Client - “I can’t control my emotions yet, but I will”

🎶 MASSIVE WIN this week! 🎶

We LOVE serving families and celebrating real progress with our clients 🙌

This is another curriculum evidence-based intervention we use in sessions:
The Zones of Regulation (see pictured our one this week)

The Zones explained:
🔵 Blue - tired, sad, sick, low energy
🟢 Green - calm, regulated, ready to learn
🟡 Yellow - irritated, frustrated, worried
🔴 Red - mad/angry, hitting, out of control

How it works in therapy:
1️⃣ Identify the zone - noticing body and feelings

“I feel like pushing someone, I’m in the red zone 😡”

2️⃣ Pick a strategy - choosing tools to move back to Green
This under-9 client chose: stretching, meditating, humming/singing, sleep
We can also use movement breaks ⏲️ or ask for help 👋

3️⃣ Blue zone supports - music, a hug, drawing etc
4️⃣ Keep using strategies to calm the body and mind
5️⃣ Re-engage - once back in Green, learning can happen 📈

✨ The win:
This client is now better understanding his thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and using strategies independently.
Huge growth!

What’s this? 🔥

This is a Dialectical Behaviour Hand (DBT) Intervention 🖐️🎶
a musical twist on the Circle of Control. It’s evidence-based and used in therapy to help clients understand what they can and can’t control.

How we do it:
1️⃣ Trace the client’s hand (personalised)
2️⃣ Inside the hand: ask client what is in our control?
3️⃣ Outside the hand: ask client what is out of our control?
4️⃣ Add music, have FUN with it! 🎶
“I can control my ___” / “I can’t control my ___”

Or they making a Calm Vs. Chaos rap ? Have FUN with it 👌🏻

💡 This activity supports insight into thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. When we focus on what we can control, we can learn to better understand our emotions and self.

One client realised that while anger shows up, actions are a choice! He said that he can’t control pushing people when ANGRY 😤 We had a big ‘aha!’ moment when we asked the question ‘when you feel that way, what can you do?’ We found calming strategies like stretching, humming, singing, and dancing. Amazing insight and win for the client! 🙌

This is Mr. C, and he is a COMPOSER 🎶

He uses his eye-tracking abilities to express himself and create music, and it’s incredible to witness..

Lately, Mr. C has been really enjoying the drum kit and violin sounds. Each session, he’s given choice and control to select the instruments he wants to explore. When he sustains longer violin tones, we scaffold and ground these on acoustic guitar and he comes up with some truly beautiful melodies 🎶

It’s a privilege to work alongside Mr. C and to see how music can bridge the gap between expression, communication, and creativity when words aren’t enough..

If you’re interested in music therapy sessions with us, send us a DM and we’ll chat about how we can help 🎶🔥

A moment that really stuck with me as a Registered Music Therapist 🎶

When we listen to songs, we sit in the driver’s seat - everything we hear is filtered through our own lens. Meaning it can come from anywhere.. even just three words like “take it easy.” We can take these messages for ourselves, let the music wash over us and reflect through it in a non-invasive, passive way.

Try these simple steps:
- play a song you like
- think about what mood / theme comes to you
- make some playlists with these and name the feeling e.g. reflective, melancholy, whispery.. get CREATIVE
- next time you’re feeling like that, hit play ▶️ and notice how it makes you feel

If this resonates with you, let me know. I’d love to share more about how powerful music therapy can be, and how incredible it is working with people to support their health and wellbeing goals 🎶🙌

What is this? 🤔

This is AAC tech called Tobii Eye Tracker 5 paired with EyeHarp and it’s been a total game changer for one of our clients who sadly sustained an acquired brain injury from an accident.

For the past 18 months, we’ve been supporting him to create music through eye gaze. When he looks at different colours on the screen, it plays a musical note. Simple idea. Huge impact.
He’s now starting to make up melodies within shared music making which is amazing to witness and scaffold !

Why it matters:
🎯 Choice-making & control - he can clearly show what he wants and doesn’t want
🗣️ Social connection - more confident engagement with staff and parents
🙌 Self-expression - music becomes his voice when words are hard to access

This isn’t just “cool tech.”
It’s communication, autonomy, and personal identity through music. It’s accessible and tailored to him.

More on this awesome AAC setup and EyeHarp coming soon🎶

Let’s break down what tailored support actually means !!

Your music therapy session 🎶

(face-to-face) what you see:
This is your direct time with us. A safe space to connect, explore your interests, and work towards your or your child’s goals through music.

(non-face-to-face) what your don’t see:
We want what happens in session to carry over into real life, so the work continues even when the instruments are packed away.

This involves:
• Reviewing goals and planning upcoming sessions
• Writing clinical notes and evaluating progress
• Researching new ideas and evidence-based approaches, we don’t just “do music,” we use tested strategies that get results
• Creating resources and self-support tools
• Checking in with you, parents, carers, and your wider support team

Tailored support = the session and everything around it that helps you grow outside the room! 🎶🔥

The session starts when you book it.

Parents, we see you 👉 your Spotify Wrapped is 5%
“my music” and 95% K-Pop Demon Hunters 😅

But hey, why don’t we use your kiddo’s interests do work on their goals and emotions !!

This track is “Golden” (HUNTR/X) is all about
SELF-ACCEPTANCE and BRAVERY 🤗

Core themes: it’s a fun catchy anthem about finding your true self, facing the scary parts, and shining anyway! It’s tied to Rumi’s struggle to accept her whole identity and feel strong with her team.
