On a recent drive into the outback my husband and I came across the grave of Fred Hollows in Bourke. Despite being born in New Zealand his wishes were to be buried ‘under the Coolabah tree in Bourke . His egalitarian principles drove him to improve and restore the sight of the Aboriginal people in the surrounding area in the 1970’s and his pioneering techniques that he refined and standardised would expand to deliver the same outcomes to the impoverished people of the world for which he is famous
Some months later we found ourselves in the eye clinic at the Prince of Wales hospital where Fred Hollows practised and it was like going back in time as the decor was as if he had walked out yesterday !
The same amazing level of care still very much apparent .
What an incredible legacy that still
Lives on today🌸
