#2 It creates a site for a possible infection to enter the body.

The feet, whether you like it or not, are one of the dirtiest parts of the body no matter how much you wash them. By inserting a needle into the bottom, you are making a hole in the foot, albeit only small, but nether less a hole for an infection to possible creep into.

#1 It hurts……a lot.

If you think about it, the skin on the bottom of the foot is the toughest skin on the body. To get through that tough skin not only do you need a very sharp needle, it needs to be thicker (so the tough skin doesn’t break the needle)

Okay, I’ve have said my piece here 😉

Do you or have you ever suffered with heel pain?

Has the thought of a cortisone injection to treat your heel pain ever crossed your mind?

If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then this important article could make a world of difference to you.

If you rely solely on a cortisone injection to relieve you of your heel pain and not get to the cause of it, not only will it come back but other reasons why it is a bad idea are:

For the record, despite what you hear, heel pain will not go away on its own. It wont! It cant! It will just get worse and worse and you will be doing less and less. Doing nothing is the reason it MAY go away – because you aren’t walking, at all! Just sitting……all…..the…..time!

Do you want to immediately walk heel pain free?

Then shockwave therapy may be the solution you are looking for.

Applying a series of short, high amplitude pulses of energy to the problem area, shockwave therapy works by breaking down fibrous tissue, promoting blood flow and advancing healing in the affected region.

Research suggests that the ultrasonic waves may also reduce the transmission of pain signals from the sensory nerves, helping to lessen the amount of pain you experience at the injury site. Shockwave treatment is specifically designed to target injuries occurring in the Achilles tendons, as well as pain arising from plantar fasciitis.

Through a non-invasive process which introduces a controlled amount of stress to the problem area, shockwave therapy can stimulate and restart your body’s natural development of regenerative tissue to effectively aid the remodelling of tendons.

#5 The right fit

- Your orthotic has been measured and made to fit your foot, your shoe therefore should also fit your foot. Having an orthotic does not mean you need to increase your shoe size to accommodate the device- this will simply mean there’s a greater risk your foot may slip or move within the shoe, rendering the orthotic uncomfortable. Having your feet measured prior to buying shoes assists in finding the perfect fit.

#4 Lacing/Velcro/Buckles

- Something to hold the shoe onto you. Appropriate fixation to the foot provides many benefits such as reducing muscle overuse, reducing risk of tripping on loose shoes and achieving the perfect fit. When wearing your orthoses in shoes appropriate fixation becomes even more important as it ensures your foot remains stable on the orthotic to achieve the best support possible. A loose fitting shoe or a slip on shoe can allow your foot to slip and move on the orthotic, reducing the level of support and comfort.

90% of the population have ‘flat feet’.

Do you think that 90% of the population should be wearing orthotics to be treat their ‘flat feet’?

Do you know what can happen if you wear orthotics if you don’t actually need them?

Rather than allowing normal flow within the body, you are locking up joints and then the joints aren’t being used.

If joints are not being used you are using something else in it’s place which is wasn’t designed for.

#2 A stable base

- The base of the shoe should be firm through the midsole, with some flexibility towards the toes and forefoot. Your shoe should not be able to be twisted as this will not provide a stable platform for the orthotic to sit upon.

#1 A removable insole -

To allow your orthoses and foot to sit comfortably within a shoe the original shoe liner or innersole should be removable. If you can’t remove the innersole there is a risk that your foot will sit too high in the shoe and cause heel slippage, or that your toes will experience rubbing.

If you have ever worn orthotics, been quoted for orthotics, or even considered orthotics, the chances are you have been shocked, surprised, or relieved of pain. Maybe even all the mentioned at once.

Orthotics can range from $100 (for an off the shelf device) all the way to $1000 (for a custom pair of devices) depending where you go and the type you get. I agree, that is a massive difference!

What and why the controversy? Great question.

A little while ago a news article was released stating that fake orthotics are just as beneficial as custom orthotics for the treatment of foot pain. This has created some controversy throughout the podiatry community as to why are practitioners prescribing custom devices if they provide the same outcome as off the shelf devices?

If you want to know when and why we prescribe custom foot orthoses and when and why we prescribe off the shelf devices, then click the link below:

#3 An Enclosed heel counter

- A firm and enclosed heel section provides the ideal support to stabilise your foot within the shoe and on your orthotic. If you can easily bend the heel of your shoe inwards it is time to replace them.

Do you get heel pain when first getting out of bed in the morning?

You know, that tight stabbing pain right under the heel? Are you tired of suffering through those first painful steps to start your day? We know exactly what you are talking about and we are here to help you!

If you are experiencing these or similar symptoms you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thick band that runs from the base of the heel to the forefoot, and functions to maintain the arches of your feet.

When this structure becomes overstretched it can tear and becomes inflamed and painful – not that we have to tell you that.

A good starting point to relieving some of your heel pain is regular icing and massage of the plantar fascia. This management strategy is great because you can do these separately or together, it is just that easy!

“Did you know that over 50% of people will experience heel pain at least once in their lives? That is 1 in every 2 people.

That is MASSIVE!”

If heel pain is not addressed and assessed by someone with a proven track record and that sees and treats heel pain day in and day out, then here are some worst-case scenarios.

Tendons that insert into the heel could rupture, a heel spur could develop, walking can become very difficult, treatment takes longer and gets more expensive, and in severe cases the effects cannot be reversed, and surgery may be required.

When you see an expert, someone who lives and breathes treating heel pain every day, someone who is fanatical and high fives their team every single time they get a win for their clients – (like all of us expert staff here at the Albury Wodonga Heel Pain Clinic and Border Podiatry Centre) – you’ll finally be in the right hands so that you can get rapid, lasting relief of pain and get back to loving your life of activity and being more you.

Now, let me introduce the secret stretch which you need to be able to master to relieve you of your heel pain. I call it the “dynamic head to toe calf stretch”. I know that sounds weird but if you bear with me everything will be revealed.

The “good old calf” stretch is DEAD!

Gone are the days are the “good old calf stretch”. You know the one where you lean against the wall with your back leg straight and your front leg bent then lean into the wall and feel the stretch in the back of the calf. That stretch is DEAD.

This stretch is solely focusing on the calf muscle and that is it. Every time you stretch it, all you are really doing is making those knots tighter and tighter and tighter and the overall muscle tighter and tighter and tighter (think pulling a rope from either end with knots tied into it – what happens to the knots when you pull the rope? You guessed it, the knots get tighter!)

The “good old calf” stretch is DEAD!
