Thousands of WA kids are back at school! After one of our hottest summers on record, we’re urging parents and schools to be asthma-ready.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting Australian children, and school can expose them to triggers such as:

🏃‍♀️ Exercise
🌦 Weather changes
🤧 Colds and flu
🧹 Dust
😰 Stress or excitement

Parents and teachers, here’s what to do:
- Check asthma action plans
- Keep medications close and
- Help create safer environments for students with asthma.

Thank you to The West Australian for highlighting this. Grab your copy today or read the full article online (digital subscription needed).

Australians spend 90% of their time indoors 🏠, yet indoor air quality is often overlooked — even though it impacts our health and wellbeing.

Poor indoor air can trigger symptoms immediately or may cause serious health issues.

Small, simple changes at home, work, and in the car can make a big difference.

Today we were treated to a gorgeous rosewater and meringue cake, generously gifted by Harrison (Year 5) and his amazing mum who popped in for a lung function test and consultation 💙

Harrison shared he’s loving being back at school and having a great time with our team. Hearing that made our day!

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do… and that sometimes, hero work comes with sprinkles on top 😉✨

From all of us at Respiratory Care WA, a huge thank you to Morley Out of School Care for hosting a Do Blue. Do You day and fundraising for us 💙

Their day included dressing up in blue, colouring in pictures of Puff the Dragon and learning more about asthma.

We’re so grateful they raised around $130 to help Western Australian kids breathe easier. Every dollar truly makes a difference.

Meet Luna 🐶

Wellness dog. Cavoodle. Asthma education assistant (unofficial, but enthusiastic) at Sacred Heart Primary School - Thornlie.

Last week, Luna joined teachers for an asthma education session, learning:

- What asthma is and how it affects the lungs and airways (pictured with Luna, one inflamed airway and one healthy airway)
- How to support students to manage their asthma
- What to do in an asthma emergency

The highlight? When our Respiratory Educator, Melanie, asked what a cough can sound like, Luna answered with a perfectly timed bark!

“Yes, Luna,” Melanie laughed, “some people say it can sound just like a dog or even a seal!” 🐾

Thank you to the staff at Sacred Heart Primary School for inviting us along.

Asthma affects more students than you might think.

Around 1 in 10 boys and 1 in 16 girls under 15 in Australia have asthma. That could be a child in every classroom.

In our latest insight, Colleen, a WA teacher living with asthma, shares how understanding early flare-up warning signs, and having the right training from Respiratory Care WA helped her school respond earlier, calmer, and with confidence.

Whether you’re a teacher or a parent, being asthma-aware can make a real difference to a child’s safety at school.

👉 Start the conversation before the first bell rings and tell a school about our free training workshops.

Because prepared adults help students breathe easier 💙

Families in the Great Southern recently had the chance to access specialist children’s respiratory care close to home through our first pop-up children’s clinic in Albany.

Supported by Telethon7 Perth, the clinic offered free lung function testing, education, and consultations with a paediatric respiratory and sleep specialist, plus support from a nurse and respiratory scientist.

Little three-year-old Max and other local children could get care without long travel.

With asthma rates higher in the region, early checks and ongoing support make a real difference to children’s health and wellbeing.

Two more children’s clinics are planned in Albany later this year.

Families can speak with their GP to arrange a referral. All appointments are fully bulk billed.

February is one of the peak months for children's asthma hospital admissions in Australia, with around 20-25% of cases occurring when kids return to school.

Why does this happen? Well, when students head back to the classroom, several changes can trigger symptoms, including:

• New environments and shared classroom spaces
• Dust and other indoor allergens
• Cold and flu viruses from classmates
• Stress or excitement about returning to school
• Changes in routine over the holidays that have affected preventer use

What can parents do?

Book an appointment with your GP for an asthma check-up.

You can also ask for a referral to Respiratory Care WA’s Children’s Respiratory Hub, where families can access bulk-billed lung function testing, personalised information and practical support, such as how to correctly use an inhaler and spacer.

At home, make sure your child takes their preventer as prescribed, and encourage them to let you know if they are using their blue reliever more often than usual.

In an emergency, always call 000 for an ambulance.
