Can’t make it into the clinic?

Our physiotherapists offer telehealth appointments, so you can still access care wherever you are.

For many people during or after cancer treatment, getting to appointments isn’t always straightforward — whether due to fatigue, reduced immunity, or needing to stay closer to home, telehealth can help bridge that gap and allow you to continue your treatment plan with the right support.

Through telehealth, we can:
🔹 review how things have been progressing between sessions
🔹 guide you through exercises in real time
🔹 problem-solve any changes or new symptoms
🔹 support self-management strategies at home
🔹 provide reassurance around what you’re experiencing

It’s a practical and flexible way to stay connected to your care and maintain consistency, even when you’re not physically in the clinic.

Oral mucositis is one of the most common and challenging side effects of treatment in head and neck cancer. It presents as painful inflammation and ulceration of the oral mucosa, affecting the vast majority of patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.

It is associated with:
🔹 pain
🔹 difficulty swallowing
🔹 reduced tolerance to treatment
🔹 in more severe cases, weight loss, infection risk, or hospitalisation

Support is often focused on managing symptoms once they develop, rather than preventing or reducing how severe they become.

Research over recent years has shown that low level laser therapy can help reduce the severity and duration of mucositis, ease pain, and support people to maintain oral intake during treatment. It is a non-invasive approach that uses low-intensity red or near-infrared light applied at regular intervals.

This has been associated with improved comfort and quality of life during treatment, and reflects a broader shift towards more proactive, targeted support for treatment-related side effects.

As part of her ongoing professional learning Priscila, spent time with Dr Mark Malouf, a surgeon specialising in vascular and lymphatic conditions, gaining insight into the assessment and management of varicose veins and telangiectasia (commonly known as spider veins).

Sclerotherapy is a widely used, minimally invasive procedure where a sclerosant solution is injected into affected veins, causing the vessel walls to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body.

Priscila was particularly interested in what happens after the procedure.

• Compression therapy is prescribed to support vein closure, reduce swelling, and lower the risk of complications
• Early, gentle movement helps maintain circulation and optimise recovery
• Understanding expected post-treatment responses, such as mild bruising, tenderness, or firmness along the treated vein, helps guide appropriate follow-up and reassurance.

A valuable learning experience to highlight that outcomes are shaped not only by the intervention itself, but by how well patients are supported in the recovery phase.

Understanding low level laser therapy

After cancer treatment, it’s common to experience tightness, swelling or sensitivity in certain areas.

It’s one of the most frequently used tools in our clinic to support healing after cancer treatment, helping to:
🔹 soften and improve scar tissue
🔹 reduce discomfort or sensitivity
🔹 support areas affected by swelling
🔹 improve ease of movement

Compression isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Our physiotherapist, Chris explains the difference between flat knit and circular knit compression garments.

Flat knit and circular knit garments each provide different levels of support and structure and the right choice depends on your individual needs.

Cancer care doesn't end when treatment does.

We often see patients months, even years after their cancer treatment struggling with fatigue, stiffness, lymphoedema, reduced strength, or loss of confidence in their body.

With early intervention and timely referral pathways most of these side effects can be minimised or eliminated altogether.

Care that is connected and grounded in evidence makes a difference to long-term outcomes and quality of life.

Did you know that cancer treatments like hormone therapy and radiation can affect pelvic health?

For many, this can show up as bladder symptoms, pelvic discomfort, or changes that impact daily life and confidence.

Earlier this week, we spent time with the team at TPC to further build our understanding of how cancer treatment can impact pelvic health, and how we can better support patients experiencing these changes.

Ongoing collaboration like this helps us provide more considered care, and connect patients with the right support when it’s needed. 💙

Compression garments are an important part of managing lymphoedema but the cost can add up over time.

Funding support is available across Australia through different schemes depending on your state or territory. In NSW, this is available through the ENABLE scheme.

Being well informed about what’s available can help you make more confident decisions about your care.

We’ve outlined how compression garment funding works, including ENABLE, in our latest blog.
