💉 Flu Vaccines Have Arrived!

Our first batch of flu vaccines has now arrived at Wonthaggi Medical Group.

You can now call the clinic to book into a designated flu clinic appointment with one of our doctors.

At this stage, we have received a limited supply, however we expect availability to increase over the coming weeks.

We are also planning to roll out flu clinics at our Newhaven and Inverloch branches soon — we’ll keep you updated!

📞 New Service for Our Patients – Bulk Billed Rapid Telephone Appointments

We’re excited to introduce a new service to help reduce wait times and make accessing care more convenient and affordable for our existing patients.

You can now book bulk billed rapid telephone appointments for:

✔️ Repeat scripts for regular medications (excluding pain medications and benzodiazepines)
✔️ Repeat referrals
✔️ Simple medical certificates (excluding WorkCover, Centrelink or TAC certificates)

Our plan is to make these appointments available every day, making it easier to manage your ongoing healthcare needs without needing to attend the clinic in person.

Please note: These are short appointments designed specifically for the services listed above. No additional issues will be addressed during these consultations.

This service is designed to save you time, reduce costs, and improve access to care.

Please note: in order to make one of these appointments, patients must have been seen face to face in the clinic in the last 12 months.

Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday Notice 🐎

Please note that Wonthaggi Medical Group, including Icarus Skin Cancer Clinic will be closed on Tuesday, November 4th for the Melbourne Cup Day public holiday.

We will be open as usual on Monday, November 3rd (except for Icarus being closed) and will reopen on Wednesday, November 5th.

Welcoming back a familiar face!

Meet Dr Daniel Straw — a GP with a background in Emergency Medicine. He has worked in hospitals across Victoria for five years before moving into general practice.

He has completed the GP Fellowship Exams and the Emergency Medicine Certificate, and enjoys seeing patients of all ages and stages of life.

Dr Straw is planning to stay in the Bass Coast long term and feels lucky to be part of this great community.

Outside of work, he loves getting out for a surf and spending time with his two dogs.

Dr. Hackett has a special interest in managing Hepatitis C, providing Q-Fever and Yellow Fever vaccinations, and performing minor procedures — including ultrasound-guided treatments. His dedication, experience, and approachable manner make him a trusted choice for families across the area.

He also acts as a mentor for registrars and students.

When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll likely find Dr. Hackett enjoying hockey, tennis, or pickleball — staying just as active off the job as he is at work!

We’re excited to welcome Melanie Rose, an experienced Nurse Practitioner, to the Wonthaggi Medical Group team!

Melanie brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion to her role, with extensive experience in primary healthcare, urgent care, women’s health, and chronic disease management. She provides care to patients of all ages—from infants to the elderly—with a special focus on supporting women through perimenopause and menopause, weight management, and lifestyle medicine.

📣 Dr of the week 📣

Dr Callum Toole has been a GP at WMG for five years and is a true local, having grown up in the Bass Coast region. He began his career as an emergency doctor, working all over the country during his postgraduate years—including in Melbourne, Alice Springs, Darwin, and numerous other remote and challenging regions.

Since moving into General Practice, he has embraced the transition to family medicine and enjoys caring for his patients with a big smile and plenty of jokes. Callum enjoys all aspects of general practice and performs skin cancer surgery at the clinic every week. He is no stranger to adventure and has worked in Papua New Guinea as a medic on the Kokoda Track.

In his spare time, he plants trees and runs a beef farm where they practise regenerative agriculture and revegetate the land. He also enjoys carpentry, gardening, the outdoors, and music. He’s an accomplished guitarist and songwriter who records and performs locally.

Since becoming a father, Ariel has developed a keen interest in paediatrics, as well as antenatal and postnatal care – gaining real-life insight with every 3am feed.

Outside the clinic, he’s all about movement and the outdoors. He brings that same energy to his consults, helping patients pursue active, sustainable health goals.

He feels fortunate to live and work on the Bass Coast: “The people here are warm and open-hearted – I’m grateful to be part of this community.”
