OUR TEAM OF GPs: HERE FOR EVERY STAGE OF LIFE

5 Ways Our Mission Healthcare GPs Support All Stages of Life
1. The Best Start: Infants and Children
Our GPs are here from the moment your family begins. We provide essential care for infants and children, including all scheduled immunisations and regular growth and developmental monitoring. We give parents the confidence and practical advice they need to help their little ones thrive from day one.

2. Teenage and Young Adult Wellbeing
The adolescent and young adult years bring new health challenges. Our team offers non-judgemental support for mental health concerns, sexual health advice, and management of issues like acne or chronic fatigue. We provide a safe, private space for young people to discuss sensitive health topics.

3. Dedicated Women’s and Men’s Health
In your peak adult years, preventative screening becomes crucial. We provide dedicated women's health services (like Cervical Screening Tests and contraceptive advice) and men's health assessments (focusing on prostate, heart health, and mental wellness). We ensure you maintain peak health while juggling family and work.

4. Proactive Mid-Life and Chronic Disease Management
As you move into mid-life, our focus shifts to prevention and maintenance. We manage common conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, and use comprehensive visits (like the Medicare-funded 45–49 Year Old Health Check) to proactively identify and manage long-term health risks.

5. Care and Independence for Senior Years
For our senior patients, our GPs are focused on maintaining quality of life and independence. We conduct annual 75+ Health Assessments, manage complex medication regimes, assess fall risks, and coordinate with Allied Health and community services to ensure comfortable and safe aging at home.

Our doctors at Mission Healthcare Wendouree bring expertise across paediatrics, women’s health, men’s health, skin cancer checks, chronic care, and more. Whatever your health needs, we’re here for you.

HEALTH TIP: ALLIED HEALTH SUPPORT

5 Tips: Why Allied Health Support is Crucial

1. Providing Specialised, Practical Skills
Allied health professionals are experts in their specific fields, offering practical care that complements your GP's medical treatment. This could include a physiotherapist guiding post-injury recovery, a dietitian providing tailored nutrition plans, or a podiatrist sorting out your foot pain. They focus on improving daily function and quality of life.

2. Accessible Support via Care Plans (CDM)
If you live with a chronic disease (like diabetes or arthritis), our GPs can prepare a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan. This Medicare initiative helps coordinate care and allows you to access subsidised sessions with allied health providers, making expert, long-term support more affordable.

3. Critical for Injury Recovery and Mobility
When you're recovering from an injury or surgery, professionals like physiotherapists and occupational therapists are vital. They help you regain strength, improve mobility, and teach you safe movement patterns, ensuring you get back on your feet and back to enjoying life quickly and safely.

4. Holistic Care for Mental Wellbeing
Mental health care isn't just for psychiatrists! Allied health professionals like psychologists and counsellors are crucial for managing stress, anxiety, and depression. Our GPs can refer you under a Mental Health Care Plan for Medicare-rebated sessions, ensuring you get the comprehensive support you need for your mind.

5. Essential for Prevention and Education
Allied health providers are key educators. A dietitian can teach you how to shop and cook for better health, while an exercise physiologist can show you how to safely incorporate physical activity to manage weight or chronic pain. They give you the tools and knowledge to take control of your long-term health.

One-stop care. Beyond GP services, Wendouree offers allied health support for complete wellness under one roof. Book your appointment at www.missionhealthcare.com.au

HEALTH TIP: SUN SAFETY IN SPRINGS

5 Sun Safety Tips: Don't Be Fooled By Spring!
1. The UV Index Is Your Only Guide
Forget the temperature! In spring, the air might still be cool, but the UV Index is often dangerously high (3 or above) from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Make it a habit to check the forecast UV Index daily—if it's high, you need sun protection, regardless of clouds or cool breezes.

2. Slop on SPF 50+ Every Single Morning
If you got lazy over winter, it's time to re-establish your non-negotiable routine. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ to your face, neck, ears, and hands every day. That incidental exposure during the school drop-off or coffee run is what causes cumulative damage over the season.

3. Cover Up When Outdoors (Slip, Slap, Slide)
When you're out gardening, at the park, or watching sport, remember the core three: Slip on a long-sleeved shirt, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat (caps don't cover your ears!), and Slide on sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard. Clothing is your best sun barrier.

