πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ’‰ PROTECT YOURSELF THIS FLU SEASON (2026)
FLU IS MORE THAN JUST A BAD COLD. IT CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS ILLNESS, HOSPITALISATION, AND EVEN DEATH!

The good news? Vaccination is your best protection.
πŸ‘‰ NSW Health recommends everyone aged 6 months and over gets a flu vaccine every year.

πŸ›‘οΈ WHY GET VACCINATED?
βœ”οΈ Reduces your risk of getting seriously ill
βœ”οΈ Lowers the chance of hospitalisation
βœ”οΈ Helps protect vulnerable people around you (babies, elderly, pregnant women)
πŸ’‘ The flu vaccine also reduces severity even if you do get sick.

πŸ‘Ά NEW IN 2026 – NEEDLE-FREE OPTION!
πŸŽ‰ A nasal spray flu vaccine is now available for children aged 2–4 years in NSW.
β€’ No needles
β€’ Same protection

🦴 Osteoporosis Awareness – Protect Your Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a β€œsilent” condition that weakens bones and increases fracture risk. Early assessment and prevention can make a real difference.

Are you at risk?

πŸ”Ž Bone health review is recommended for:
β€’ Women over 50
β€’ Men over 70
β€’ Anyone with a history of minimal-trauma fracture
β€’ People taking long-term corticosteroids
β€’ Those with chronic medical conditions affecting bone strength

πŸ“Š Ask about a DEXA scan
A DEXA scan measures bone density and helps determine fracture risk.

πŸ₯› Support Strong Bones
β€’ Adequate calcium intake (diet first where possible)
β€’ Vitamin D optimisation
β€’ Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise
β€’ Falls prevention strategies
For more information: https://aci.health.nsw.gov.au/statewide-programs/lbvc/osteoporotic-refracture-prevention

πŸ’¬ Our team is auditing patients on long-term corticosteroids and reviewing those at higher risk. If you think you may be due for a bone health check, we encourage you to book an appointment.

🌞 February is Skin Cancer Awareness Month 🌞

February is one of the highest UV months in NSW β€” even on cloudy days. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer, but the good news is early detection saves lives.

πŸ’› This month, we encourage everyone to:
βœ”οΈ Protect your skin when UV is 3 or above
βœ”οΈ Check your skin regularly
βœ”οΈ Visit your GP for a skin check, especially if you notice something new or changing

β˜€οΈ Be SunSmart every day β€” remember to:
πŸ‘• Slip on protective clothing
🧴 Slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen
πŸ‘’ Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
🌳 Seek shade
πŸ•ΆοΈ Slide on UV-protective sunglasses

🩺 Book a GP skin check if a spot is new, changing, looks different, or doesn’t heal.
Catching skin cancer early can make all the difference.

❀️ With outdoor celebrations like Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year, it’s the perfect time to love your skin and stay sun safe while enjoying summer.

As we begin the New Year, the team at Windang Family Medical Centre wishes you good health and wellbeing for the year ahead.

We’d also like to remind our patients that shingles is more common as we get older, particularly from age 50. It can cause significant pain and long-lasting nerve complicationsβ€”but vaccination can greatly reduce your risk- https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/shingles-program.aspx

If you are eligible for the shingles vaccine, or would like to know more, please speak with your GP or our nursing team.

Wishing you a healthy year ahead,
WFMC
