills, self-care skills, cognitive strategies, or sensory diets. We do it playfully, because for so many of the kids we work with, everyday tasks can feel like hard work.
I strive for neuroaffirming therapy but acknowledge that this is an evolving space. As someone who has recently discovered my own neurodivergence, I have some insight, but every experience is unique.

Today is International Women's Day and we want to acknowledge the women in our profession who are emplowering girls to engaging in education, trust their body, strengthen their emotional resilience and build their confidence so that they can fiercely go out into the world.

Yep. Even as adults, we sometimes need to “OT” ourselves with some executive functioning supports. It’s especially important when we’re more busy, tired, or starting a new habit or routine.

Tired parents we see you!
We love having you present in our sessions but acknowledge the load you carry.
The cloudsacs in the clinic are very comfy and you are always welcome to pop out for a 15 minute Power Nap in your car if that works for you. Or if a brisk walk around the block or a coffee from one of the local spots is more your regulator style that is fine too.

Sleep Issues in ASD: What Every Family Should Know ❤😴

💤 About 53% of children with autism struggle with sleep—whether it’s falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Poor sleep can impact attention, learning, and behavior.

✨ Helpful at-home strategies:
🛁 Epsom salt baths (½–1 cup) in warm water—add a drop of lavender oil for extra calm.
📵 Avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime.
🕰 Create a consistent routine with quiet music, weighted blankets, and a dark, peaceful room.
📡 Reduce EMF exposure by turning off Wi-Fi and unplugging devices at night.
🏃‍♂️ Daily exercise + 💧 good hydration can improve sleep quality.

🩺 If sleep doesn’t improve, talk to your child’s doctor about possible causes like:
