Is your running form causing you to develop injuries??

This is often presumed in the running world, but we more often see injuries linked to training errors.

Yes there are sometimes things we can tinker with in relation to running form that may make a runner more efficient, but it's not the only thing to consider.

In a running assessment, we like to look at a wide range of things:
-Your running and injury history
-Your upcoming goals or events
-Your current shoe rotation
-Your muscle strength in key areas required for running

So when you have a running assessment, it's not just about how you run. Book a running assessment and lets look at the big picture.

And guess what? If you are competing at Jetty 2 Jetty this year, you can get access to a very special offer on a 60 minute running assessment.

We came across this infographic last week thanks to
This details out APMA's 'guidelines for choosing a children's shoe'.
Unfortunately though, it seems like their guidelines are carrying very outdated information.

-Their first recommendation was a stiff heel counter. This is designed to limit movement, but kids don't need these sort of stability features for their flexible flat feet. Not to mention heel counters increase the overall weight of the shoe.
- Their second recommendation was the shoe should flex at the forefoot. Yes this is technically true, but often shoes are so thick through the midsole that most shoes aren't flexible enough. We don't want a kids foot to have to fight the shoe to get that flexibility.
- Their final point is probably to me the most shocking, especially for kids recommendations. They recommended a RIGID MIDSOLE. Yes, you read that right. Rigid. They even had the audacity to state that "Your shoe should never twist in the middle". I'm sorry, but kids feet are meant to move!!! We don't have bricks for feet, so why should we wear shoes that promote NO MOVEMENT. Kids shoes need the complete opposite of this recommendation. The more the shoe can bend and twist, the better!!!

So what do we recommend for kids shoes. Well, to be quite frank, the complete opposite of this infographic. A shoe that protects normal development and is as close to barefoot as possible is what we will recommend for the vast majority of kids we see in the clinic.

Thankfully on further investigating, this infographic is no longer on their website, but its still out there to be found

Every runner should be working on their calf muscle strength, and here's why:

-The calf muscle aids in propulsion when running. Every time you push off the ground, that calf muscle is working.

-Having calf based strength and plyometrics as part of your training week can help improve your performance (win!!)

-The calf muscles absorb impact forces as you land during running. The Achilles tendon helps store this energy and then release it into the next step!

Have you worked on your calf strength this week?

Got pain around the heel? Give this taping technique a try.

Start with an anchor around the edge of the foot, and apply horizontal strips across the heel. Finish with a final anchor around the foot to hold it together!

This taping can stay on for a couple of days, provided it is kept dry and isn't causing any skin irritation.

What can this be used for?
-Bruised heel
-Fat pad irritation
-Plantar fasciitis

What is the Brooks Glycerin Flex best used for, and how can it fit into your shoe rotation?

Having a shoe like the Glycerin Flex could be a great addition in your shoe rotation. With its 6mm drop and its flexible forefoot, it gives the foot a bit more work to do, compared to some of the other shoes currently on the market.

What does the Brooks Glycerin Flex feel like to run in?

The forefoot of the Glycerin Flex is, as the name suggests, very flexible. Its actually quite stable when you land, due to the large piece of midsole on the inside of the heel that is one continuous piece, but once you get up onto the ball of the foot for propulsion, the flex grooves in the midsole allow you to move onto your forefoot quite easily.
I've found this makes a great shoe for short up tempo sessions, and hill repeats, where you are getting up onto the ball of your foot quickly.
