HEAL Psychology

HEAL Psychology HEAL Psychology helps people learn, grow and heal with horses using Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). Visit us at www.healpsychology.com

HEAL Psychology uses horses for treatment of mental health issues, emotional growth, and learning through the EAGALA model of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in the greater Sydney and Illawarra areas. Sessions involve a collaborative effort between a psychologist and an equine specialist working with clients and horses to address treatment and/or learning goals. The focus of the organisation is to help people focus on goals and future oriented issues, and to develop life skills and confidence through working with the horses.

A sadder start to the New Year with us saying goodbye to our beloved little pony this morning. As is the case with all of our therapy horses, he went by many names, but we knew him as Felix 🖤

Felix had a good start to his life with a friend of the family, but as it happens with many horses when he was sold to what should have been a forever home he was then sold on, and found himself in the ownership of people who weren’t able to give him the best care as he moved into his senior years. By a touch of fate he was found by our friend, and we agreed to look after him for the time he had left.

Felix was the sweetest boy and became a favourite of many clients. He was quite confronting to look at but this allowed for clients to look past the physical, and to find a level of understanding and connection - a beauty of the soul. The last picture and written below is a poem written by a client about her experience with meeting Felix who she called Blackie.

Felix chose to leave this morning naturally and peacefully with some assistance from Rick. He is laid to rest next to our beautiful Zippy girl 🤍 who we are sure met him at the rainbow bridge to show him to endless green pastures he is now enjoying.

Today we cry with Mother Nature and feel all of the emotions, but we also thank Felix for his service and know that he has made space for another horse in need when that day comes.

Blackie 🖤
Why am I sad,
I do not know.
A horse stood there,
How was I to know,
That he would touch my heart and touch my soul.
Not really a beautiful horse,
He was battered and bruised,
And probably broken down.
But he stood there radiating a beauty not everyone could see.
I thank you Blackie for allowing me to see,
Beneath the scars,
Beneath those horrible bruises,
The beauty of the soul.

🌞Winter Solstice🌝

Tonight we welcome the shortest day of the year. You might have been feeling the heaviness in days prior, but let this night be a reminder that even in the darkest of times there is hope - if we had no winter the spring would not feel as warm.

For my witchy friends, don’t forget your rituals tonight, for rituals are what give life meaning. Keep your candles lit to ward off unwanted energies, infuse your home with fruits and smells of the sun - orange, cinnamon, and send your fears and doubts into a bowl of salt water - or if you are brave enough jump into the ocean or a nice warm bath and submerge in the salt.

All my blessings and love is sent your way ✨

When those feelings of being unlovable and unworthy creep in, move closer towards yourself. Choose to love yourself even more. Build a bond so strong that nothing anyone else says or does can pull you away from it.

You are loved. ❤️

Learn, Grow, and Heal with Horses

HEAL Psychology is a place where humans and horses work together to improve quality of life and mental health. Surrounded by natural rainforest and coastal views of Wombarra and the lush green hills of Kiama, our team of professionals and gentle rescue horses help people address treatment and learning goals so they may learn, grow, and heal their lives.

We provide 50-90 minute psychology sessions partly rebated through medicare for children, youth, adults, service men and women, and school groups. Sessions involve ground based activities with the horses (no riding as there is a focus on human skills rather than horse skills) using a form of therapy called Equine Assisted Therapy combined with traditional psychology treatments.

Our rescue horses are fully present and highly sensitive, relying on their senses for survival. They react to non verbal communication and act without agenda or judgement. They mirror human body language and give immediate feedback on how clients are communicating, providing metaphors for our clients lives. Working with the horses results in a decrease in depression, stress, anxiety, and an increase in wellbeing, confidence, self esteem, and improved relationships.
