One of the largest and most trusted kids’ health charities in the country, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation exists to help provide all children with access to the best possible healthcare, whenever and wherever they need it. We have been delivering on this promise since 1986, raising millions every year for Sydney Children's Hospitals Network - including Sydney's two children’s hospitals at Randwick and Westmead, specialised care services, and cutting edge paediatric research, operating across NSW. A conduit, an enabler, and a mechanism for powerful change, we make sure funds raised go directly to the front line of children’s healthcare – from the hospital wards to the treatment rooms, the research labs to the outreach programs.

As children and young people move through hospital, from waiting rooms to wards, corridors to clinics, they are also journeying through life in deeply personal and emotional ways. Every young person’s hospital experience is unique, yet it is also something quietly shared.

As part of the redevelopment’s broader Arts, Play and Discovery initiative, the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) Art Program was invited to deliver a patient-led artwork for the lifts. SCHF artist educators consulted with children and young people in hospital, and their feedback shaped the creative direction, highlighting a preference for bright colours, text and an element of gamification.

This inspired a collaboration with Sydney-based artist Nadia Odlum, who worked alongside patients across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick and The Children's Hospital at Westmead to explore playful ways to move through space. In workshops, children and their families wrote down different ways of moving. These words were then shuffled and combined into surprising and delightful pairings such as 'floating-flop' and 'dancing-somersault'.

The result is a vibrant interactive artwork transforming an everyday lift ride into a space of creativity, imagination and play.

A major milestone has been reached at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW), with the completion of construction on a new 14-storey building – set to welcome patients in the coming months. This redevelopment forms part of a broader expansion across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, strengthening world-class paediatric care and enhancing spaces for learning, collaboration and discovery for children and families.

Through collaboration between philanthropy and government, significant investment and meaningful progress in paediatric healthcare is possible. Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation is proud to support this transformative project and recognises the generosity of our donor community, whose philanthropic support has been instrumental in bringing this redevelopment to life.

At CHW, the completion of construction marks a significant step forward in the expansion of critical care and acute healthcare services. The new state-of-the-art building brings together expanded cancer services, perioperative and surgical care, complex and acute medical inpatient services and a state-wide burns service, alongside single patient rooms designed to support family togetherness, a surgical short stay unit, and a larger pharmacy and oncology pharmacy.

Pictured here is a glimpse of the incredible new building at CHW. We are deeply grateful to our donors for their generosity and ongoing commitment to this redevelopment, and for standing alongside us to change the future for sick kids.

As we approach International Childhood Cancer Day, we are reminded of the impact childhood cancer has on children and families.

Flynn was just a baby when he was diagnosed with infantile fibrosarcoma, a rare but highly treatable cancer. After presenting unwell at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, tests revealed a tumour the size of a tennis ball was pressing on his kidney.

With access to specialist care and a targeted treatment, Flynn was able to take a medicine at home instead of undergoing surgery or chemotherapy. Within six weeks, his tumour reduced by more than 90 per cent. Today, Flynn is 17 months old and in remission.

Now, Flynn’s parents, Marina and Tom, are taking part in Walk for Kids with Cancer to give back and support childhood cancer research and care across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. By joining Flynn’s family on the walk, you are helping support better outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer today, and into the future.

For paediatric dietitian Sheridan Collins, food in hospital is more than meeting nutritional needs. It is about comfort, choice and creating moments of joy for children when they need it most.

Thanks to the generous support of Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) donors, Sheridan is helping transform the hospital mealtime experience through her nutrition support dietitian role across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. By consulting with hundreds of families and staff, and working closely with HealthShare NSW and Network dietitians, she has helped design menus that balance comforting, familiar favourites with fresh, nourishing options children actually want to eat.

These changes support children with a wide range of needs, with more than 80 therapeutic diets built into the system, age-appropriate textures to help develop feeding skills, and meals that can be ordered closer to the time they are prepared. Small touches, such as serving meals on real crockery with child-sized cutlery, also help to make hospital feel more like home during long stays.

Reflecting on the impact of these changes, Sheridan shares, "I want children in hospital to really look forward to mealtimes as a highlight of their day."

This story is one example of what is made possible through the generosity of SCHF donors. Read more on the blog and explore the FY25 Impact Report: https://brnw.ch/21wZLSZ

On Saturday, we came together with Taronga Zoo Sydney and Emma Watkins (Emma Memma) for Twilight at Taronga to create a special and uplifting experience for children and families, including some of our very own Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation patient families.

As part of the Twilight at Taronga Summer Concert Series, families gathered on picnic rugs in Taronga’s beautiful natural amphitheatre to enjoy a joyful performance by Emma Memma and her co-performer Elvin Melvin.

For patient families, the morning was about joy, fun and connection. Children sang, danced and joined in throughout the performance, while families spent time together, sharing laughter and enjoying being patient of something special.

After the performance, some of our patient families had the opportunity to meet Emma Memma. Her kindness and gentle energy shone through, with plenty of smiles, cuddles and moments that made everyone feel truly special.

We are grateful to Taronga Zoo Sydney, Twilight at Taronga and Emma Memma for creating a day filled with care, inclusion and togetherness – one that will stay with families long after the music ended.

Across Australia, around 1,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every year, and heartbreakingly, three lives are lost every week — the equivalent of a classroom of children lost every school term, every year.

Across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN), oncology services at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick are giving children the best possible chance to survive, heal and thrive. World-leading teams are working around the clock to treat childhood cancer and support children and their families through every step of the journey — from lifesaving care to groundbreaking research and pioneering new therapies.

Through SCHF, donor support helps make this possible — funding specialised equipment, life-changing research, outreach services, and programs that support children and families through their most difficult moments.

On World Cancer Day, we invite you to learn more about how paediatric oncology services across SCHN are transforming cancer care — and how your support is changing the future for children with cancer.
