🦴 Osteoporosis Awareness – Protect Your Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a “silent” condition that weakens bones and increases fracture risk. Early assessment and prevention can make a real difference.

Are you at risk?

🔎 Bone health review is recommended for:
• Women over 50
• Men over 70
• Anyone with a history of minimal-trauma fracture
• People taking long-term corticosteroids
• Those with chronic medical conditions affecting bone strength

📊 Ask about a DEXA scan
A DEXA scan measures bone density and helps determine fracture risk.

🥛 Support Strong Bones
• Adequate calcium intake (diet first where possible)
• Vitamin D optimisation
• Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise

🌞 February is Skin Cancer Awareness Month 🌞

February is one of the highest UV months in NSW — even on cloudy days. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer, but the good news is early detection saves lives.

💛 This month, we encourage everyone to:
✔️ Protect your skin when UV is 3 or above
✔️ Check your skin regularly
✔️ Visit your GP for a skin check, especially if you notice something new or changing

☀️ Be SunSmart every day — remember to:
👕 Slip on protective clothing
🧴 Slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen
👒 Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
🌳 Seek shade
🕶️ Slide on UV-protective sunglasses

🩺 Book a GP skin check if a spot is new, changing, looks different, or doesn’t heal.
Catching skin cancer early can make all the difference.

As we begin the New Year, the team at Windang Family Medical Centre wishes you good health and wellbeing for the year ahead.

We’d also like to remind our patients that shingles is more common as we get older, particularly from age 50. It can cause significant pain and long-lasting nerve complications—but vaccination can greatly reduce your risk- https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/shingles-program.aspx