4. Don't Get Caught by the 'Peak Hour' UV
The sun's UV rays are strongest and most damaging during the middle of the day. If you can, Seek Shade between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. If you have to be out, double up on your layers and make sure your sunscreen is reapplied generously.

5. Reapply After Sweat or Swim
If you're getting active—spring sports, heavy gardening, or a quick dip in the pool—your sunscreen will wear off quickly. Always use a water-resistant sunscreen and be religious about reapplying every two hours (or immediately after towelling off or heavy sweating) to maintain proper protection.

PATIENT TIP: BULK BILLING EXPLAINED

Bulk Billing Explained: Essential Information
1. Zero Out-of-Pocket Costs for Eligible Services
Bulk billing is a direct payment method where the healthcare provider charges the Australian government (Medicare) the set fee for the medical service. This means that for the patient, there is absolutely no cost for the consultation or service (no gap fee).

2. The Medicare Card is Essential for Payment
To process a bulk-billed claim, the patient must be eligible for Medicare and present their valid Medicare card (or the digital card in the myGov app) at the time of the appointment. The patient then assigns their right to the Medicare benefit to the clinic to receive the free service.

3. Coverage Extends Beyond GP Visits
While commonly associated with general practice appointments, bulk billing can also cover many other services essential to health, including specific pathology tests (blood work), X-rays, and diagnostic imaging, provided the referring doctor and the facility agree to bulk bill the service.

4. Streamlines Administration and Follow-Up
Bulk billing significantly simplifies the patient experience. The clinic handles all the paperwork and claiming directly with Medicare, eliminating the need for the patient to pay upfront, hold onto receipts, and submit a claim to receive their rebate back later.

5. Not All Clinics or Services Bulk Bill
It is important to understand that bulk billing is not mandatory for all healthcare providers. Some doctors or clinics may choose to charge a private fee that is higher than the Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) amount, requiring the patient to pay a 'gap' difference. Patients should always confirm the clinic's billing policy beforehand.

HEALTH TIP: MENTAL HEALTH (SPRING)

5 Tips for Nurturing Your Mental Wellness This Spring

1. Soak Up the Sunshine Vitamin (Safely!)
As the days get longer, your body can naturally boost its Vitamin D levels from sunlight, which is a key player in regulating mood. Aim for safe, short periods of sun exposure when the UV Index is low (under 3, usually early morning or late afternoon). Just remember to follow SunSmart rules when the UV is high!

2. Embrace the 'Spring Clean' for Your Mind
Spring is all about renewal. Use that energy for a mental clean-up! Decluttering your living or workspace can lead to a surprising reduction in stress. This also applies to digital detox; try turning off notifications or limiting social media time to create more mental space.

3. Re-engage with Nature and Activity
The nicer weather in Bendigo means it's time to ditch the couch! Getting your body moving outdoors is one of the best ways to boost those feel-good chemicals (endorphins). Plan a walk on a local bush track, start gardening, or just sit outside for your morning cuppa to reconnect with the natural world.

4. Manage the Stress of Over-Scheduling
The warm weather can mean your calendar suddenly fills up with events, sports, and social catch-ups. While connecting is great, be mindful of over-scheduling. Know your limits and learn to say "no" without guilt. Protecting your time is vital for protecting your peace of mind.

5. Watch Out for the 'Spring Slump'
For some, the change of seasons can mess with sleep patterns or trigger anxiety due to hay fever and seasonal changes. If you notice a persistent drop in energy, increased worry, or poor sleep lasting more than a couple of weeks, don't just tough it out. Have a confidential chat with our GP. We're here to help you thrive this season.

Spring is a fresh start, but it can be overwhelming. Try setting routines, staying active outdoors, and seeking support if needed.

HEALTH TIP: Advantages of Sound Sleep!

5 Tips on Why Sleep is the Secret Weapon for Your Well-being

1. The Brain’s Overnight Clean-Up Crew
While you're dreaming, your brain is working overtime! Sleep is when your mind does its serious housekeeping, clearing out mental clutter and consolidating memories. Getting enough quality shut-eye is absolutely crucial for concentration, learning, and keeping your mind sharp during the day.

2. It’s a Massive Mood Regulator
If you've ever felt grumpy or emotional after a bad night's sleep, you know the score. Quality sleep is essential for regulating your hormones and improving your emotional resilience. Better sleep means you're far less likely to feel stressed, anxious, or short-tempered when the day throws a spanner in the works.

