We recently had this video sent through to our team showcasing the excellent work our injury prevention team did with our clients UGL Unipart Rail Services Pty Ltd that resulted in winning the SafeWork awards.

https://lnkd.in/gmGEVg_6

Some great insights here from Haydn Tawse, Chris Poole and the team at UGL around the process of risk reduction and continuous improvement. Shane Rose additionally noted that this is a fantastic example outlining how our team utilise a participatory approach to reducing musculoskeletal disorder risk, spending time on the worksite with our clients employees to get an accurate understanding of manual task risk.

👀 Did you know our team have a track record of reducing musculoskeletal injury risk in dating back to 2010? We strive to go above and beyond to help our clients implement high level controls and reduce their risk of hazardous manual tasks. Many of our injury prevention consultants have worked across heavy maintenance, rail operations, wagon and locomotive maintenance and even at some of the long running wheel lines across the country.

👉 In this case we helped develop a purpose-built scissor lift to eliminate the hazardous, manual task of workers lifting a 38kg plate over their heads in an awkward position during rail track installation, which risked a potential crush injury should the plate fall. The injury prevention team worked with our onsite physio team to ensure a process of continuous improvement was implemented, consultation with the workers and overall risk reduction. Our onsite physio continues to work with these teams to ensure any niggles experienced are proactively addressed and workers engage in daily injury prevention activities to keep their bodies injury free.

💥 An amazing example of onsite injury prevention in action.

The team were privileged to be invited to the Queensland Rail SEQ Assets Safety Celebration Showcase this month. This was for the 5S and Prescribe improvements in the Mayne Yard maintenance area.

It was an amazing day sharing safety improvements, ideas and initiatives with the SEQ team.

The event focussed on celebrating all SEQ successes over the past year, as well as identifying learnings to help improve safety culture.

Thanks to the great work completed by the QR team with the assistance of Prescribe we were nominated to share our learnings and insights at the event.

Our team can not thank the leaders at Mayne Yard enough for their support and assistance with the hazardous manual task program. Special thanks to Ben Wagener who did an amazing job of summing up the goal and process of the program aligned with his 5s initiatives during his presentation to the group at the event. Highlighting both the dedication to safety, leadership and continuous improvement in the area.

Shane was a guest panellist at the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition last month.

The panel discussion was on Physical and Mental Health: Return on Investment. Shane was joined by a fantastic panel; Carole from the University of Newcastle, Holstein from emesent and Taylor from Endress + Hauser.

Our team are pleased to have achieved some amazing results with our mining clients over the last couple of years and Shane was invited for his input on achieving a ROI in musculoskeletal injury prevention.

It is well documented that mining has high rates of MSD's and Shane was happy to share how our process is helping these clients across isolated and challenging work environments. Shane specifically detailed how the program design, engagement, management commitment and medium of rollout was crucial to the success of injury prevention programs in mining environments.

This was a little while back now, however this article was recently sent us again from a client that found us on the internet, outlining our national Australasian Railway Association Industry Award. A pretty massive achievement for a small business. 🔥

✅ This was such a significant award for our team and recognition for all the hard work they put in each day to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the rail industry.

😁 Even though winning an award is great the team made it clear that the biggest win comes from the following statement 👉 "Since implementing the tool, zero injuries have been recorded for handling knuckles across eight east coast maintenance depots. All workers, regardless of strength can now safely participate in performing the task".

Our track record, hard work and all the results achieved over the past years working to proactively prevent musculoskeletal disorders all our clients within the rail industry is something we are very excited to be able to share.

👋 If you would like to hear about how our team help rail companies send us a direct message, we will be happy to step you through our 3 step process to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. 👋

"The knuckle lifter's smart design enables the changing of knuckles in a workshop and in the field. It has far reaching benefits for all rail industry providers who are faced with the risk of replacing either locomotive or wagons knuckles." Mr Tawse said.

Even though winning an award is great the team made it clear that the biggest win comes from the following statement "Since implementing the tool, zero injuries have been recorded for handling knuckles across Aurizon's eight east coast maintenance depots. All workers, regardless of strength can now safely participate in performing the task".

This recognises our track record, hard work and all the results achieved over the past years working to proactively prevent musculoskeletal disorders not only for Aurizon but for all our clients within the rail industry.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I was at a new workplace, talking to an injured employee and they told me “manual handling, bend the knees and keep the back straight.”

I would like to think by now, that it is common knowledge that manual tasks, when poorly designed or done incorrectly can become hazardous and cause injury.

Why if musculoskeletal disorders are still the most common work related condition in Australia do so many workers still pump out the generic ‘bend the knees’ tag line?

We surely have a workplace training and injury prevention issue across many industries if generic manual handling training is still your only solution to musculoskeletal disorders.

Every year in August, a major spotlight is placed on rail safety in the community via the public awareness campaign Rail Safety Week.

The aim is to highlight the importance of being safe and acting responsibly on, and around the rail network. Fatalities, incidents and near hits on the network can cause severe and lasting trauma to the rail employees involved, and the majority of these incidents can be avoided!

The team at Prescribe Australia work to prevent and assist musculoskeletal injuries with a number of rail companies, this can at times put us in thick of the rail corridor. We can not stress enough the importance of staying safe around the rail network and this is why we make the pledge to be .

Some great points from the toolkit:
🌟The easiest and best way to be around the network is to follow the basic safety rules and respect rail signage.
🌟Always look both ways before crossing tracks and cross at designated areas.
🌟Remember trains can’t stop quickly or swerve; make sure you give them right of way.
🌟Pay attention and avoid being distracted by mobile devices.

Working From Home?🏡

We have experienced increased questions and referrals recently from companies that need our assistance to set up their employees working from home or alternative workplace. This is no surprise with the rapid changes we are experiencing in the modern workplace.

👉It is important to remember that even though your employees may be working from home this is still a workplace and we have a responsibility to ensure our workers health and safety while they are at work.

We understand that both your business and your employees have diverse needs and while some are benefiting from flexibility in work arrangements, with less time commuting for example. Some are struggling to find their stride, juggling work, family and an intertwined work life balance.

⭐️Many of our clients are currently assisting their employees by showing them the benefits of establishing and maintaining an appropriate work area in any alternative workplace location, including the home.

To do this many are completing our ‘Setting up an Alternative Workplace Environment Checklist’ if you think your team could benefit from this please get in contact at info@prescribeaustralia.com.au

Most of us think of as a result of an injury or disease. We expect it will go away once we have medical treatment or the injury heals. For many people, this is the case. However for others, the pain doesn’t go away. In some cases, you can have pain without an injury or obvious body damage. #

This ongoing type of pain is called chronic pain. Approx 1 in 3 Australians live with chronic pain.

❓How do I know if my pain system is being over protective?
If you have had pain for more than a few months, then your pain system will be more efficient at producing pain. This is what happens over time – your system becomes more sensitive. There are many ways to retrain your pain system, but they all begin with understanding your pain.

⭐️When our pain system becomes over protective, it stops us doing the movements, activities and other things & that are actually necessary for recovery.⭐️

❓How do I know if I am safe to move?
Movement is the most critical pathway to recovery and it is almost always safe to move.

Get a health professional to check you over and give you the ‘OK’ to move. A health professional will be able to tell you if you are the very rare case for whom it is not safe to move.

⭐️Injuries heal, and your body’s tissues adapt amazingly well to the demands of life. ⭐️
