The New Year is a great time to check in on your asthma management and make sure you or your loved ones are set up for a healthy start to 2026. 💙

📋 Your New Year Asthma Checklist

• Make sure your asthma emergency kit is fully stocked

• Check the expiry date on your reliever inhaler

• Review your inhaler and spacer technique with your healthcare team so your medicine can reach your lungs effectively

• Wash your spacer with warm water and dishwashing detergent, and let it air-dry with the bubbles on

• Replace your spacer if you’ve had the same one since last year

• Update your written Asthma Action Plan with your GP — especially if you noticed new symptoms or triggers over summer

• Try keeping a symptom diary to track symptoms and reliever use before your next appointment

Bushfires can ignite quickly and without warning in Western Australia.

Bushfire smoke can affect anyone, but it is especially risky for people with respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma.

With fire risk rising from early summer, now is the time to prepare so that you know what to do if smoke reaches your area.

Birak (First Summer) is here! ☀️

Longer, warmer days can mean more time outdoors. Whether you’re heading to the beach, enjoying a picnic, or spending time at the park, a little preparation can make a big difference if you or a loved one has asthma or COPD.

Here are some simple ways to stay well this season:

• Hydrate regularly – Water helps keep mucus thin and airways clear. Drink fluids even before you feel thirsty.

• Store medications away from heat – Avoid leaving your reliever in the car or on sunny windowsills.

• Keep your home cool – Close windows early in the morning to trap cooler air inside.

• Plan your outdoor activities – Heat is strongest around midday and 3–4 PM. Consider swapping a lunchtime run for morning yoga, or enjoy a late afternoon walk by the ocean once it’s cooler.

• Check air quality and pollen forecasts – Knowing what’s in the air can help you plan your week, whether it’s packing a mask or changing your transport method.

• Shower after being outdoors – This helps remove pollen that may have collected on your skin or clothes during the day.

Need personalised support? Reach out to our team – we’re here to help you and your loved ones manage your respiratory condition with confidence.

Perth is heading into a severe heatwave over the next few days, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting:

☀️ 35° on Friday
☀️ 37° on Saturday
☀️ 39° on Sunday
☀️ 38° on Monday
☀️ 32° on Tuesday

Hot weather can worsen asthma symptoms, so take extra care. Stay alert for any wheezing, coughing or chest tightness and keep your reliever close at hand.

Stay hydrated, keep cool and plan your day around the hottest periods.

If you or someone you know starts to feel unwell, seek help and follow your Asthma Action Plan.

Take care and stay safe.

For parents, nothing is more difficult than seeing their child struggle to breathe.

Joe’s mum Tammie remembers the early years clearly, filled with sleepless nights as Joe woke often, coughing and wheezing.

Everything changed when their family connected with Respiratory Care WA.

With a diagnostic lung function test, guidance they could trust, and a treatment plan tailored for Joe, they received the support he needed to thrive.

Today, Joe is back to doing what he loves, and Tammie has the confidence and knowledge to support him.

This Christmas, you can help more WA families get the early diagnosis and care they need.

🎁 Please Give Little Lungs a Chance.

💙 Last week, we joined Floreat Park Primary School for their Do Blue. Do You fundraise and awareness day!

Thanks to the amazing student council, the school raised $586 to help WA kids with asthma run, play, and live their best lives.

Students rocked blue and dressed as their sporting heroes, while our CEO Rael Rivers spoke at assembly and answered lots of curious questions from the audience.

Two Year 2 students, Stella and Eliana, even went home and had a bake sale to fundraise for Respiratory Care WA. The next day, they brought back $35 to donate!

A huge shoutout to Tyler for sharing his asthma story 💪 and to Puff the Dragon for winning high fives all around! 🐉✋

Thank you to everyone at Floreat Park Primary for making the day so fun and meaningful! 🎉

Our Story

Asthma WA has the mission to educate and empower West Australians to take control of their respiratory health. Currently, on average 1 person dies from asthma every fortnight in WA. We want this to be zero. We have asthma educators on hand 8.30am - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday, to answer any queries about managing yours or your child’s asthma, in person or over the phone. Call our FREE hotline today on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462). In an emergency though, always dial 000 for an ambulance.