3. Essential for a Strong Immune System
Sleep is when your body repairs and regenerates itself, especially your immune system. If you consistently skimp on sleep, you're weakening your defences, making you more susceptible to picking up bugs like the common cold and flu. Think of a good night's rest as a booster shot for your natural immunity.

4. It Helps Control Your Hunger Levels
Did you know sleep affects your appetite? When you're tired, your body produces more ghrelin (the hormone that makes you feel hungry) and less leptin (the hormone that makes you feel full). Good sleep helps keep those hunger hormones in check, making healthy food choices during the day much easier.

5. If You're Struggling, Our GPs Can Help
Poor sleep is often a symptom of underlying issues like stress, pain, or anxiety. If you're consistently battling insomnia or waking up exhausted, don't suffer in silence. Book an appointment to chat with our GP. We can help identify the root cause and provide practical strategies or referrals to get your sleep patterns back on track.

Good sleep = good health. Sleep affects immunity, mood, and energy. If you’re struggling with sleep, talk to our GPs for support.

Health Tip: Women's Health
5 Tips for Women’s Health: Take Charge, Ladies!

1. The Cervical Screening Test (CST) is Vital
The Cervical Screening Test (CST)—which replaced the old Pap smear—is your best defence against cervical cancer. In Australia, it's recommended every five years for women aged 25 to 74. It's quick, simple, and can be bulk-billed at our clinic. Don't put it off, it could save your life!

2. Sort Out That Mid-Life Health Review
If you're in your 40s or 50s, menopause, osteoporosis risk, and heart health start needing a closer look. Our GPs are experts in guiding you through this transition, helping you manage symptoms like hot flushes and ensuring you get key screenings for conditions that disproportionately affect women in mid-life.

3. Don't Ignore the Mental Load
Women often juggle massive responsibilities, leading to significant mental and emotional stress. If you're feeling run-down, overwhelmed, or anxious, book an appointment. We can help you access resources, check-ups, and a Mental Health Care Plan to get some subsidised sessions with a psychologist—it's essential self-care.

4. Get Your Iron and Vitamin Checks Sorted
Many women, particularly those who are physically active, pregnant, or have heavy periods, can run low on vital nutrients like iron and Vitamin D. These deficiencies often lead to crushing fatigue. A simple blood test at our clinic can identify any shortfalls, and we can get you on the right supplements to boost your energy.

5. Breast Screening is a Non-Negotiable
For women aged 50 to 74, free mammograms are recommended every two years through the BreastScreen Australia program. Early detection makes a huge difference. If you're in that age bracket, or if you have any family history or concerns, make sure that appointment is locked in—it's a critical part of your health checklist.

Comprehensive women’s health. From cervical screening to fertility support, Mission Health Care - Wendouree GPs provide personalized care for every stage of life!

Patient Tip: Preparing for your GP Visit

Here are 5 Tips for Preparing for Your GP Visit

1. Write Down Your Top Three
Appointments often run to a tight schedule, so make sure your most important concerns get addressed. Before you walk in, write down your top three reasons for the visit (e.g., "Sore knee," "Medication review," "Feeling tired"). This keeps the chat focused and ensures you don't forget anything important.

2. Sort Out Your Medications List
If you're on any prescriptions, supplements, or even over-the-counter tablets, bring a clear list. Ideally, bring the actual bottles! This allows the doctor to check for potential interactions and ensures your medication dosages are all up-to-date and correctly noted in your health record.

3. Know Your Family History Details
If you're discussing a new symptom, knowing if your immediate family (parents, siblings) have had conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or certain cancers can be crucial. This information helps your GP accurately assess your risk and decide on the best screening tests for you.

4. Don't Leave Out the 'Awkward Stuff'
Remember, your GP has heard it all! If you're struggling with mental health, bowel issues, or sexual health concerns, these are just as important as a physical injury. Be open and honest. Your doctor needs the full picture to give you the best holistic care.

5. Ask About Follow-Up & Next Steps
Before you leave the consultation room, always confirm what happens next. Ask simple questions like: "Do I need blood tests?" "When should I book the follow-up?" or "Is this new medication covered by the PBS?" Knowing the clear next steps saves you confusion and another phone call later.
