Two people are born when a baby enters the world- the baby AND the new mother. Motherhood is beautiful, messy, scary, overwhelming, joyful, exhausting, lonely, heart-filled.....the list goes on and on. Its a rollercoaster!

Having to look after a brand new, vulnerable little person when you feel vulnerable, achy, leaky, and exhausted yourself is really hard.
It is so important to set up your support system BEFORE baby comes so you can ease yourself into the transition to motherhood feeling nurtured, nourished, and cared for (just like you are providing all of those things for your baby- You need those things too mama!)

In Western culture particularly, we are missing our village. And with the current global situation, many of us are missing our mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers, and friends. So our support systems are getting smaller and smaller.

I absolutely LOVE supporting women on their journey to motherhood and helping them thrive and settle into their role as mothers.
Whether it's a woman's first or sixth baby, she gets reborn each time and continues to need support.

What postpartum advice would you give an expectant mama?

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't breastfeed because you had/are having a caesarean birth. Due to many different circumstances, establishing a strong breastfeeding relationship and routine with your baby may take a bit longer than with baby's born vaginally. But with support from your partner, a doula, midwife, and/or lactation consultant it is very do-able.

Some ways to support your breastfeeding journey after a caesarean birth include:

๐ŸคฑLet hospital staff know that you want to spend as much time as possible with your baby.
๐ŸคฑExpress colostrum if you can't get baby to the breast straight away.
๐ŸคฑLots of skin-to-skin with you and baby as soon as possible after birth (or with dad and baby if it's not possible with mum straight away).
๐ŸคฑLimit the amount of people that hold your newborn baby.
๐ŸคฑTry different positions and holds until you find one that is comfortable after your surgery.
๐ŸคฑAsk for help from your partner (they can bring baby to you and help to hold baby whilst he/she is breastfeeding).
๐ŸคฑBreastfeed frequently throughout the day and night so your baby learns to breastfeed. This will also help with engorgement and set up your milk supply.

Breastfeeding isn't easy but the benefits for you and your baby in the short and long term are huge. With the right support, most people can breastfeed.

To set yourself up for the most successful breastfeeding journey it is really important to plan. Much like you plan your wedding or your birth experience, it is important to plan for your breastfeeding journey.

Please reach out if you would like some support to plan your breastfeeding journey.

I spent the morning nurturing and nourishing a beautiful new mama today. I love taking over the kitchen and using up all the veggies in the fridge and getting creative making lots of yummy food and snacks for mama's and their family.

This mama was getting ready to take bub on his first camping trip so I whipped up a few different healthy, tasty and nutritious snacks she could take along with her; mini veggie quiches, mixed veg frittas, and banana blueberry and apple muffins. And a cauliflower and potato soup to put in the freezer, ready for when she returns from camping.

One aspect of life that becomes difficult once having a bubba, is cooking healthy nutritious meals. Time and energy are lacking and food falls on the back burner. So to be able to cook lovingly and nutritiously for mum's, truly fills my cup.

Cooking and baking is just one aspect of my postpartum offering. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more about what I can offer you and your family in your postpartum period.

This is a small stack of the books included in my doula library.

I love reading all things pregnancy, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, women's health, menstruation, natural remedies, history of birth, and birth stories.

I also love being able to provide women and their partner's access to information and education on these topics.

As the saying goes: 'knowledge is power!' And that can't be more true in the birth space. You don't know what you don't know. But by reading lots of different literature from different authors, it will broaden your knowledge and guide you to map out the kind of birth that you want (and solidify what you don't want). It will help you navigate the health system (or help you decide to avoid it all together).

So today I'm organising my doula library and finally creating a list of the books that I have available to lend to my beautiful clients.

What are some of your favourite pregnancy/birth/postpartum/breastfeeding related books?

The ocean is my contemplative space, my healing space, and my reflective space. I often come to the beach to ground myself and recharge myself. Whilst walking along the sand this morning I felt inspired to be creative and write a poem. So whilst I'm sitting here on the sand I thought I'd share it with you.
๐Ÿ’™
๐Ÿ’™
๐Ÿ’™
She sprawls herself across the sand unapologetically,
Frothing with energy and excitement as she rolls her way up the shore,
Expelling treasures and kissing discarded debris,
She is pulled with force as she retreats back into herself,
Leaving a soaking reminder of her presence.
She is loud.
She is playful.
She is dark and mysterious.
She is hypnotic.
She is calming.
She is secretive and seductive.
She is soulful.
She is medicinal.
She is wet and voluminous.
She is wild.
She is untamed.
She is ever changing.
She is the earths energy and pull.
She is your connection to past and present.
She is your grounding source.
She is the waves that caress your feet as you stand at her boundary and take her all in.
She is the soothing and enveloping ocean that holds you and loves you and rocks you.
She is your teacher of life and self.
Respect her.
Care for her.
Love her.
๐ŸŒŠ

I haven't written poetry for a really long time but this morning, walking mindfully alone along the shore this poem flowed out of me. It feels good to be creative again.

