WIMR Supports the Full Release of the MRFF

The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) was created to support life-saving medical research—from cancer breakthroughs to advances in mental health care.

Today, only half of its potential funding is being released. This limits programs, slows discoveries, and leads researchers to leave.

Australian researchers are among the most productive and cost-efficient in the world, yet their ability to improve health outcomes is held back by funds that already exist.

WIMR supports AAMRI’s call to release the full MRFF and ensure Australia’s research sector can continue to thrive and deliver discoveries that save lives.

WIMR supports the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) campaign to release the full Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

The MRFF was established to provide $1 billion annually to support Australian medical research. Currently, only $650 million is being released, limiting programs, prompting researchers to leave, and slowing critical discoveries.

Australian researchers are among the most productive and cost-efficient globally, yet their ability to advance health outcomes is constrained by funding that already exists.
We call for the full MRFF to be released to secure the future of Australian medical research.

Mental health is more than science; it’s community.

At WIMR, Dr Carla Haroutonian's research in sleep and early life adversity aims to transform how we prevent and treat conditions like depression, trauma and schizophrenia. Her impact goes beyond the lab, showing that connection is just as vital as discovery.

This World Mental Health Day, we celebrate both.

We were delighted to host an NRL legend at WIMR this week! Roosters superstar player Anthony Minichiello was part of the team from 2000-2014, becoming a Roosters Hall of Fame Inductee in 2023, representing Australia in 19 matches and 11 State of Origin matches.

Anthony, or Mini, as he is affectionately known, has been dedicating his post Roosters career to improving the health and wellbeing of youth through his minifit programs and focusing on the importance of nutrition. Anthony was interested to learn more about WIMR’s Brain Dynamic Centre and the research being conducted by Dr Isabella Breukelaar into youth mental health and brain mapping.

Thanks for visiting to lend your support Mini!

Thank you for your time, Ms Davis, and for your support of the world-class research and innovation.

Women's Health Week (1-5 September) is a good opportunity to reflect on the incredible work women are doing in healthcare to help us now and into the future.

These amazing women all work alongside Prof John Iredell at PHAGE International at the The Westmead Institute for Medical Research where ground-breaking work is being done to tackle the global rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through bacteriophage research and application.

Their research is reaching new frontiers in the battle to save lives as bacterias become more and more resistant to antibiotics.
