SEEING THE CHILD BEHIND THE BEHAVIOUR
Chris Moore said it best - "Every child’s brilliance shines differently; our job is to help them find the light, not dim it to fit the room."
At Therapy Matters, we believe that when we take the time to understand the child behind the behaviour, everything shifts.
Neurodivergent children (e.g. autistic children, children with ADHD, learning difficultes or speech and language difficulties) experience the world in a way that can be fast-paced, creative, honest and full of energy. Alongside their strengths, there can also be challenges with attention, regulation, following routines and understanding others. Many neurodivergent children have other differences such as anxiety, dyslexia or sensory sensitivities, creating what is called a spiky profile — remarkable abilities in some areas and extra support needed in others.
This can mean that a child who is imaginative and insightful may also find it difficult to listen, concentrate, manage frustration or stay calm in busy environments. What can look like misbehaviour or inattention is often a brain working hard to stay balanced and understood.
When we look deeper, we see the effort behind the behaviour. By recognising a child’s strengths as well as their struggles, and by adjusting how we support and teach, we can help them build confidence, connection and joy in learning.
This week, let’s celebrate every child’s unique spark and commit to creating spaces where their light can shine brightly.