What is your go to calming, re-centering space?

Take just one minute with me to stop what you're doing.
Clear your mind.
Take a deep breath in through your nose.
Hold it.
Now breathe out through your nose a long slow breath out.
Focus on the beautiful sound of the waves. Feel their calm and power both at the same time.
Ground yourself.
Be present in this moment for just 1 minute. For 60 seconds just be still.
You don't need to be doing anything else but just be here, now, in this moment.
Breathe.
Just breathe.
You are loved.
You are seen.
You matter.
You are AMAZING!

Just sending out a reminder for any mama's that are currently pregnant.

A great mantra to remember particularly when you are being told you:
"have to"
"should"
"need to"
"must"
"if you don't your baby will die"

At the end of the day it is your body, your womb, and your choice to birth how you want to. You don't need permission. You don't need to explain. You just do you mama!

I have been working on this crochet pregnant and birthing mama for the last few weeks and I have finally finished her. And I love her! ๐Ÿ’—

She will be such a wonderful educational tool to show older siblings of pregnant mama's the process of birth in a fun and interactive way.

I can't wait for her to come to my next prenatal session ๐Ÿฅฐ

Now all she is missing is a name. Any ideas of what I should name her?

In Western culture, the postpartum period is not often talked about or acknowledged. But when it is, the language we hear in reference to it is often about women returning BACK to their pre-baby self. The expectation is that our life and our body just go BACK to how they were before we had a baby. But there is no going back. There is only going forward. And that will look different than your pre-baby life.
And that is ok. It is more than ok. It is normal. You will now be experiencing life in a whole new way. It will look different, sound different, smell different, and you will feel different. Labour and birth are a beautiful and messy life changing rite of passage.

You've probably done a lot to get ready for your birth; written a birth plan, attended antenatal classes or hypnobirthing classes, read lots of books and/or blogs, joined Facebook groups for support and information, packed your birth bag full of lots of items to make your labour and birth experience as comfortable as possible, chosen your support person/team to help you through the big day/ night. Am I right?

But have you planned your postpartum?
When your main focus has been on your labour and birth, it's so easy to forget that the hard work begins once baby is born.
Of course it's important to plan and prepare for labour and birth. But it's equally important to prepare for your postpartum.

What does your postpartum feel like and look like to YOU? Not what you think it should look like or what your mum/partner/sister/aunty thinks it should look like. What does it look like to you? What do YOU want? What do you want to experience? How do you want to heal? What do you want to eat? Who do you want to see? Who is going to support you?

You deserve to take time to heal, to rest, to be nourished, to be nurtured, and to be supported. And you can not do it all alone. It is important to ask for help and to say "yes" when help is offered.

Let me know if you would like help preparing for your postpartum ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm getting my baking on and making lactation cookies today for a mama who has just birthed her bubba.

What are lactation cookies did I hear you ask?

They are delicious cookies that are nutrient dense, offer a boost of B-vitamins and iron, healthy fats, and include natural galactagogues (a substance that promotes lactation). The ingredients I used in these cookies to naturally help support mum's milk supply are:
- Whole Grain Oats
- Brewer's Yeast
- Flaxseed
- Coconut Oil

By combining these ingredients (along with other tasty extras - I added dried cranberries, banana, and flaked almonds) into a cookie, it makes it an easy, practical, and tasty snack for a breastfeeding mama.

But you don't have to be breastfeeding to enjoy these cookies. No, you won't start lactating if you eat them and haven't had a baby ๐Ÿคฃ

I'm going to take 10 minutes out of my day to enjoy one now whilst they are still warm and drink a hot cup of turmeric tea and watch the rain before going to pick up miss 5 from school.

Have you tried lactation cookies to naturally support or boost your milk supply before?

She's definitely the daughter of a birth worker ๐Ÿคฃ

We went to the library yesterday and I told her she can have a look around and choose a few books. She found this "Making a Baby" book and wanted me to read it to her 3 times and discuss every page. We were sitting in the middle of a small library so I spoke in a really low voice and even whispered the words "v***a" and "p***s" lol but as she is 5 and doesn't really understand the concept (or need) of being discreet, she continuesd to ask questions in an 'outside voice'. So of course I was getting funny looks from the librarian and other library goers. But hey, now her questions are answered and she has a wonderful understanding about the process of pregnancy and birth, in an age appropriate way.

It's now her favourite book lol. We visited my friend afterwards and she insisted on bringing the book into my friends house so she could show her her new favourite book too.

If you have a child as inquisitive as mine that keeps asking you where baby's come from, I highly recommend this book. I felt it was age appropriate (my daughter is nearly 6) and discussed lots of different ways family's come to be (surrogacy, IVF, natural birth, c-section) and different family structures (raised by grandparents, same s*x couples, parents with disabilities).

I can only imagine the chit chat at lunch time with her friends once school goes back ๐Ÿคฃ
