For the past three weeks, UniSA Pharmacy students have been on placement in Whyalla . They've been working to expand their knowledge and skills. Part of their learning experiences has included collaborating with the Podiatry students at the Rural Health Clinic, fostering a sense of teamwork and holistic care. It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of our highly respected colleague, clinical educator, and friend Michael Martin. Michael passed away on the 17th of February, his 63rd birthday, after a 10-month battle with glioblastoma.

Working in a joint appointment role shared between the Whyalla Hospital and the University of South Australia Department of Rural Health (UniSA DRH), Michael initiated and developed the Whyalla campus podiatry clinic. While he had been a member of the UniSA DRH team since 2016, his involvement with the podiatry program stretched back much further, with active engagement in student clinical placement activities since 2006. As a valued clinical educator of undergraduate students and as a mentor of new graduates, Michael was generous in sharing his knowledge and passing on clinical skills. He was a true enthusiast and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our condolences and thoughts are with Michael’s family during this difficult time.

To help celebrate the life of Michael, we have organised a Public Facebook Group called “Memoirs of Michael Martin” where friends, family, clients, current and past students, colleagues, and the community can share stories and photos of Michael. These will be compiled for Michael’s family.
