For many families, Christmas is a time filled with laughter, twinkling lights and joyful memories. But for some, the season looks a little different. For three-year-old Abigail and her family, Christmas has always carried an extra layer of meaning, a reminder of just how precious life can be.

Abigail was born via an emergency caesarean after doctors noticed she had stopped growing. She spent her first three weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), before making it home just in time for Christmas. Her parents, Adrienne and Aaron, hoped their hospital days were behind them. But just a few weeks later, everything changed.

Abigail became critically ill and was urgently transferred by the Newborn & paediatric Emergency Transport Service - NETS NSW to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. There, she was diagnosed with hypopituitarism – a rare, genetic, lifelong condition where the body doesn’t produce enough of the critical hormones needed for growth, metabolism and overall health.

Today, Abigail is thriving. Her journey has been shaped by expert care, groundbreaking research, and the strength and support of those around her.

This Christmas, your support can give children like Abigail across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network the chance to grow up and spend future Christmases where they belong, surrounded by family, laughter and love.

We are proud to share that Professor Nadia Badawi AM has been named as a NSW nominee for the 2026 Australian of the Year Awards.

A Neonatologist, Medical Director and Co-Head of The Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care (NICU) at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, and Chair of Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Nadia has dedicated her career to improving outcomes for vulnerable babies and their families — transforming newborn care in Australia and around the world.

This incredible recognition reflects not only Nadia’s leadership, but the strength of an entire community of researchers, clinicians, nurses, families, government partners, and our generous donor community — all united in the shared goal of giving every baby the best possible start to life.

Thanks to this collaboration, survival rates in The Grace Centre have risen to over 97%, while disability among babies leaving the unit has reduced by more than 40%. The Grace Centre is also implementing early detection and intervention to help support babies and their families.

These outcomes are among the best in the world — and behind each statistic are lives saved, futures changed, and families given hope.

We are honoured to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and extend our warmest congratulations to Professor Nadia Badawi, and invite you to watch the 2026 Australian of the Year Awards on 10 November from 6pm (AEDT) at https://brnw.ch/21wX96a.

On World Stroke Day, we reflect on the strength and resilience of children like Jasmine, whose lives have been changed by stroke, and the incredible journeys of recovery that follow.

When Jasmine was six years old, she was transferred from her local hospital for critical care at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick after her appendix burst and she developed sepsis. Not long after, she experienced two strokes that changed her life. An MRI revealed she had sustained an acquired brain injury, and Jasmine began months of rehabilitation under specialist care, where swimming became a key part of her therapy.

What began as hydrotherapy soon became her passion. Jasmine earned her para-swimming classification and today is one of Australia’s most accomplished para-athletes, winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics and her first international gold at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Jasmine’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when world-class care meets the determination of a child.

Sydney Swans AFLW players Lara Hausegger, Amelia Martin and Sarah Steele Park recently visited the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, to meet patients and families and bring cheer to the wards.

In between training sessions, the group took time to chat to kids, pose for photos and gift merchandise – creating special moments of joy and connection for children in a time when they need it most.

The players were deeply moved by the strength and resilience of the kids, taking inspiration from their courage with them onto the field.

A huge thank you to the team for joining us and helping to bring smiles to so many faces.

We’re proud to partner with The Kids' Cancer Project to bring a special pop-up exhibition to the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. The exhibition features framed prints of book covers created through the Write a Book in a Day program — stories imagined, written and illustrated by children.

Located in the atrium above the Plume Cafe, this free display is open to patients, families and staff passing through the hospital. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the creativity and resilience of young storytellers who are helping to make a difference for children with cancer.

The Write a Book in a Day initiative not only raises vital funds for childhood cancer research but also gives young people the chance to come together, use their imagination, and create something truly meaningful.

The exhibition will be open until mid-November.

Thank you to The Kids' Cancer Project and their supporters for making this exhibition possible. Together, we are changing the future for sick kids.
