With Western Australia currently experiencing one of its worst hay fever seasons, it’s great to see the Perth Pollen Count and Forecast app now up and running 👏

This automated pollen counter provides daily, real-time forecasts to help people living with asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions better manage their health.

Well done to the team at AirHealth and Edith Cowan University (ECU) for their fantastic work on this initiative. Respiratory Care WA is proud to be part of this collaboration.

Feeling short of breath after exercise is normal — but if you or someone you love with COPD becomes breathless doing everyday tasks like getting dressed or hanging the washing, it’s time to speak with your health professional.

Early support can make a real difference. They can adjust your treatment, check your inhaler technique, or refer you to a pulmonary rehab program to help you breathe easier and live well.

When breathless, remember the three P’s:
🧘‍♀️ Pause – stop and rest
💺 Position – lean forward, drop your shoulders
💨 Purse your lips – ‘smell the roses, blow out the candles’

If symptoms worsen, follow your COPD Action Plan or call 000 in an emergency.

Have you seen the story about our new clinic for children under six in The West Australian ?💙

A huge thank you to little Greyson and his mum, Kirah, for sharing their story and helping raise awareness of our services and children’s respiratory health, and to Dr James Gibbons, who leads these clinics and supports families with their little ones’ breathing concerns.

If your child or someone you know could benefit from this service, please talk to your GP about a referral to Respiratory Care WA.

🧡 World COPD Day is on the 19 November.

Around 63,000 Australians (1 in 20 aged 45+) live with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)—a serious but often underdiagnosed condition.

Symptoms like breathlessness, chronic cough, or frequent chest infections are often mistaken for ageing, delaying diagnosis.

This World COPD Day, the message is clear:
“Short of Breath, Think COPD.”

Early diagnosis can help people stay active, healthy, and independent.

Bingo night for a good cause! 🎱💙

Equipped with dot markers, bingo books and plenty of snacks, our team, joined by Respiratory Care WA alum and bingo-loving legend Sarah McKenna, had an amazing time at Cannington Bingo last night.

A huge thank you to Sue and the team at Mal Atwell Billiards and Bingo, who host Perth’s biggest bingo nights every Monday and Friday.

They’ve supported Respiratory Care WA for many years, donating thousands of dollars to help us provide free services across WA. These funds make a real difference for people living with asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who makes nights like this possible! 💙

🌟 What an incredible weekend at the 2025 Telethon7 Perth Family Festival! 🌟

Our team loved meeting so many families, chatting about asthma, and sharing how Telethon’s support helps WA kids breathe easier. The kids had a blast spinning the prize wheel, learning about asthma and of course, high fiving (or hugging!) Puff the Mascot. 🐉✨

“Without the amazing support from Telethon and the WA community, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the care and education our patients and their families need. Through our Children’s Respiratory Hub, we provide paediatric lung function testing, nurse support and specialist consultations – all fully bulk billed. Every day, we help children with asthma live their best lives.” - Jess, Clinical Lead, Children's Services at Respiratory Care WA.

A huge thank you to Telethon, our amazing volunteers, and everyone who joined in. This year’s theme, , said it all — WA coming together to raise a record-breaking total of $90,160,275 for sick and vulnerable children. ❤️

Binar in Broome! 🏀🌴

This week, Alannah and Mel travelled north to join the Binar Futures Basketball Tournament and Health Embassy at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

Over two incredible days, they yarned with more than 300 First Nations children and their families about asthma, common triggers and how to support themselves and others to breathe easier, before and after they hit the court.

The meds board was a crowd favourite — helping kids learn about preventers and relievers.

Encouragingly, around 80% of participants could identify the blue inhaler used in asthma first aid.

Most also recognised smoking, dust, viruses and exercise as possible triggers — a notable increase from our 2024 visit.

A huge thank you to Binar for bringing together sport, health and culture in such a powerful way — and to everyone who stopped by for a chat! 🧡

Great news for WA families!

The WA Government has announced 130,000 doses of a needle-free (nasal spray) flu vaccine for children aged 2–12, available from mid-2026. 💙

After one of the toughest flu seasons on record in WA, this is a big step forward to help protect kids, especially as the flu and other viruses are common triggers for asthma flare-ups.

So far this year, there have been more than 17,000 emergency visits and over 1,300 hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses in children.

The FluMist nasal spray is a safe and effective, needle-free way to protect children against the flu — making vaccination a little easier for families.

We welcome this initiative and look forward to seeing more WA children protected from the flu.

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 🤝💙

When people hear ‘palliative care’, they often think only of end-of-life. But in reality, it’s about much more — improving quality of life, staying connected, and making empowered choices.

Our Respiratory Nurse Educator, Jacqueline Rapaic, is helping change the conversation around palliative care in respiratory health.

“Palliative care isn’t just for the final stages of illness. In respiratory care, it’s about improving quality of life at every stage — physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially.” – Jacqueline.
