Pelvic floor basics with our Pelvic Health Physio, Lauren 🍐

Lauren’s calm and caring approach helps so many of our clients feel comfortable and supported from their very first appointment at Pear.

In this video, Lauren is sitting in one of our treatment rooms at Pear, using a pelvic model to explain where the pelvic floor sits and what it does.

Transcript:
“A lot of people don’t actually know where the pelvic floor is.
So let’s start there- where it sits within the bony pelvis.
If we imagine the pelvis flipped up, this whole area forms the pelvic floor. There are two main layers, a more superficial layer closer to the skin, and a deeper layer that sits further inside the pelvis.
These layers work together to perform a few important functions.
The pelvic floor helps support your pelvic organs, which plays a role in preventing things like prolapse.
It also helps with bladder and bowel control, allowing you to hold on when you need to find a toilet, and reducing leakage.
It contributes to s*xual function, and also works with your hips and core to support stability and movement.”

At Pear, our pelvic health physios and exercise physiologists collaborate to connect what’s happening in your pelvis, to how you move in the gym.

Pelvic health isn’t just about isolated exercises like kegals - it shows up in how you lift, run, breathe and build strength….

Working with our Physiotherapists helps you understand
– what your pelvic floor is doing (or not doing)
– what symptoms you’re experiencing might mean (leaking when you cough, or when you run)
– where you might benefit from more support (like pessary), down-training, or strengthening

And then our Exercise Physiologists help you take that into:
– how you lift in the gym
– how you breathe under load (breath hold? Or exhale?)
– how you can be guided to return to running or impact as quickly as your goal is
– how you build strength safely and progressively when navigating things like prolapse or pelvic pain

It’s not just “do your pelvic floor exercises” in isolation in pelvic floor rehabilitation! It’s integrating them into real life, real movement, real strength and real change.

This is how we bridge the gap between rehab, recovery and performance here at Pear 🍐

What does a DEXA scan actually tell you? 🦴

A DEXA scan looks at your bone density ie. how strong your bones are. But those T-scores and Z-scores? Let’s simplify 👇

Your T-score compares your bone density to a healthy young adult (the “gold standard”).
• 0 to -1 → Normal bone density
• -1 to -2.5 → Reduced bone density or osteopenia
• Below -2.5 → osteoporosis
So a T score is how far are you from your strongest possible bones.

Z-score = compares you to others your age and s*x
It asks are your bones where we’d expect for you?

At Pear, this isn’t just a number - we use your scan to guide your exact exercise prescription - two people can have the same T-score but need very different plans depending on things like pelvic floor health, age, training history, hormone therapy, injury or fracture history.

Bone is living tissues, and needs the right dose of
✔️ Strength training
✔️ Impact loading
✔️ Safe progression over time
Because bones adapt when we load them well 💪

A DEXA scan doesn’t just tell you where your bones are at…
It tells us how to move forward safely and effectively! Want to get a scan? Chat to us for a referral code to our recommended clinic 🦴

At Pear, we are passionate about Women's Health! Our team provide services to support pregnancy, birth, menopause, cancer, pelvic pain, injury rehabilitation and surgical rehabilitation post mastectomy & hysterectomy. We support women through every stage of life, and our team of Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists, Remedial Massage Therapists & Nutritionists have additional training to work with Women. We recognise that there is a lack of support for women who experience injuries, illnesses or chronic diseases such as endometriosis or abdominal separation and want to help bridge the gap between diagnoses, acute rehabilitation and long term recovery and management. We hope to break down the barriers of taboo and stigma in Womens Health, by providing specialist services from our baby friendly studio, and helping all women to use exercise as medicine to improve their health.
