Did you know using public transport can build independence? 🚆

For many young people, catching a bus or train can feel overwhelming at first.

Practicing these everyday situations helps build important life skills such as:

• Reading timetables
• Navigating new places
• Understanding travel routines
• Problem-solving
• Building confidence in the community

These small steps help young people feel more confident and capable navigating the world around them.

How do you build confidence in the community? Sometimes it starts with ordering a coffee. ☕

For many young people, simple everyday situations like ordering at a café can feel overwhelming.

Practicing these moments helps build important life skills such as:

• Communicating with new people
• Making choices and decisions
• Handling money and payments
• Waiting their turn
• Building confidence in public spaces

These small experiences help young people feel more comfortable navigating the world around them.

It might look like a simple grocery trip… but it’s actually building life skills. 🍎

Choosing fruit, managing money, making decisions, and navigating the community are all part of developing independence.

These everyday moments help build confidence and real-world skills that support participants to feel more comfortable and capable in the community.

This is the kind of learning that happens naturally through our community-based activities at Life Purpose Australia.

Term 1 is officially underway for our Girls Weekend Social Group, and it was a great first session back.

Vision boards.
Favourite songs added to our playlist.
Card games.
New friendships starting.
Familiar friendships picking right back up.

What we saw last Saturday: girls settling in quickly, joining conversations, sharing interests and feeling comfortable in the group, exactly what these sessions are designed to support.

A strong, positive start to the term.

Movie day didn’t just happen, it was planned.

The group noticed the space was too bright, talked it through, weighed up options, and worked together to put a solution in place so their plan could go ahead.

These moments build real skills: planning, problem-solving, communication, decision-making, and teamwork.

This isn’t just an activity.

This is independence being built.

Social skills grow when teens do life together.

During our School Holiday Program, the girls worked side-by-side to plan, organise and set up their own picnic, with guidance from their mentors. From sharing ideas to taking responsibility and problem-solving as a group, these moments are where real learning happens.

Communication & teamwork
Planning & organisation
Confidence in social settings
Independence with support

Add in creative sessions and fun outings, and you start to see friendships build and confidence grow, skills that carry over into everyday life.

This is social & life skills development in action

Saturday group focused on building real-life social skills in a calm, supportive environment.

Through shared activities like drawing, bracelet making, and a walk in the local park, the girls practiced communication, turn-taking, and spending time alongside peers.

Confidence continued to grow as conversations developed, experiences were shared, and connections strengthened.

These sessions are intentionally designed to support friendship-building and confidence in ways that carry over into everyday life, at school, in the community, and at home.

Everyday skills are built through practice, patience, and encouragement.

Learning things like food preparation, following steps, and working alongside others helps young people build confidence in their own abilities, one task at a time.

Skill development isn’t about rushing or getting it perfect.
It’s about creating opportunities to try, learn, and grow in a supportive environment, with guidance when needed and space to build independence.

Small moments like these often lead to big wins, not just in skills, but in self-belief.

A good support worker does more than show up.

For many young people, having a consistent support worker means having someone safe to learn from, practise social skills with, and grow confidence around without pressure or judgement.

It’s about:
• modelling respectful communication
• encouraging independence at the right pace
• being present, patient and reliable
• building trust through everyday moments

Positive role models matter. Especially during the teen years, when confidence, identity and social skills are still developing.

Sometimes support isn’t about doing more, it’s about being there in the right way.
