Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union

Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nurses
Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Nurses and midwives continue to work together and pool their combined resources and knowledge to protect and further the common interests of all members. Find out more at www.qnmu.org.au

The QNMU encourages and supports online dialogue on our social media forums, and we encourage members and users to be familiar with our social media terms of use at www.qnmu.org.au/SocialMediaTOU

With the end of the year in sight, we wanted to take a moment to pause, reflect on the year that was and unwrap a few of the fantastic highlights we’ve achieved together 🌟

2025 has been a big year for nurses, midwives and carers across Queensland - a year of 🙋‍♀️ standing up, 🗣️ speaking out and 🫶 making a difference in workplaces, at the bargaining table, and in our community.

From historic industrial action and hard-fought wage improvements to safer workplaces, stronger professional recognition and real legislative changes, these outcomes were made possible by the collective strength of QNMU members 💪

Not every win looks the same, and not every outcome followed the same path, but each one reflects the power of staying organised, informed and united, and is testament to the commitment, courage and care you bring to your profession every day 💯

We’re proud to stand alongside you and look forward to continuing the work together in 2026.

From flying out over some of Australia’s most pristine waterways to conduct clinics, to navigating rising flood waters, critical neonatal care and complex transfer arrangements, Queensland’s remote midwives are proud of their extraordinary workplaces and the important role they play in their diverse and distant communities.

We spoke to three QNMU members about the challenges and rewards of delivering care across remote Queensland.

Regis Whitfield (Cairns) members have been paid in full for all their previously unpaid mandatory training – and their action is driving change for thousands of Regis staff nationwide.

Led by Delegate Di Power, around 60 members stood together, refused to do more unpaid training, and demanded payment. Their strength helped push the national issue all the way to the Fair Work Commission.

Now Regis has committed to reviewing unpaid training across all 74 facilities nationally, with payments due by the end of December.

This is what member power looks like. Together, we win. 💪
