RODENTICIDES.....

With the mouse plague in western NSW continuing the Poisons Centre has been receiving lots of calls about accidental exposures to mouse and rat poisons.
Many rodenticide blocks or pellets contain a bittering agent to discourage accidental ingestion by children.
ALWAYS call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice following any accidental exposures. Where possible obtain the brand name of the product as the ingredients and toxicity varies.
Try to keep rodenticide blocks and pellets out of reach and out of sight of children to reduce the risk of accidental exposures.
Discuss with your children the importance of not touching the rodent baits.
Only ever use rodenticides approved for use in domestic settings inside your home.
The Poisons Centre is available 24/7 on 131126 to answer any queries on human exposures.
Rodenticide are also very toxic to pets if ingested - contact your vet or the Animal Poisons Centre on 1300 TOX PET / 1300 869 738 for further advice.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT (Updated at 11am, 3 August)
Hunter New England Local Health District is urging anyone who visited the following venues to strictly isolate at home for 14 days from the date below and be on the lookout for COVID-19 symptoms. Get tested regardless of symptoms, but you must remain in isolation for the full 14 days even if your initial test is negative. If you do develop COVID-19 symptoms, you should be retested.

- Hotel Jesmond on 29 July between 7pm and 9pm
- Wallsend Diggers on 29 AND 30 July between 9pm and 11pm
- Lambton Park Hotel on 30 July between 8pm until 9pm.

This follows confirmation of a confirmed Sydney case who visited Newcastle on 29 and 30 July while infectious.

Hunter New England Health is in contact with the management of the three venues to identify patrons who attended at these times. The venues will be deep cleaned overnight with extra attention to touch points.

Hunter New England Health is still working to contact those who attended the venues at these times and they should be on the lookout for symptoms.

If you were at these locations during these times, you may be at risk of infection and you must strictly isolate at home for 14 days from those dates and be tested for COVID-19. This action is vital to limit the spread of the virus.

We urge everyone to follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine, and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing, coughing or sneezing into their elbow, and regularly washing their hands.

Those wishing to be tested can organise a swab via their GP or by attending their nearest COVID-19 clinic.

The drive through clinic at the University of Newcastle continues to operate 8am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday for those who need testing. Call 4964 7497 to arrange an appointment, prior to attending.

Testing is also available through 4Cyte Pathology’s COVID-19 clinic at Central Church Warners Bay (290 Hillsborough Rd). The clinic operates between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday and 8am to 11am Saturdays, and no booking is required. More information can be found on their website at www.medtechservices.net.au

BEEN RAINING? LOOK OUT FOR FUNNEL WEB SPIDERS
Funnel web spiders are a big black spider which like to burrow under rocks, around rotting logs and are often living hidden away in gardens.
Heavy rain often washes FWS out of their hiding places so always be on the alert especially when gardening or digging. The funnel web spider in this photo was found recently in my backyard in Sydney!
FWS have a very poisonous and fast-acting venom and quick action can be life-saving.
If anyone is bitten by a big black spider always call 000 immediately.
Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the affected limb and stay still until the ambulance arrives.
Call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice or information.

ACCIDENTAL PARACETAMOL EXPOSURES
27/09/2019

ACCIDENTAL PARACETAMOL EXPOSURES

ACCIDENTAL PARACETAMOL EXPOSURES
NSW PIC receives many calls about accidental exposures to liquid and tablet forms of paracetamol. More than 90% of these calls involve children aged less than 5 years. This year more than 170 children have been referred by NSW PIC to hospital emergency departments for blood tests due to concerns they may have ingested a toxic dose of paracetamol.
Paracetamol is a commonly used medicine and is found in nearly every Australian home. Paracetamol is a very safe medicine when taken as recommended but in overdose it can cause serious toxicity. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and stomach pain may mean that liver damage is already occurring. Prompt treatment before the onset of symptoms is essential to prevent serious and potentially irreversible liver damage.
Keep paracetamol tablets and liquid formulations out of reach and out of sight of children. Always put medicines away after you have used them. Paracetamol liquids often have child-resistant closures but these are NOT child-proof as the number of calls received by PIC indicates.
Common places for children to access medicines include kitchen benches, bedside tables and handbags. These are not safe places to keep your medicines if you have young children living in or visiting your home.
If you suspect your child has ingested paracetamol or been given an incorrect dose call Poisons Information on 131126 for further advice.
