As the holidays approach, many people will be travelling and for those living with lymphoedema, a little extra planning can make a big difference. ✈️ 🎄

Travel can place extra demands on the lymphatic system but with the right strategies in place, it’s possible to reduce the risk of swelling and discomfort while on the move.

✔ Stay well hydrated and limit diuretics such as coffee and alcohol
✔ Choose loose, non-restrictive clothing
✔ Take regular breaks to move, stretch and change position
✔ Wear your prescribed compression garments, especially when flying
✔ Use lightweight luggage with wheels and avoid heavy lifting
✔ Protect your skin with moisturiser, sunscreen, insect repellent and antiseptic cream to reduce the risk of infection

We’re here to support you as you prepare for travel and manage lymphoedema along the way. 💙

Spring into Summer Care 🌸☀️

Summer is here and as the weather warms up, it’s common for lymphoedema symptoms to increase as heat and humidity can lead to extra swelling and discomfort.

Now’s the perfect time to book a maintenance appointment and get your compression garments checked (they should be updated every 6 months).

Stay ahead of summer - don't let lymphoedema hold you back from enjoying the season. 💙

Movement with Meaning 💙

Here’s a little glimpse into what personalised exercise therapy can look like during cancer treatment.

In this session, Mr H is working through gentle, guided exercises that support balance, coordination and strength - all adapted to how he was feeling on the day while undergoing chemotherapy. And yes… the blues playlist definitely helps keep things moving. 🎶

Each exercise is chosen to feel safe, manageable and purposeful, with options he can also continue at home to build confidence between sessions.

Everyone’s treatment journey is different, and that’s why we tailor every session to the person in front of us; their energy, their goals, and what their body needs right now. 💙

Using Gua Sha for Neck Tightness & Swelling 🌿

Self-management tools like gua sha can be a helpful way to support your recovery between physiotherapy sessions. In this video, we’re demonstrating a tailored example of how the tool can be used to gently ease neck tightness, encourage lymphatic flow, and reduce discomfort or swelling.

When used with the right technique, gua sha can:
✨ Improve tissue mobility
✨ Support lymphatic drainage
✨ Reduce tightness and tension
✨ Enhance comfort day-to-day

For many people, these small techniques can make a meaningful difference between appointments, especially when tightness tends to build up with work, stress, posture or scar-related changes.

If gua sha is something you’d like to explore, we’re always happy to walk you through the safest way to use it and tailor the technique to your recovery needs. 💙

Our newest blog is live! ✨

We’re sharing how Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can support recovery after cancer treatment - from softening scar tissue to easing swelling and improving comfort in areas affected by lymphoedema.

LLLT is quick, gentle and non-invasive, and we often use it alongside physiotherapy and lymphatic treatment to help our patients move and feel better during recovery. 💙

You can read the full blog on our website.

Early posture and gait retraining after breast cancer surgery, including DIEP flap reconstruction, is an important part of recovery. 💙

It’s very common to develop protective postures and changes in the way you move after surgery, especially when you’re sore, tight or feeling cautious. If they’re left unaddressed, these habits can stick around and make recovery feel slower.

With supportive, progressive physiotherapy, we work on restoring balance, confidence and comfortable movement so you can return to the things you love with greater freedom. 🧘‍♂️💃

It was a pleasure having Ashling from OsteoStrong Manly visit our clinic to discuss how we can integrate OsteoStrong’s work into our care to further support patients in their recovery. We explored how their treatments can complement physiotherapy and exercise therapy to help assess and develop strength, bone health, and overall physical resilience.

All ORSI patients are invited to book a complimentary Discovery Session and will also receive $100 off the joining fee when they mention ORSI. 💙

The Lymphatouch is a common tool we use to support recovery following surgery, radiation or lymphatic disruption. It’s a device that uses gentle negative pressure to help stimulate lymphatic flow, reduce swelling and improve tissue mobility. 🌿

This technology allows our physiotherapists to provide precise, targeted treatment to sensitive areas such as the head and neck region, improving comfort and supporting tissue healing throughout recovery.

It’s a safe, effective, and evidence-based tool that can make a real difference in comfort and recovery. 💙

We offer the Lymphatouch treatment as an add-on to physiotherapy sessions. If you’d like to learn more about this device or try it during your next appointment, please email ✉️ info@orsi.au or call 📞 02 8018 8240

Last week Orsi attended the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) conference - an event focusing on the future of cancer care, held this year in partnership with the International Psycho-Oncology Society.

She returned feeling inspired and reassured: the vital role of allied health in cancer recovery is being recognised more than ever.

Key topics of presentations & posters included:
🌸 Menopause after cancer
💪 Exercise to prevent cancer-related lymphoedema
🔍 Investigating symptoms & lifestyle risk factors reported by cancer survivors
💬 Fear of cancer recurrence
🌱 Developing life long self-care strategies for LE prevention
🤝 Novel peer to peer support initiatives for patients with head and neck cancer
🌿 Integrative oncology & wellbeing

This knowledge strengthens the way we deliver care grounded in evidence & empathy. 💙

Compression garment check: why it matters before summer ☀️

As temperatures rise, many people notice increased lymphoedema symptoms. Ensuring your compression garment is still effective is one of the key ways to stay comfortable and supported through the warmer months.

A physiotherapist can assess whether your garment still fits correctly, needs adjustment, or should be replaced. A well-fitted garment means better symptom control, less swelling and more freedom to enjoy the season. 💙

Now is the ideal time to review your garments and ensure you’re set for summer. If you’re due for a review, you can book an appointment online or call (02) 8018 8240.

Professional development is a key part of how we continue to refine and elevate our patient care.

Catriona had the opportunity to shadow Dr Mark Malouf during procedures for varicose fragilities, gaining deeper insight into the factors that can contribute to swelling, heaviness and discomfort in the lower limbs.

Experiences like this and through ongoing collaboration strengthen our clinical understanding to ensure our approach remains aligned, evidence-based and centred around the needs of our patients.
