Avoca 173658 bred from Tienne Jordaan/Avoca bloodlines shows strong muscling in the hindquarter and good depth of body. He is 13 months old and weighs 95 kgs, a very productive ram showing excellent growth rate. Currently out to work with some mature ladies.

Closest ram to camera 172094 third generation Avoca ram bred from Tienne Jordaan/Mickey Phillips bloodlines weighing 103 kgs. Second ram in 173096 third generation Avoca ram bred from Bulmar bloodlines weighing 111 kgs. We are very pleased with the strong, masculine head development of these blacks, as well as their natural stance as a result of good shoulder placement. These are two of our sires for our breeding programme this year.

There appears to be some misinformation and confusion circulating about the measurement and importance of Eye Muscle scanning.

At Avoca, we strongly believe in the importance of eye muscle depth and area, as it is a heritable trait which research has shown to be a definite indicator for total meat yield.

For this reason, eye muscle depth has been a necessary attribute for us when we have chosen our Sires.

Scanning is a uniform practice, using an ultrasound between the 12th and the 13th rib. This is the procedure used for quality assurance practices, including Lamb Plan. Practitioners do not vary this technique, so any claim to the contrary is incorrect.

In past Wentworth Dorper and White Dorper Annual Sales, our rams have regularly scanned well into the late 40s and early 50s. At the 2017 Wentworth Ram Sale our average eye muscle depth across all of our sale rams was 47.8.

If people choose Rams with poor scanning results this will impact significantly on their meat production over time.

Therefore we consider this an important attribute to pass on to the purchasers of our rams. It is now a fixed heritable trait in our stock.

We have available for your selection 30 Dorper rams. Due to dry conditions, we are not holding our usual Wentworth Ram Sale and have therefore culled heavily. The sires used have been Avoca bred, selected to suit their environment.

Dell 150703 weighed in at 105 kilos with an EMD of 52. A very correct ram with an ideal shoulder setting. He has produced very well for us.
