Cortisol and The Hippocampus

Everything we read, everything we learn, how we experience the world and how we store the memories of these experiences depends upon the hippocampus operating correctly. This continual demand of memory retention requires huge amounts of neural activity. The process of neurogenesis – the production of neurons and the laying down of these connections – occurs right in the hippocampus.

The hippocampus is also extremely vulnerable to the effects of cortisol from increased stress in the body. When we are under large amounts of stress the ability to create new neurons is decreased and our retention of information also decreases because we are now focused on our emotional response to the world instead.
One of the best ways to help to grow the hippocampus is to walk daily. As we age and move our bodies less, our hippocampus also shrinks. This contributes to memory loss and our inability to learn easily. The other thing to help our hippocampus is to reduce stress or at least how we respond to stress in our lives. Using meditation or other relaxation modalities can be hugely beneficial.

Kinesiology is one of the best modalities for balancing stress in the Hippocampus. Through Functional Kinesiology and other advanced Kinesiology techniques, we have the ability to explore neural pathways in the brain where we can help to balance cortisol in areas that may be impacted by daily stress.

As a Kinesiologist, I work a lot with the Amygdala. The Amygdala is in the Limbic system and is responsible for how we perceive and respond to threats in our environment. Its main function is to regulate our emotions, such as fear, anger and sadness but it’s also responsible for giving meaning to our memories, reward processing and decision making.

When the Amygdala is activated by perceived stress, it will send messages to other parts of the body to prepare it to run or fight. In situations of excessive stress, the frontal lobe will step in to ensure we respond in a reasonable manner. If the stressful situation causes strong feelings like fear, anxiety or aggression, this can result in illogical or overreactive behaviours. This will lead to a type of high jacking where the Amygdala overrides the frontal lobe.

In Kinesiology balancing the Amygdala is one of the many ways I can help people to feel less reactive in stressful situations. Using muscle testing I use a combination of meridian and acupressure stimulation, emotional stress release techniques, neurolymphatic and neurovascular stimulation, sound therapy, chakra balancing, aura alignment and flower essences to bring the body systems bank into homeostasis.

Did you know in Iridology, we can see a person’s predispositions for illness? These are also what we call nurture points. For example, someone with blue eyes would be considered as having Lymphatic eyes. Blue eyes have tendencies toward childhood ear, nose and throat complaints and seasonal or food allergies. They are more likely to have overactive lymphatic systems, often with symptoms of swollen glands. Commonly you’ll see upper respiratory weakness such as asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis. Hyperacidity resulting in arthritis and rheumatics can present in the older blue-eyed population. These conditions are more likely to present in people who had parents with these conditions and also if their diet and lifestyle are conducive to increased loads of acid production in the body.

The other very cool thing about Iridology is, by looking at the markings in the eyes we can describe a person’s emotional characteristics. This can help us to see how people choose the lifestyles that they do. This can also help us as coaches see where someone might need more support in life.

An example of this is seen in the two irises below. In the first Iris photo there is a very constricted collarette around the pupil which indicates someone that tends to be more introverted and prone to self-sabotage. They like to be in control but are great people to share your secrets with as they value discretion.

The second iris has a squared collarette. From this picture we know that this person has tendencies toward perfectionism. They can have strong insecurities about how they fit in to their family or circle of close friends. These people thrive on verbal assurances of love.

All the different markings in the eyes tell a story about that person and their history, approximately 3 generations back. This can help us guide a person to make the right lifestyle changes to help them live more optimally.

As a Tolman Health Coach, the 7 principles of health are at the core of everything we teach. We believe that health and healing happens by creating change in these areas of our lives.
Sometimes we can affect healing simply by drinking more water and getting more healthy sunshine. The flow on effect is that you feel less pain, more energy and healthier looking skin. These are a signs of healing and that you are on the right path.
Other times it requires more dedication to our health and to making lifestyle changes.
Either way the body wants to thrive and given the right conditions it can and will.

I have been reading this very interesting book written by Shanna Swan, about “the ways in which chemicals in the modern environment are changing and endangering human sexuality and fertility.” It goes on to describe their research into 185 studies involving 45,000 healthy men in western countries and the decline of s***m levels by more than 50 percent over the past 4 decades. There is some incredible and shocking data in this book but not something I’m unfamiliar with.

If there is one subject that is common in women, its hormonal issues. As a coach, one of the first pieces of advice I give women is to get rid of the plastics in their lives. They contain Endocrine Disruptors (ED’s) which contribute to hormone imbalances, infertility, diabetes, genome damage and cancers (Fucic et al., 2018). This applies to children as well. Even a fetus is vulnerable when the mother is exposed to these chemicals, contributing to cancers and possible neurological damage (Soto et al., 2007).

So, one simple thing we can do is drastically reduce plastics in our lives. Drink out of glass bottles instead of plastic. Buy fresh produce in its original state, not in packaging. There are some great reusable fabric bags for this purpose. Replace your plastic Tupperware for glass. It might seem like a big thing, initially, to take these steps but in the long run it’s much easier than needing to reverse chronic disease.

We are currently living through some interesting times in the world and as a result, in clinic, we are seeing many people experiencing adrenal fatigue. Sometimes it can be hard to identify that we are experiencing this level of stress because over time we have adjusted to this new normal. It can be difficult to remember what it felt like to have an abundance of energy and less reactive in stressful situations. This is our bodies way of adapting to our environment and it’s doing the best it can with what its given. Once we are at that level of stress though it can start to have detrimental effects on our physiology. Our cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive and even our immune systems are all impacted when we succumb to increased levels of stress.

Sometimes it can be tricky to know what to do to help ourselves when there seems to be no wriggle room in our lives and we need to keep chugging along. Small changes can really start to make a difference in our health. Things like simple breathing techniques, such as 7 rounds of 7, can really help down regulate our parasympathetic nervous system. Even drinking enough water will impact how these systems operate. My tip to getting adequate amounts of water each day would be to fill up a 1 litre bottle of water before going to bed. First thing in the morning get that litre down. Our brains need 1 whole litre to itself, so that will set you up for your work day. Once you have drunk that first litre, it’s not as hard to get the next 1 or 2 litres down.

If you are experiencing adrenal fatigue, there are changes in diet and lifestyle that will definitely help. There is also Kinesiology to help balance your hormone production. In clinic we have helped many people shift from 3rd stage stress back to feeling empowered and free from fatigue. Its worth looking in to if you’re experiencing adrenal stress.
