As a mental health and intellectual disability nurse I have come across families that are struggling with new behaviors from their children especially in their teens. One of the advise I give families prior to getting a mental health diagnosis is to access positive behavior support plan. Evidence based guidance from specialist doctors who people with ID or ASD is to conduct FBA (Functional behavior analysis) which will inform a positive behavior plan. Once all strategies have proved to fail it becomes a process of elimination . First of all eliminating mood disorders and then to psychotic disorders. So if your child is exhibiting new behaviors that challenge my advise to you is talk to the planner, discuss with your support coordinator and request for behavior support practitioner. Remember that early intervention is better. Most people end up on medication they don't need because people are responding reactively instead of proactively.
